PREFACE
The main topic of my project is Sosyo Company and pollution created by the company and its control. In many industries I had selected the soft drink company as it is the running product in market. As we see in every

occasion soft drinks are served and without soft drinks any party is incomplete. But the company producing the product creates different types of pollution like air pollution and water pollution due to the chemicals used in the company to make the product. Thus this project is base on study of the pollution created by the company and the measures taken to control the pollution.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Industry Description and Practices The Sosyo Company involves processing & botteling of soft drinks like Lemee, Kashmira, Sosyo. The foundation was laid when a young boy in his teens, abbas abdul rahim hajoori began his career selling aerated soft drinks made by various British bottlers. Young hajoori had the tremendeous vision to prove the competence of Indian brands vis--vis foreign brands. Sosyo is a mixture of grape and apple cider with some ingredients imported from Germany and Italy. It also has a blood building agent Kashmira Soda - Kashmira is like a medicinal drink, a digestive drink and is very popular, especially with people who eat rich, oily and spicy foods. Lemee Misty.... a tangy lemon-'n'-lime flavoured thirst quencher with Vitamin, Lemee Orange with orange flavour....soft and cool. Disasters happened during the processing of soft drinks, such as: Fi s h k i l l e d a s s o f t d r i n k l e a k s f ro m f a c t o r y. T h e s p i l l a t the soft drink factory was a 'category one' pollution incident. Due to the chemicals used by company to m a ke p ro d u c t w e re e m p t y i n t o t h e r i v e r t h u s t h e rivers get polluted. Another disaster is the machinery n o i s e a f f e c t i n g t h e w o r ke r s .

Environmental Pollution

The environmental problems in India are growing rapidly. The increasing economic development and a rapidly growing population that has taken the country

from 300 million people in 1947 to more than one billion people today is putting a strain on the environment, infrastructure, and the countrys natural resources. Industrial pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, rapid industrialization, urbanization, and land degradation are all worsening problems. Overexploitation of the country's resources be it land or water and the industrialization process has resulted environmental degradation of resources. Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing humanity and other life forms on our planet today.

Air Pollution

The World Health Organization estimates that about two million people die prematurely every year as a result of air pollution, while many more suffer from breathing ailments, heart disease, lung infections and even cancer. Fine particles or microscopic dust from coal or wood fires and unfiltered diesel engines are rated as one of the

most lethal forms or air pollution caused by industry, transport, household heating, cooking and ageing coal or oil-fired power stations. With pollution level rising across the country, India on Wednesday, the 18 November 2009 revised the national ambient air quality standards after 15 years.

Water Pollution

Is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater). Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water; and, in almost all cases the effect is damaging either to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.

Water pollution is a major problem in the global context. It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases,[1][2] and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.[2] An estimated 700 million Indians have no access to a proper toilet, and 1,000 Indian children die of diarrheal sickness every day. Noise pollution Noise pollution (or environmental noise) is displeasing human-, animal- or machine-created sound that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. The word noise comes from the Latin word nausea meaning seasickness. The source of most outdoor noise worldwide is transportation systems, including motor vehicle noise, aircraft noise and rail noise. Poor urban planning may give rise to noise pollution, since side-by-side industrial and residential buildings can result in noise pollution in the residential area. Other sources of indoor and outdoor noise pollution are car alarms, emergency service sirens, office equipment, factory machinery, construction work, groundskeeping equipment, barking dogs, appliances, power tools, lighting hum, audio entertainment systems, loudspeakers, and noisy people.

Pollution due to biomedical waste

Pollution due to biomedical waste is likely to spread disease dangerous to life and making atmosphere noxious to health. On February 27, 2009 Modasas in Gujarat deadly hepatitis-B trail has led investigators to a major medical waste recycling racket in Ahmedabads own backyard where a whopping 50 tonne biological waste, including syringes, needles, IV sets and vials, was impounded. This illegally procured waste stored in godowns could expose the city and the whole state to the threat of not just hepatitis-B but other deadly infections spread through intravenal treatments. Usually such waste has to be segregated and destroyed in

an incinerator. But the huge quantity of waste found in the godowns were being probably repackaged and sold.

Environmental Pollution and chronic diseases

In an Indo-US joint workshop, on September 05, 2008 at Chandigarh, Prof S K Jindal said it has been globally recognised that environmental factors, have important links with infectious as well as noninfectious diseases of both acute and chronic nature. The WHO estimates that 24 per cent of global disease burden and 23 per cent of all deaths can be attributed to environmental factors. The burden is more on the developing than the developed countries. He said: In developing countries, an estimated 42 per cent of acute lower respiratory infections are caused by environmental factors. The major burden of these hazards is borne by the lungs. Bronchial asthma and other allergies; chronic obstructive lung disease, respiratory infections including tuberculosis and occupational lung diseases are some of the common problems with a strong environmental risk which, account for a large disease burden all over the world, including in India. There is a need for extensive studies to gauge the effects of environmental factors on the human health.

Mahatma Ghandhi on Environmental pollution

Mahatma Gandhi had said that nature has enough to satisfy everyones need but has not enough to satisfy mans greed. Sadly our ever-expanding greed has put us in such precarious situation. Will we realise it? The policy of industrialisation had helped rich to become richer and poor become poorer. The disparity has widened. It is the democratic system followed in the country which has forced our policymakers to think of growth for all. That is why we are hearing plans for inclusive growth. Industrialisation is not without price. All these have a direct bearing on environmental pollution leading to climatic change. We are all witness to the deleterious effects of climate change. The

The most polluted places in India

Vapi in Gujarat and Sukinda in Orrisa is among the world's top 10 most polluted places, according to the Blacksmith Institute, a New York-based nonprofit group. Vapi : Potentially affected people: 71,000 -Pollutants: Chemicals and heavy metals due to its Industrial estates. Sukinda: Potentially affected people: 2,600,000. -Pollutants: Hexavalentchromium due to its Chromite mines.

INDUSTRY (SOFT DRINK)

Introduction Soft drink market size for FY00 was around 270 m.n cases (6480mn bottles). The market witnessed 5- 6% growth in the early90s. Presently the market growth has growth rate of 7- 8% per annum compared to 22% growth rate in the previous year. The market size for FY01 is expected to be 7000 mn bottles. Soft Drink Production area The market preference is highly regional based. While cola drinks have main markets in metro cities and northern states of UP, Punjab, Haryana etc. Orange flavored drinks are popular in southern states. Sodas too are sold largely in southern states besides sale through bars. Western markets have preference towards mango flavored drinks. Diet coke presently constitutes just 0.7% of the total carbonated beverage market.

11

Growth promotional activities The government has adopted liberalized policies for the soft drink trade to give the industry a boast and promote the Indian brands internationally. Although the import and manufacture of international brands like Pepsi and Coke is enhanced in India the local brands are being stabilized by advertisements, good quality and low cost. The soft drinks market till early 1990s was in hands of domestic players like campa, thumps up, Limca etc but with opening up of economy and coming of MNC players Pepsi and Coke the market has come totally under their control. The distribution network of Coca cola had6.5 lakh outlets across the country in FY00, which the company is planning to increase to 8 lakhs by FY01. On the other hand Pepsi Co's distribution network had 6 lakh outlets across the country during FY00 which it is planning to increase to 7.5 Lakh by FY01. Types Soft drinks are available in glass bottles, aluminum cans and PET bottles for home consumption. Fountains also dispense them in disposable containers Non-alcoholic soft drink beverage market can be divided into fruit drinks and soft drinks. Soft drinks can be further divided into carbonated and non-carbonated drinks. Cola, lemon and oranges are carbonated drinks while mango drinks come under non carbonated category. The market can also be segmented on the basis of types of products into cola products and non-cola products.

12

Cola products account for nearly 61-62% of the total soft drinks market. The brands that fall in this category are Pepsi, Coca- Cola, Thumps Up, diet coke, Diet Pepsi etc. Non-cola segment which constitutes 36% can be divided into 4 categories based on the types of flavors available, namely: Orange, Cloudy Lime, Clear Lime and Mango.

SOSYO
The Foundation:The foundation was latd when a young boy in his teens, abbas abdul rahim hajoori began his career selling aerated soft drinks made by various british bottlers. Young hajoori had the tremendeous vision to prove the competence of Indian brands vis--vis foreign brands. It was this vision that laid the foundation of a new era in the Indian soft drink industry in the form of hajoori & sons which was to later come out weth one of the phenomenal brands in India sossyo. 1923 saw the foundation of hajoori & sons in surat, gijarat, but fate did

13

not deem to let the founder enjoy the success. The reins were taken over by Mr. mohsin abdul rahim hajoori, after the ultimately demise of his elder brother. He did not have to look back since then.

Mr.Abbas Abdul Rahim Hajoori

Mr. Mohsin Abdul Rahim Hajoori With the renewed vigour of the next generation, the business reached new heights in the 70`s and 80`s. today sosyo had become a formidable brand and is all set to grow further. Sosyo is an Indian aerated drink, produced and marketed mainly in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, India. Sosyo is the product of the Swadeshi movement of Indian independence struggle. Mohsin Hajoori introduced Sosyo in 1927 in Surat, as an Indian option to the UK drink Vitmo. Vitmo was marketed in India since 1923 by Mohsin Hajoorin. Originally Sosyo was called Whisky No, to attract alcoholics in the dry state of Gujarat, India. It was sealed with a marble in a factory in Salabatpura by Hajoori and Sons. The present name was derived from the Latin word 'Socious', since it became a social drink. The name 'Whisky No' was derived from the fact that Sosyo tastes like alcohol.

14

Sosyo is a mixture of grape and apple cider with some ingredients imported from Germany and Italy. It also has a blood building agent. There are die-hard Sosyo fans 50 million bottles of Sosyo are consumed every year, mainly in Surat and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra where bottling plants are located. It is exported as far as UAE, South Africa, New Zealand, UK and USA. The exported bottles are marked as An Indian Drink with a tri-coloured backdrop. Yellow river: The spill at the soft drink factory was a 'category one' pollution incident Related stories Around 8,000 litres of concentrate used to make the drink leaked into a watercourse, turning the river bright yellow. Dozens of fish were found floating on the surface, poisoned by the lurid mixture. The spill of 'sub-standard' juice was a category one pollution incident, the most serious kind, according to the Environment Agency. It was caused by a split in an underground fiberglass tank at the Soft Drink factory. Approximately six tons of juice and concentrate, due for disposal, seeped into a tributary of the River. Employees began a major mopping-up operation to stop the soft drink reaching the river and causing more environmental havoc. Workers created a sandbag wall and dug trenches to stop it seeping any further. As they toiled, three tankers were called in to pump as much of the spillage out of the watercourse as possible. The damaged tank was emptied and pits around it were excavated to prevent soft drink that had already spilled travelling further. The emergency action successfully concentrate reaching the river. stopped the

More than 10million litres of soft drinks are produced every week at the plant.

Solutions on water pollution

19

Three options are available in controlling industrial wastewater: 1 Control can take place at the point of generation in the plant. 2 To control water pollution water softners, Water Filtration System, Water Treatment Plants etc can be used.

Noise pollution in company

Noise pollution (or environmental noise) is displeasing human-, animal- or machine-created sound that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. Noise pollution is cause by the factory due to its working machines. The areas around the factory get disturbed due to the noise created by factory and it is also harmful to their health as more noise can affect on the ears and they can become deaf. As many machines are used in factory that create noise pollution.

Control noise pollution

1. The first approach has been to reduce noise at source. Design and fabrication of silencing devices and their use in industrial machines would be an effective measure. Protection to workers can be provided through wearing devices such as earplugs and earmuffs. 2. Making a change in design and operation of machines, vibration control, sound proof cabins and sound-absorbing materials can reduce it.

20

3. It can get reduced by prescribing noise limits for industrial establishments, near schools and hospitals and resigning of building to make them noise proof.

SUGGESTION
Wastewater can be treated completely at the plant and either reused or discharged directly into receiving waters Wastewater can be pretreated for discharge to municipal treatment sources. Locate in the building as far as possible from noise source. The noise level drops about 6dB each time the distance is doubled. Trees and shrubs may be planted in front of building to provide some absorption for the sound.

21

CONCLUSION
The soft drink companies are only profit oriented, as they harm the environment by creating pollution and harm the customers by selling unhealthy and chemically processed drinks. The pollutions are created water pollution, noise pollution and litter. The environments water is unpurified due to the waste released by soft drink processing companies. The same is the case with litter pollution, all their waste is thrown into land in form of litter, which takes years and years to decay. These soft drinks make customers addicted towards the brand because of the chemicals put into it. For e.g. Sosyo Company launched its first drink saying that it tasted like whisky and had addictives into it which attracted customers. All customers knew this but still purchased the soft drinks. So instead of harming both sides, the companies should think and launch healthy drinks which are good for the customers and introduce new methods of production which do not harm the environment.
