Club Secretarys Report

As the season approaches, I thought I would communicate with you some of the latest information/news. Through some hard negotiating with the Council we have managed to maintain our club grant for 2012/13. However, this is probably only delaying the inevitable and the Club Management Team ( CMT ) continue to look at ways of reducing our costs and increasing our income. The grant goes into our Clubhouse/Stadium Account to pay for the upkeep of the facilities - we are extremely reluctant to use monies from our club account ( ie income from meetings, membership, training etc ) for the stadium - we much prefer to spend it on our own club activities. The fixtures are now finalised for the 2012 summer season (with one or two exceptions). All details are on the club website. As usual we have an extensive programme of Grand Prix/Medal Meetings. This year the Medal Meetings start at 12 pm and we always look to our coaches/officials/parents of the younger athletes to help out please do so if you can. The Grand Prix programme has been extended to a total of seventeen meetings - again help is always needed and they are great meetings to participate in. Most meetings will now specialise between distance/throws and sprints/hurdles/jumps so they don`t last longer than a couple of hours. The AGM will be held on Thursday 29th March after training. The current CMT consists of nine members, but we need more people to get involved who are based at the track and involved with the younger athletes, in particular. There is always a danger that the CMT can become detached from the club members and that will ultimately affect the athletes so it is in your interest to have an active CMT. If you are unsure about what`s involved, I`m more than happy to chat. Many parents think that we have paid coaches/officials etc and therefore assume their help is not needed but, if anything, we need their help more than the smaller clubs as we have more teams & meetings. One of the recent decisions made by the CMT was as a consequence of my earlier referral to finances. For 2012, the club will revert back to the standard procedure of many years of charging athletes a match fee when coach hire/accommodation is involved (albeit a small amount). Consequently, all athletes will pay 15 for an overnight stop and 2 for a day match when travelling by coach. Currently, we have one coach planned for the NYAL match at Cleckheaton. Team Managers will be responsible for collecting monies. Athletics is one of the cheapest sports and we will always try to keep it that way but at the same time the club needs to ensure its athletes continue to contribute. The club has recently joined the M60 network which now consists of about nine clubs around the M60. It is fairly low-key at the moment and there are some issues regarding chairmanship but I expect the network to become more important to us over the next year or so. I will try and make these bulletins more often to keep you abreast of anything relevant to our club. (Mike Harris)

Middle Distance Report

The beginning of 2012 brought the start of the Cross Country Championship season. 14 of our group had maintained their fitness over the Christmas break by joining our annual training camp at a cottage in North Wales. The intention is that by training at least twice a day, the athletes approach the 'sharp end' of the season with renewed vigour and a higher level of fitness. At the Greater Manchester Clubs Championships at Woodbank Park the Under 17 & Under 15 Boys teams both won their Championships. The Under 15 team were outstanding by packing 4 runners in the top 5 places. Despite a bad fall which required hospital treatment, Jack Crabtree won the race by one second from Zak Miller. As a result of these championships, 9 of our athletes have been selected to represent Greater Manchester in the UK Inter Counties Championships in Birmingham in March. They are James Bundred, Adam Sixsmith and Richard Powell in the U17s, Jack Crabtree, Zak Miller, Danny Lawton & Ryan Babcock in the U15s, Colin Daly and Danny Pullen in the Under 13s. In addition, Jake Lonsdale has been selected for Lancashire U13s in the same Championships. The following week at Woodbank Park, the 4th fixture of the Manchester Area League was held. Ben Everson made up for a bad run in the Lancashire Championships by winning the U17 race with Richard Powell 3rd. Danny Lawton and Danny Pullen gained 2nd places in their age groups, and Raffi Quirke and Xavier O'Hare finished in the top half of the field in the U11s. Our results at the Northern Championships at Pontefract Racecourse were rather disappointing. All 8 Trafford athletes finished in the top half of their respective fields, but we failed to finish a team in any age group. Top individual performances were Jake Lonsdale, 3rd out of 170 runners in the U13 race, and Jack Crabtree 5th in the U15s. The following week Trafford AC hosted the Greater Manchester Schools Cross Country Championships on a frozen and snowy Longford Park course. Colin Daly and Danny Pullen both had outstanding runs to finish 1st and 2nd in the Year 7 race. In the Year 8/9 race, Ryan Babcock won his first County Championship with Josh Laws 3rd. In a very competitive Year10/11 race, Danny Lawton was 4th and Jack Crabtree 5th. These 4, along with Callum Drasdo, will represent Greater Manchester in the English Schools Championships in Somerset next month. Hopefully, the final 3 races of the season, The National, Inter Counties and English Schools Championships, will round off another very successful winter season for the Trafford AC distance athletes. The girls have also been active with participation in various competitions including the Northern Championships, Manchester League and Greater Manchester Schools competitions. Competitors include Beth Donnally, Rochelle John, Gabbrielle Kelly, Nicola Scott, Megan McHugh, Lili Boyle, Carmel Townend, Shona Boyle, Tessa McHugh and Danielle McMinn. (Neil Canham)

Glory at the Northern Indoor Championship

Well done to Jerell Marchan and Tameika Cuff both got silver medals in the u17 60m Hurdles. This was a great day at the Northern Championships in Sheffield for our young athletes. We left at 7:30 with Jerell still in sleep mode and arrived in Sheffield just before 9:00. Once registered they both started to warm up in the company of Jessica Ennis which gave us all a boost. Tameika's heat was first and she headed to the call room 20 minutes before the start which is normal for this standard of competition. With 21 girls entered there were three heats, with the top two from each race qualifying for the final, plus the two fastest runners up. So the pressure was on. Tameika was drawn in a heat with a Greater

Trafford Athletic Club Junior Section Newsletter February 2012 Manchester rival from Sale; she got a good start and qualified for the final by finishing in second place with a time of 9.40. Jerell was up next and he was off to the call room. He was drawn in a heat with Ashely Kirsopp, a rival and friend from Warrington. Jerell did enough to qualify and he was able to have a rest before the final. However, Tameika's next race was in the 300m! In which she managed a creditable 45.25 and a 4th spot, just missing out on qualification for the semi final. It was then back to the call up room for the final of the hurdles. Tameika lined up for final and was one of the only girls to start without blocks. The gun went, and by the time she was at the first hurdle she was in 5th place; but that didn't deter her and she worked really hard, it was very close, but she managed to work her way into second and a silver medal with a time of 9.49. Next, it was a Jerell in the 60m hurdles final. By the third hurdle Jerell was in third and Ashley started pulling away to win. Jerell moved up a gear and cruised to 2nd place and a silver medal. Jessica Ennis won her shot put competition, so well done Jess, Tameika and Jerell as it is not every day that you can say that you have competed at a championship with a former world champion. With those two great performances in the bag they have qualified for the English indoor championships at the end of February. (Derek Fraser) Two of our new recruits in the U15 girls middle distance section decided to test their fitness over 800m in these Championships. Rochelle John, who has only been running for a few months, ran a very gutsy pb of 2.33.82 in her heat, missing qualifying for the final by 0.1 second! Beth Donnelly, a previous Northern Cross Country Champion who has recently had injury problems, comfortably won her heat in 2.30.85 before improving to 2.28.12 for a silver medal in the final. (Neil Canham)

Longford Park Centenary Celebrations

The Friends of Longford Park (FOLP) friendsoflongfordpark.org.uk are celebrating the centenary of the opening of the park with a series of events throughout the year. The main celebrations will be held in the Park on the weekend of the 12th & 13th May 2012. Trafford AC is an important resident of the Park. We have been approached by the Organisers of the celebrations to see if we would like to get involved. Currently the FOLP would like us to organise some Athletics taster events that can be offered to visitors on the day. Most of the Junior Coaches will be in Warrington that weekend so if any Parents are interested in helping out with the celebrations even if in non-athletics related activity, please get in touch with the Organisers. They would welcome any assistance offered. The Junior Coaches will be busy organising the Olympic Celebrations that the Club will be involved with. More details of these events to follow in the next Newsletter. FOLP have really made a difference to the environment in the Park. We all use it for training and local Cross Country competitions, so it would be great to see a Trafford AC representation. Details of planned events and celebrations can be found on the above website. For those Athletes and Parents not a Warrington it looks like a fun weekend is planned. More details on the Events and for any related enquiries please contact info@folp.org.uk or phone Margaret on 865 6064

Meet the athlete, meet your teacher...

We continue with our Meet your teacher series by featuring Benjamin Sumner Benjamin Sumner Where do you work? I am a Science and PE supply teacher, teaching in schools across Greater Manchester. I gave up a permanent post in Rochdale 4 years ago and decided to focus on achieving my potential as an athlete. I havent been able to get much funding from the sport, so I still have to work an average of 4 days a week, usually day-to-day, in a range of different schools. I am currently in a one-term placement at Flixton Girls School teaching Science. Last year, I had a two-term placement teaching Maths (nearly Science!) in Hathershaw School in Oldham. What do you like most about teaching? I like the fact that every single day is different. I also value the fact that we are making a difference to a lot of young lives, and if we are positive role models, we can pass on some of the things weve learned, both generally and within the subjects we teach. I enjoy the behaviour management challenge of difficult classes, but it is nice to get a class that has been well trained for learning every now and then! How long have you been running for? Ive been running since I was 11 but my St. Albans AC coach Brian Hopkins suggested I try hurdling when I was 15. Before that, I had represented Hertfordshire at the long jump, high jump, 100m, pole vault and 400m! When did you first think that you could potentially reach the highest level in athletics? When I was U17, I ranked fourth in the UK for 400m hurdles. I had gone on warm weather training for the first time that winter, and I knew that if I worked hard I could someday represent my country. I believed at that time that I could have a full career in the sport. I am 28 now and still dont think Ive got close to my potential. How often do you train and what is your training like? I train 7 times a week, but I do have a rest day and train twice on a Tuesday. I have 2 track sessions (usually one more aerobic and one more anaerobic), 2 weights and circuits sessions, a hills session, a hurdles drills and skills session and a proper hurdles session. It is incredibly hard work, and every few weeks I do need to ease off a bit on some sessions or even miss one out. I am training to be the best I can be though so I know that I need to get the most out of my body. When you cant walk after a session and youre throwing up on the track, you know that you have pushed it as far as you can. An ice bath after hard sessions always makes it easier to walk the next day! What are you training for at the moment? It is every athletes goal to get to an Olympic Games. I have a chance of representing Great Britain in London 2012, so even though it is a relatively slim chance, it has to be my primary goal. If I fail to qualify for the Olympics, I would hope to still represent Team GB in the European Championships in Helsinki just before the Games next year. Failing this, my goal is always to run close to my potential. I have had a lot of coaches that have believed in me, and my family have always been an incredible support, so I want to make them all proud. What do you get from athletics? Well I certainly dont make much money from it! I love training in a squad of like-minded, talented, competitive people. My coach, Steve Ball, is like a dad to me after the last 10 years and hes taught me about self confidence, discipline and work ethic, as well as how to treat people properly. Ive learned a lot from some fantastic coaches, and I think and I think I take some of the methods I have picked up into the classroom when I teach. I am also lucky enough to spend my summers competing all around Europe, often staying in nice hotels in hot countries and meeting world class athletes from around the world. Its a shame we often cant stay longer in beautiful cities like Geneva, but i do appreciate the opportunities which I couldnt afford to finance myself. The strangest thing is often having to share rooms with foreign athletes who cant speak English, just picked at random.
Phone: 07780 616 335
www.traffordac.co.uk Email:tc@traffordac.org.uk

Trafford Athletic Club Junior Section Newsletter February 2012 What are your greatest achievements in the sport to date? I have represented England 4 times since 2005. I represented Great Britain at U23 level in 2005, but unfortunately have suffered with injury or illness at key times since then. I came 4th at the last Olympic trials, just 3 hundredths of a second behind Dai Greene. Since then, hes won the Commonwealth Games, European Championships and is now World Champion. The 400m hurdles is a funny event because if you get a race right you can knock a big chunk of time off and suddenly you are running at a different level. Every athlete is looking for that breakthrough moment. Have you always found it easy to succeed in athletics? When I was younger I did often win races. The life of a competitive athlete is all about entering bigger and better races though so you dont always win unless you are the best in the world! You have to see defeat as a learning process and learn to focus on your own performance. I have got quite good at evaluating myself in every walk of life. I just have to make sure Im not too harsh because I have been told I can give myself a hard time for any mistakes I make on or off the track! My favourite coach quote is were not machines!. I interpret that to mean we can have off days and sometimes, we just need to give ourselves a break. I am very conscious that all young people need that break sometimes, because there are often myriad factors that affect their performance or the decisions that they make. Do you find it easy to have a teaching career and train 6 days a week? No. I try to work only 3 days a week after Christmas; and obviously having the long summer holidays helps, although since doing supply work, I dont get paid in the summer anymore! I do get very tired, and I try to avoid stressful days at school. I have had to turn down some jobs because I know I would end up emotionally as well as physically drained, but I am lucky that I have built up a good network of schools where the days are challenging but more fun than stressful! I am honest with schools that I put everything into teaching but I do have to miss the odd after-school meeting or parents evening. This isnt a problem whilst still on supply, but I also look forward to focusing on my teaching career when the athletics is over. I dont think I would ever want o be a full-time athlete but I would love to have some support that allowed me to work 2 or 3 days a week and still pay the bills. I have an extremely supportive family and a girlfriend that doesnt mind too much if I neglect the chores for days on end. The support network you have around you is what makes the difference between having a chance of reaching your potential without sponsorship and falling short of your dreams. Hopefully I can get the balance right and achieve my goals despite having other pressures on my time. (Benjamin Sumner) If any other teachers would like to tell us about their athletic prowess; please contact us via the email address on the bottom and well be glad to feature you in future editions.

Sportshall League Review

This years Sportshall was a mixed affair, with some great individual performances but the Team results suffered from a lack of consistent numbers, particularly in the Under 11 age Groups. Ethan OGorman (U11) had a great Sportshall season, showing real tenacity and speed in all his runs. His attitude and eagerness will result in him being an ever present in the Trafford Team for many years to come. Great individual performances from Joe Kennedy, Che Booth, Sean Hopwood, Lorcan Kelly, Freddy John and Jacob

Trafford Athletic Club Junior Section Newsletter February 2012 Dunn; the majority who will still be in this age group next season. Joe Kennedy won selection to the Greater Manchester Team for the North West Championships. The Under 11 Girls had a great season, with the majority of the team being very young. The experienced athletes of the team, Molly Larkin and Jameelah Olugududu performed exceptionally in all their events and really took the younger girls under their wings. As always, Sportshall gives the opportunity for the younger athletes a chance to shine and make the YAL Team Managers aware of their abilities. This year saw great performances from Issi Boyle, Leila Gardiner and Layla Wiseman, which will have them firmly identified for great things in the future. The U11 Girls in particular look like a group of athletes that will all impact on North West athletics for some time to come. Molly Larkin and Jameelah Olugududu won selection for the Greater Manchester Team for the North West Championships. The Under 13 Girls had a great season especially taking into account that they will still all, bar Emily, be in this age group next year. This group of girls are an incredibly hard working bunch Lili Boyle, Emily Nash, Kim Snape, Georgia Beaumont and Imojene Blackburn-Stennet. The Under 13 Boys dominate all before them. The Team of Ronni Brown, Rivvi Brown, Dom Blake, Josh Pemberton, Kaleb Marchen, James Frazer and Dougie Pitman were unapproachable in Sprints, Jumps and Throws. Again, the Under 15 Girls had a great season with really strong performances in the longer runs and jumps. The team of Tameika Cuff, Chanelle Lauder, Charlotte Wood, Zoe Gibson and Rochelle John produced excellent times. The Under 15 Boys team of Jerell Marchan and Danny Wassall although small in numbers was huge in the quality of performances. Jerell won every event he entered and Danny either won or came a close second to Jerell!

Sportshall County Championships

The County Championships again proved to be a medal frenzy for Trafford Athletes. In the U11 Girls match, Jameelah Olugududo won Silver Medals in Vertical Jump & Long Jump. Sadie Beckford, on debut, and Issi Boyle both put in strong performances that bode well for the two youngest members of the team. The U11 Girls relay Team won Silver in the 2 lap race behind a strong and much older, Bolton team. The Under 13 Boys had a fantastic medals haul. In the 2 lap race, 1st Ronni Brown, 2nd Rivvi Brown, 3rd Josh Pemberton. The 4 lap race had the same outcome, 1st Ronni Brown, 2nd Rivvi Brown, 3rd Josh Pemberton. The Long Jump was 1st Rivvi Brown, 2nd Josh Pemberton. Vertical Jump was 1st Ronni Brown, 2nd Dom Blake. Kaleb Marchen picked up Silver in the Shot. The relay team of Ronni, Rivvi, Josh and Dom easily won their final by over 5 seconds from the 2nd placed team. The under 13 Girls had Georgia and Imojene placed 4th and 5th in the 2 lap race, with Imojene and Emily both coming 4th in the 4 lap and 6 lap race respectively. In the Vertical Jump Imojene and Georgia won Silver and Bronze respectively, with Lili picking up Bronze in the Standing Long Jump. In standing Triple Jump, Lili came 4th with Georgia in 5th. The day was rounded off with a Silver medal in the 2 Lap Relay. A great all round performance from a team that will still be in this age group next year. The two Under 15 Boys who competed again did not let anyone down. Gold Medals for Jerell Marchan in the 2 Lap race, Long Jump and Triple Jump and Gold for Danny Wassall in the 4 Lap race, Silver in the Triple Jump and Bronze in the Long Jump. The Girls saw Tameika Cuff claim Gold in the 4 lap race. In the 2 Lap race Tameika came 5th with Charlotte Wood coming 6th. In the 6 lap race Zoe Gibson battled well for a Bronze Medal and then gained another Bronze in the Shot Putt. Chanelle Lauder made an immediate impact with her Bronze Medal in the Standing Triple Jump. The team then won Silver in the 4x2 lap relay.

What can I compete in....

.....this coming summer? Competing for Trafford, there are three Leagues that Junior Athletes can compete in during the summer. As individuals there are Major National Championships that you may also be able to enter; as well as the Trafford Open Meetings. In this issue we will focus on the team events that Trafford enter. In the next issue we will focus on the individual competitions. The known fixtures for all this summers events are listed in the Fixtures section of this Newsletter. National Young Athletes League. This is the premier event for our young athletes. It is for athletes in the U13, U15 & U17 age groups (school years 6 & 7, 8 & 9, 10 & 11) This League is the first introduction for Young Athletes into the full event spectrum of major athletics competition and will see youngsters hurdling, pole vaulting, triple jumping, throwing javelins and hammers as well as the more familiar sprints and middle distance races. The events on offer increase in number as they move up the age groups. At under 13 there are a lot fewer events than at U17. We can only have 2 people competing in any event (A & B event) and each athlete can only compete in up to three events plus a relay. Because of the limited number of places, especially at the U13 & U15 age groups, selection on performance and ability to cover other events will take place prior to each match. The very competitive nature of this league means that we have to pick our strongest available team. Points are scored for competing in each event with more points being awarded for a win and decreasing with each position. We score points for both A & B runners so it is vitally important that we fill as many events as possible with A & B competitors. There is no charge for competing at Young Athletes League matches but a Trafford Team Vest must be worn. Vests can be purchased these from Karen Taker at Reception. (We also encourage the wearing of Royal Blue Shorts which can be purchased from JFC Sports in Hyde, via the internet) The London 2012 Olympics has resulted in the NYAL having to change its format this season. This year we will have three league matches against the same five teams. The overall points winner of this league will go forward to compete in the promotion match at Wigan. The second fixture is at Cleckheaton for which coach travel has been booked.

Trafford Athletic Club Junior Section Newsletter February 2012 National Junior League This is the premier event for our Junior Athletes and is primarily for athletes in the Under 20 age group but Under 17s can compete. (note all events are to U20s standards) This league offers a higher level of competition which is the pathway to selection for the Senior Teams. This League offers good competition at all events. Again it is vitally important that we have as high a turnout as possible for these fixtures so that we can try for promotion to the National Premier League. We will agree arrival/report times with athletes before the match. Athletes can compete in the following number of events: Under 20 Athletes 5 events including any relays. Under 17 Athletes 4 Events, 1 of which must be a relay. As with the YAL, there will be an A and B category in each event. Cheshire League This is a great team event which allows all age groups to compete together in a reduced event format. This is open to athletes in the Under 11 (years 4 & 5) age group, U13, U15, U17, U20 and Senior. The Cheshire League is a quick format event which offers a sprint, a middle distance race, a Jump, a throw and a relay race in each age group. We can run a large number of athletes in each race so we can use this as a trial for the YAL Team. It is also a good opportunity to try out other events. Cheshire League matches start at 1pm so we will meet at the host stadium at 12pm at the latest. There is a charge of 2 for competing athletes and Club vests must be worn. For Athletes in the Under 11 section this is the perfect way to see what happens at track & field matches and make your Trafford AC debut.
