Sustainable Change for Haiti

SUMMARY
PROBLEM
The problem, in the simplest form for many Haitians, is most of their time is consumed trying to take care of their basic needs. Thinking about tomorrow or their future is difficult when youre struggling to survive today.

COMPANY NAME HERE

Simple tasks for us in developed countries, like getting water to drink and cook with, are complex issues for them. Sometimes the water source is a mile or more away, and the water quality is horrible. More than half the deaths in Haiti are due to waterborne diseases. Challenges in farming include lack of water and battling the free roaming animals from eating the crops. Much of Haitis topsoil has been washed away due to deforestation and the fact that they failed to replant trees. Foreign aid is critical to the survival of many Haitians but has also contributed to some of their problems. People that live near food distribution centers that are given food no longer rely on purchasing food from local farmers and they in turn do not have enough money for their families and for the next planting season. Assisting Haiti must be done in a way that limits the impact to the local economy. Education is almost nonexistent in rural Haiti. More than 45% of the children have never stepped foot into a classroom. Those that are lucky enough to attend school are taught by teachers that most likely did not complete high school. Only 20% of the teachers in Haiti are educated. This is just one of the contributing factors that causes Haiti to graduate less than 2% of their students.

facilities and are certified with education degrees. In the 2012-2013 school year we will be teaching a Christian curriculum developed specifically for the failed education system of Haiti. This curriculum has been used at other mainstream schools and missions and it is very successful. Over 90% of the students are passing the national tests using this curriculum. Education does not stop in the classroom. What were teaching will be applied to their daily lives. The education we provide has to be able to be applied to show the value of the education. We will be teaching several sustainable projects that include square foot gardening, rabbit breeding, and starting a tree nursery. It is critical that each project is sustainable and can be Haitian lead. This proposal outlines several projects that we will be doing here in Haiti.

Funding Requirements
Kings Cross is immediately in need of $6000 to continue operations in Haiti. This money will be used to fund our operating costs until the end of April. It will allow us to keep the school open, pay teachers, provide 1000 meals a week, provide clean drinking water, buy fuel and pay for living expenses here in Haiti. This infusion of cash will allow us more time to find individual sponsors for each of our school kids. A child can be sponsored for $20 a month. We have a group coming in April that is seriously considering building our permanent school that will allow us to teach 500 children. Our other projects and their costs are outlined in this proposal, but cant be done without the current $6000 investment that we are in need of.

Solution
Kings Cross Ministries is a 501c3 in the USA and a foundation in Haiti. Our vision for the people of Haiti is to empower them through education and sustainable practices. We are a Christian organization that will share the love of God through practical ways and immersing ourselves in the community. Our vision includes drilling water wells and using bio sand water filters to clean the water. This will also make water more available for farming. Our school is the heart of Kings Cross. The school currently is Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our teachers are Haitian and have been trained at our

Projects
Kings Cross School
Education is the key to helping the Haitian people live a better life. Our school currently has 92 students. We offer Kindergarten thru 5th grade and will offer 6th grade next school year. We offer a quality Christian education and build strong foundations for both our students and teachers. Reaching families usually starts through the children of the community. We want to minister not only to the educational and spiritual needs of the students but minister to the familys needs as well. This school is an open door for sharing Gods love in a practical way. Jesus is not only our Savior, but he was also many other things as well. He was a leader, a friend, a student, and a teacher. We have all been called into ministry as Sons and Daughters of God. Jason and I have been called into ministry not only to our family but to the nation of Haiti. I personally have a vision to teach and educate teachers and students in Haiti. My desire is to help those that have a passion and desire to teach and provide more training in teacher education. A teacher can have the love and desire to teach, but needs the tools to be an effective teacher while making a lasting impact on the lives of the students. God has equipped us with many opportunities to teach and minister to different kinds of people. We want to use what to God has given us to reach others and especially the Haitian people. We want to be able to offer a good Christian education to the people of Haiti. Before the 2012-2013 school year we want to build a school that will allow us to educate 250 students in the morning and another 250 in the afternoon. We can educate a child for $20 a month. That includes a meal before and after school, books, uniforms and teacher pay. The school is in the design phase but should cost $80,000 or less. We will use the school we are using now as an early Subhead. education center. Subhead. Subhead.

Rabbit Breeding
Why rabbits? One thing you need to keep in mind is that Haiti does not produce animal feed. Feed can be purchased but it is not made in Haiti and is very expensive. This creates some issues bringing in chicken breeds that produce more meat then the standard Haitian chicken. They require lots of feed and dont do well in the heat of Haiti. Butchering a chicken also takes some time and it is best to do several at the same time but they do not have a way to refrigerate the meat. The native Haitian rabbit does very well in Haiti. Five rabbits can produce over 200 rabbits a year. Rabbits are a great source of protein and can be butchered in less than 5 minutes. There is no need to refrigerate because you only butcher a rabbit when youre ready to cook. This program will start off with 10 rabbits and we will have to buy feed while we begin to grow food ourselves. The project cost is $300 and could produce 400 rabbits a year. Breeding pairs will be loaned out once quality offspring is produced.

Square Foot Gardening

Square foot gardening is the practice of planning small but intensively planted gardens. The practice combines concepts from other organic gardening methods, including a strong focus on compost, closely planted raised beds and bio- intensive attention to a small, clearly defined area. Proponents claim that the method is particularly well-suited for areas with poor soil. We will be growing food using this method and will help others in the community start their own gardens using natural stone and rabbit manure. The project will be $1,000 and has the potential to radically change the entire community.

Clean Water
We are partnering with other ministries to get water wells drilled in our area. We have two Bio Sand water filter forms that will allow us to build filters using materials found in the area. We will place these filters at the current water source until the water wells are drilled to help fight waterborne illness. Our budget for this project is $5,000.

Projects Cont.
Guest House
Many of the groups we have talked to expressed a desire to come help us with our projects. Having a guest house could reduce our building costs from $30 per square foot down to $10 per square foot. The project cost is $30,000 but this project will allow us to save several times its cost.

Kings Cross Village

Not all of Haitis orphans are adoptable. Some parents dont want to give up parental rights and others cant be found to get paperwork in order. Regardless of the reason we would like to help raise the next generation of Haitis leaders. Our orphanage takes a different approach then most. Our children will be living in a village environment where they will live with a mommy and 6 to 8 brothers and sisters. They will function as a family. They will learn to live as a family so when it comes time for them to start families of their own they will be better equipped to handle their new lives. Phase 1 will start off with a bathhouse and two homes. We will continue to add up to what we believe will be 6 homes. We would like to build a indoor recreation area as well. The project cost will need a minimum of $25,000 for phase 1. Each house will cost an additional $6000 and will include naming rights. The rec center is still in design stages but should cost under $25,000.

Village Solar Oven

We have an opportunity to create small businesses in Haiti to provide jobs. This project is not included in any of our phases. It is a separate project that is unfunded. We would like to open a small bakery using a Solar Oven. A Villager Sun Oven when utilized as a Sun Bakery can save over 150 tons of wood annually which results in the reduction of 277 tons of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions annually and preserves forests and reduces the stain on Haitis environment. We would like to look into this a little deeper to see what negative impacts this might cause in the open market area. If there are a few vendors already selling bread we might choose to partner with them or hire them instead of creating competition. We could also provide fresh bread to other missions. The initial investment is approximately $15,000 and for more information visit: http://www.sunoven.com/international/villagersun-ovens.php

Other Projects
We have a coffee been company that has partnered with us to provide plants to our people and will buy the beans for $3 per pound. They are also giving us fruit trees to shade the coffee beans. We have a discipleship program that teaches our kids how to minister to others and they get their own Bible. We want to build a church for our area. We have a tractor that helps the local farmers work the land. We want to buy a few pigs. We live so out of the way that we have to drive our teachers to school each day. We are in need of a few more vehicles that could be bought for between $2500 to $6500.

Tree Nursery
We plan on starting a tree nursery as soon as we hit the ground. These trees might take 3 to 5 years to produce fruit so we will not see immediate results but in time we will be able to use the trees for another micro business or ministry. We plan on growing several shade trees also. The project cost is $1,000.

Kids for Kids

We want to buy some goats for breeding stock. These goats will be used to produce quality offspring that will be given away but the first two offspring must be given away as well. Livestock management classes will be required. The project cost is $1,000.
