Sir Alec Reed Founder, The Big Give Limited Chairman of the Reed Foundation c/o 6 Sloane Street London SW1X 9LE By Email : info@theBigGive.org.uk

Dear Sir Alec OFFICIAL COMPLAINT I write to complain that The Big Give has permitted a charity called CARE (Christian Action Research and Education) to fundraise using your website. The charity is using your website to raise money for Evaluate....informing choice which is part of CAREs Sex and Relationship Education programme and aims to provide a suitable, family focussed and marriage friendly programme for use with Key Stage 2 children. The statement on your website says that the Secondary Education programme already developed by the charity is designed to help young people make value choices and strengthen family relations. I have attached a copy of the relevant page of your website. The same charity also has two other fundraising appeals on your site. In April 2009, CARE co-sponsored a conference entitled Sex and the City : Redeeming sex today at which topics discussed included Therapeutic approaches to and understandings of Same-Sex Attraction and Mentoring the sexually broken. The three speakers are all on record as practising treatments or cures for homosexuality. Joseph Nicolosis website is here : http://www.josephnicolosi.com/ I have attached a copy of the conference flier for your information. You will note the CARE logo and the fact that they are named as co-sponsors.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists have stated : There is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed. Furthermore, so-called treatments of homosexuality create a setting in which prejudice and discrimination flourish. I therefore write to complain that in allowing the charity CARE to fundraise via your website for the purpose of developing primary school age sex and relationship education material amongst other projects, The Big Give is actively providing support to a charity which, according to the statement from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, could be seen to be promoting discrimination and prejudice. I consider this possibility to be against the spirit of equality and diversity and a breach of your own equalities and diversity policy. I urge you to remove these fundraising appeals from your website and to make a public statement to the effect that you will no longer accept fundraising appeals from the charity CARE. Yours sincerely,

Phillip Dawson

Evaluateinforming choice
The Big Idea
CAREs Sex and Relationship Education programme Evaluateinforming choice for people in Secondary Education is designed to help young people make value choices strengthen family relations. Concerned parents, teachers and school governors are fre approaching CARE requesting a suitable, family focused and marriage-friendly progra use with Key Stage 2 children. Building on the success of Evaluate, we want to respon need by developing a Primary Schools programme.

Details

At present, Evaluate provides an education opportunity for young people in Secondary Edu Already over 45,000 young people have attended the programme, which is delivered to ye groups by 110 trained volunteers in over 130 schools across the UK. Our teams use multipresentations to engage young people in discussion about various aspects of relationships sexual choice. Children aged 11 and 12 years old (Year 7) are encouraged and supported delaying the onset of sexual experience until a long-term, committed and exclusive relation ideally marriage. Returning to the same children in Year 9 and again in Year 11, this mess enhanced. There is an increasing awareness that current practice in Sex Education is not serving you people well. Mixed messages are being received through the classroom, media and among peers, based on the assumption that teenagers will soon be sexually active and simply nee to do this safely, fostering a mentality of negativity. Working from the understanding that m issues confronting young people stem from low self-esteem, Evaluate tackles media influe and peer pressure as well as drug and alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted infections and t pregnancy. There is a critical need to develop a values-based Personal Social and Health Education (P programme for Key Stage 2 children. The new programme will be aimed at children aged 9 (Year 5 & 6). It will provide a more holistic PSHE programme, with an emphasis on raising esteem, growing up and friendship. Read more about the Charity running this project.

Royal College of Psychiatrists Position Statement on Sexual Orientation PS01/2010 15 February 2010 The Royal College of Psychiatrists wishes to clarify that homosexuality is not a psychiatric disorder. In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association concluded there was no scientific evidence that homosexuality was a disorder and removed it from its diagnostic glossary of mental disorders. The International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization followed suit in 1992. The Royal College of Psychiatrists holds the view that lesbian, gay and bisexual people are and should be regarded as valued members of society who have exactly similar rights and responsibilities as all other citizens. This includes equal access to healthcare, the rights and responsibilities involved in a civil partnership, the rights and responsibilities involved in procreating and bringing up children, freedom to practise a religion as a lay person or religious leader, freedom from harassment or discrimination in any sphere and a right to protection from therapies that are potentially damaging, particularly those that purport to change sexual orientation. The Royal College of Psychiatrists believes strongly in evidence-based treatment. There is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed. Furthermore, so-called treatments of homosexuality create a setting in which prejudice and discrimination flourish. There is now a large body of research evidence that indicates that being gay, lesbian or bisexual is compatible with normal mental health and social adjustment. However, the experiences of discrimination in society and possible rejection by friends, families and others, such as employers, means that some lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience a greater than expected prevalence of mental health and substance misuse problems. Good Psychiatric Practice clearly states: A psychiatrist must provide care that does not discriminate and is sensitive to issues of gender, ethnicity, colour, culture, lifestyle, beliefs, sexual orientation, age and disability (page 12, point 13).1 The Royal College of Psychiatrists expects all its members to follow Good Psychiatric Practice.
