WORKING: Wastewater is pumped from the cooling pond to settling tank. While the settling tank is being filled, required quantity of alum solution and coagulant solution is added to the settling tank. Once the settling tank gets filled up to the predetermined level, the particulates in wastewater are allowed to settle. The settled sludge is first removed and passed through a fabric filter/bag. The fabric filter/bag retains the sludge and allows the water to pass trough which is collected at the bottom part of the tank is sent back to the cooling pond through gravity. The sludge collected inside the fabric filter/bag is removed at regular intervals for drying. The supernatant water from settling tank is then passed through sand filter where remaining suspended particulates get trapped and clean water is sent to charcoal

filter. In charcoal filter, the dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including phenols get absorbed and hence the colour of the wastewater changes from dark yellow to colorless / pale yellow. This water is then recycled back to the cooling pond. This completes the wastewater treatment cycle. LOGIC:There are two level sensors i.e. a Low Level Sensor (LLS) and a High Level Sensor (HLS) in the intermediate settling tank. As soon as the start button is pressed, Pump-1 starts and fills the settling tank in 10 minutes. Alum solution is pumped by pump3 from alum solution tank for specific duration of time (12 L in 86 seconds) and solenoid valve (15 mm solenoid valve with 180 opening) of coagulant solution tank also opens for about 30 seconds. These two operations start simultaneously with the start of Pump-1 and remains open till specified quantity of solutions are added to wastewater in the settling tank. When High Level Sensor (HLS) gives a signal, Pump-1 stops. After this a delay of 30 minutes starts which allows the particulates to settle down in the intermediate settling tank. After 30 minutes, solenoid valve (20 mm solenoid valve with 180 opening) in the intermediate settling tank opens for about 1-2 minutes and sludge is removed. After this, Pump-2 starts and water from intermediate settling tank is passed through sand filter and charcoal filter. As soon as LLS in the intermediate settling tank is activated i.e. Level goes down (approx. 1 hr for 2500 LPH flow), pump-2 stops. Pump-1 starts immediately after pump-2 stops and thus the above cycle is repeated. Total cycle time: 10 + 30 + 2 + 60 = 102 minutes
