I CANT HEAR YOU
First of all, thanks to Te Jet for stepping in and helping out with
the last Ravings. Except that his head swelled three sizes and the
additional demands for a kibble increase, he is taking his new
fame all in stride.
For the past couple of weeks I have had a wax blockage in
my right ear. So I checked the Internet for a reliable method
of cleaning it, without suering permanent hearing loss. Te
suggested method was using mineral oil to sofen and eventually
get rid of the wax. Afer several days of treatment, the right ear
seemed a bit better but the lef ear (which I didnt treat) seemed
to suer from hearing loss. While I discovered that there were
signifcant benefts to having impaired hearing ... such as no
longer having to pretend to ignore the Missus ... it has also been
an annoying experience, as there is occasionally, a person that I
actually want to listen to.
Hating to impose on the health care system, I fnally broke
down and visited the doctor. Unfortunately, the wax was so
impacted that she wanted me to use the mineral oil for another
week to sofen everything up so it could be blasted out. I will
very shortly be going back and hopefully before I fnish this
Ravings, my hearing will be fully restored. Assuming that my
hearing does return to normal, I need to fnd a way to have the
doctor sign a note indicating that my hearing has, however,
suered a permanent change. I wont be able to hear any sounds
in the lower range. Te lower range is defned as sounds that
come from someone fve foot tall or shorter. Hearing will work
perfectly for all higher ranges of sound.
WOW, just got back from the doctors of ce and I CAN HEAR!!!
Ooops, sorry dear ... What did you say?? Ahhh heaven!!
Unfortunately, the doctor was unwilling to confrm the
permanent loss of low range hearing, so I will have to continue
to rely on the old stand-by selective hearing!!

outdoor skating rink is open daily (weather permitting). We
encourage you to wear a helmet while skating and for everyones
safety, the use of sticks and pucks is prohibited on the ice. For

Walking/Running Routes: Challenge yourself to trying one, or
all three, of our walking/running routes. Located in the heart
of the community, the routes begin and end at the Quispamsis
Arts & Culture Park. Te 1km, 2.5km, and 5km routes were
created to support residents in living a more active lifestyle. A
map of the routes is located at the entrance to the park, and
colour-coded arrows are placed throughout the streets to assist
you in navigating the routes. Individual copies of the map are
also available at the main counter at the Town Hall and on our
website.

Annual Dinner: Plans are underway for our annual fundraising
dinner, and the committee has begun meeting to organize the
event for Saturday, May 12

at St. Marks. Well need volunteers
to assist with the planning committee, obtaining auction items,
and helping out at the event. Its always a great committee to
work with and a great event!

KV WOODWORKERS CLUb
Te KV Woodworkers Club is a non-proft organization
operating from Rothesay High School.
Happenings: Members have been enjoying this winter inside,
making projects in the shop. I see tables, stools, cabinets,
entertainment centers, picture frames and benches. Tere are
fancy turned bowls, spurtles, and candlesticks. Te school
students have begun their second semester, and the new students
entering the Mill and Cabinet class have been learning how to
use the tools and equipment safely.
Tis weeks tip from Chips: StopSaw Safety - two years ago, the
school shop acquired a new table saw by StopSaw. It uses a
blade breaking system that, when the spinning blade comes in
contact with anything that will conduct electricity, fres a small
explosive device that drives an aluminum brake into the blade,
stopping it in a millisecond. Te inertia of the spinning blade, at
the same time, is spent in drawing the blade below the surface
of the table. Tis is designed to stop the blade should human
fesh come in contact with the blade. Now, we know it works.
Recently a new member was using the saw to rip some reclaimed
lumber. Tere was a nail buried in the wood and when the blade
came in contact with the nail, the brake was fred and the blade
was stopped and withdrawn below the table. It is reassuring to
know the safety brake works. A reminder to all - the safety brake
is activated by more than our fngers. Anything that conducts
electricity will activate the brake; wet wood, nails and screws
and hopefully, fngers.
About Our Club: Members may have access to the school shop
facilities, 24/7. New members are welcome. Annual fees are

VOLUNTEER TAX PROgRAM
Each spring, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) trains
volunteers to be able to prepare income tax returns for the
current or prior years, using a CRA-approved computer sofware
program. Single clients with income under $25,000 a year, or
couples under $35,000, can have their basic tax returns prepared
and fled electronically free of charge.
Clinics have operated one or two days a week during tax
season for a number of years at the Seniors Resource Centre in
Brunswick Square, the Salvation Army of ce on Prince Edward
Street, and several other locations in Saint John. Tis year, as
last, a clinic will operate in Rothesay to serve residents of the
Kennebecasis Valley. It will be at St. Pauls Parish Centre on
the Rothesay Common on Tuesdays from February 28
th
-April
24
th
inclusive, from 9:00am-12:00noon and 1:00-3:00pm. No
appointments are necessary; service is on a frst-come frst-
served basis. Clients can, if they wish, fll in an information
sheet and leave their returns for completion later.

SPRINg SWORDS
Renforth Fencing club is a going
concern these days with fencing held
on Mondays and Tursdays for ages
nine through adult. We meet at St.
James the Less Church in Rothesay.
And there are sually have two
beginner classes running at 7:00pm
and one mixed adult class and
one intermediate class. As fencers
progress in their skill, some also join
Fundy Fencing in town for more
advanced training. A number of
fencers that have been part of our club
have gone on to fence in the Canada
Games and even internationally.
Anyone can begin Fencing at any
time in their life; and while it is an
individual sport it also has team
elements, when attending certain
tournaments. Tere is a great sense
of camaraderie, honour, respect,
discipline and technical skill. Fencing
is also not an expensive sport to
begin as most clubs, including this
one, provide all the equipment while
the student is learning the sport.

SCRAggLY gOAT??
It started last fall when someone dropped by while I was not
home, called me later on in the week and said that while in my
driveway there was a scraggly looking goat hanging around. I
said there just couldnt be a goat roaming around and didnt
give it much thought. Ten a few weeks later my Dad described
something he had seen, but so far I had not laid eyes on anything
that was as strange as the description he gave me.
Two weeks ago, I was sitting in my dining room and peripherally
I saw a movement outside my patio door. Tere she was! I do
believe she will not get any bigger and surely will always carry
the markings she has now. Tank goodness for the mild winter
we have had as I am not sure she could have survived, being so
small.

anniversary edition of the Belfast childrens Project is
now in full swing for this summer. Te organizing committee
is currently seeking host families for our 12 young visitors who
will be arriving towards the end of June afer the summer school
dismissal. We have a fun summer scheme planned for all of the
young people and are excited to welcome back our friends from
the Fort William Youth Centre and New Lodge Youth Centre.
Youth leaders Frances Du and Mary Madine will accompany
the children on their trip. If you have a child in the 11-13 year

A St. Pattys breakfast will be held on Sunday, March 11

30 YEARS AND COUNTINg
A few weeks ago I realized the Hampton Herald is turning 30 in
April. Tat led to the further realization that the Valley Viewer
will be 20 in the fall. Although both magazines were already in
place when Mike and I got involved in this venture, amazingly
12 of those years have been under our guidance. And to think
it all started as a little retirement project for Helen and Bert
Boyd.
I have started to think about the possibility of my own
retirement, as I am now closer to sixty than ffy (or even ffy-
fve!), but I keep getting stuck on what would fll my days. Te
frst twenty years of life are spent learning - how to walk, how to
talk, how to get along in the world, how to earn a living. Ten we
spend some forty years raising families and working, working
and raising families. Busy, busy, busy. Afer the intensity of those
frst sixty years, certainly a little slow-down sounds good, but not
a dead stop. Are the next thirty years perhaps an opportunity to
become more involved in community, volunteering at charities
and non-profts and service clubs, working to make the world
(whether local or in the broader sense) a better place? Or perhaps
retirement can be an opportunity to return to the learning
environment, to pursue learning for its own sake instead of
worrying whether it can get you a job/career. Universities ofen
have free tuition for those of a certain age. Maybe some part-
time work?
For sure I am getting a little ahead of myself as I anticipate at
least a couple of more years before retiring, but one of the big
considerations is what will happen to Ossekeag. Who will be the
next caretaker of what Helen and Bert Boyd frst created back
in 1982? What will the next thirty years look like? And speaking
of thirty . . . Time and Tide wait for no man, but time always
