FEATURE FROM THE FUTURE

He strides through the empty halls of the White House, his perfectly tailored suit mimicking his every move. In the Oval Office, the piercing eyes of the cameras focus on his stern visage. He commands that seat at his desk, that desk where he sits down to address the nation. Hes very familiar with the process he gives a radio and a television address every week. But this time, his cause is much more urgent. A terrorist attack has been launched on the United States, he begins. Please remain calm, and stay in your homes. We have taken every action possible to ensure the safety of our citizens. His voice echoes throughout the country, his face projected into every single residence in the country. All eyes are trained on him, watching and listening intently. He is James Speranza, 60th President of the United States. This, of course, is the story of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2075 on Washington, DC. As the commander-in-chief, clearly this was a defining moment of Speranzas presidency. But with the 2076 general election rapidly approaching, does Speranza stand a chance of being re-elected?

His Cabinet and his various sessions of Congress were responsible for the end of United States involvement in WWIII, as well as for passing landmark legislation on climate change and the countrys budget. Even with these great accomplishments under his belt, Speranzas road to a second term in the White House may not be an easy one. Interested in politics at a young age, James Speranza was a natural when he stepped into office. He obtained his high school diploma at Radnor High School, one of the best in the country, and then went on to graduate from Harvard with a law degree and a major in Political Sciences. Speranza is still single, making him one of the only presidents without a First Lady.

Starting as a Pennsylvania State Senator, he then went on to serve for an impressive 10 years in the House of Representatives, eventually reaching the position of Majority Whip for the Democratic Party. While Speranza has much experience in politics, fierce Republican challengers for the presidency such as Daniel Carlston and Anika Jagasia have recently garnered an appreciable amount of support from the conservative base.

When Speranza was inaugurated in 2073, he was faced with the daunting task of commanding US armed forces in WWIII. Against such fearsome enemies as Germany and Italy, no one thought that the United States would stand a chance; Speranza, however, knew this and chose to end involvement in the war to minimize American losses. Disaster struck again in 2075 with the terrorist attacks of September 11 on the Capitol and Supreme Court Buildings. Even with these tragic events occurring in his first term, Speranza and his legislature managed to pass landmark legislation that reduced pollution and also stimulated job growth in America. These great accomplishments will most likely be promoted by his campaign to earn him votes in key swing states like Florida and Pennsylvania. Even if President Speranza is not re-elected, his many accomplishments will live on. His work on ending the involvement in WWIII will help to promote peace and diplomacy worldwide. The way that his administration and the FBI handled the September 11, 2075 terrorism attacks set a precedent for treating dangerous criminals, and his revolutionary new air pollution regulations and policies will continue to mitigate the widespread effects of global warming.

In his own words, Speranza asserts that recently the United States has been in turmoil. My first term hasnt been a very typical four years. Although he came from a humble background, James Speranza has risen up to the challenge of leading the United States. My presidency has been no bed of roses, he adds. I never thought I could make any difference in the world, but just look at where I am now.
