Before You Start

Prerequisites

Warning: You must have read the Safety Reference Manual for the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit before you switch on the glossing unit for the first time. This manual is delivered in printed form with the glossing unit. This Startup Guide assumes that all the hardware, software, and network components of your glossing unit and NexGlosser software are installed, configured, and operating correctly. Operators of the glossing unit must have attended an authorized training course for operators of this device. For more information on such courses, please contact the local NexPress agency which is responsible for you. To use this manual, you should:

be familiar with using a personal computer, have a basic working knowledge of the Windows XP operating system.

Structure of this documentation This Startup Guide is divided up into the following chapters:

Chapter 2, Startup Routine, provides a step-by-step description of how to start the glossing unit and what to do if startup fails. Introduction to the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit


The Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit is a self-contained finishing unit designed to increase the gloss level on sheets which have been printed with a Clear Overcoat of Kodak NexPress clear dry ink at a Kodak NexPress digital production color press. The glossing unit is classified as a near-line unit. Main components of the glossing unit: Glossing unit Monitor and keyboard

Each individual printed job intended for glossing at the glossing unit displays a bar code on the banner and/or press sheets. This bar code contains the substrate information and glosser set points required to set up the gloss job. When the data in the bar code is

read using the Bar Code Scanner at the glossing unit, these are displayed in the user interface of the NexGlosser glossing unit software.

Startup Routine 2 Startup Routine

Startup routine

Warning: You must have read the Safety Reference Manual for the glossing unit before you switch on the glossing unit for the first time. This manual is delivered in printed form with the glossing unit. Follow the routine below to energize the glossing unit and launch the NexGlosser software. Powering on the glossing unit

1. Go to the rear of the glossing unit. 2. Move the 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER - B1103 at the rear of the glossing unit to the upward position:

Under normal circumstances the Mini PC of the glossing unit is automatically booted. After approximately one minute the monitor displays the Windows XP startup screen with the log in prompt for the glossing unit.

Now go to the section: Logging in to the NexGlosser software (see page 24). If the Mini PC fails to start up, perform the following steps: 3. Open the door of the Computer Housing located below the keyboard to access the Mini PC of the glossing unit.

4. Press the Standby Switch on the Mini PC:

5. Check that the monitor is switched on. 6. The Mini PC starts up and the Windows XP startup screen with the log in prompt for the glossing unit displays. 7. Now go to the section: Logging in to the NexGlosser software (see page 24).

Logging in to the NexGlosser software After the Mini PC has been booted, the Windows XP startup screen with the log in prompt for the glossing unit displays:

8. In the Type your Password field enter the password glosser. 9. On the keyboard, press the Enter key. The Windows XP Desktop displays. 10. From the Desktop double-click the NexGlosser icon to launch the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit software.

The log in dialog box displays:

11. From the Language drop-down list, select your language preference for the NexGlosser software:

The default language is English. 12. From the User Name drop-down list, select operator. 13. In the Password text box, type user. The password is case-sensitive. 14. Click OK. 15. Wait for the NexGlosser software to finish launching. This takes approximately 20 seconds. The Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit window should then display, showing five tabs. If this is the case, go directly to step 20.

If the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit window fails to display within one minute, reboot the functional unit by performing a power cycle to the 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER - B1103 located at the rear of the glossing unit.

To do this: (16.) Move the 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER - B1103 into the down position. (17.) Wait several seconds to give the electronics time to react to the power cycle. (18.) Move the 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER - B1103 back into the up position. (19.) Wait one minute. This gives the functional units time to connect for the first time with the software.

20. Once the connection between the glossing unit and the Mini PC is established, the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit main window should display, showing five tabs:

The glossing unit is now in the Sleeping mode and ready to accept jobs for glossing. At the bottom left of the window, the access level of the current user is displayed. This indicates that the NexGlosser software has been successfully launched. For information on how to use the Glosser software, please read the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit Users Guide in the Documentation Library.

If startup should fail If the startup routine as described in this chapter fails, there can be a number of reasons for this. The following list shows problems which can occur surrounding this process. Not all tabs display in the Glosser view Problem: Under normal circumstances the following five tabs display across the top of the NexGlosser main window after startup: Glossing Unit, Service Software, Maintenance, Report Generator and NexPert OSS. If not all of these tabs display after a reasonable amount of time, the NexGlosser software has not launched correctly. What to do: Reset the electronics of the glossing unit by performing a power cycle to the CIRCUIT BREAKER - B1103:

This is done as follows: 1. Move the 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER - B1103 into the down position. 2. Wait several seconds to give the electronics time to react to the power cycle.

If the software for some reason fails to close, click the NexGlosser symbol in the taskbar at the bottom of your Windows XP desktop:

A DOS shell window opens, displaying information (in English) which may help you to identify problems relating to the launch of the NexGlosser software. If this information does not help, close the DOS shell by clicking on the X in the top right corner. 6. Restart the NexGlosser software by repeating steps 10 to 15 in the procedure in the section Startup routine (see page 21). 7. If the problem persists, call Escalation.

Main window of NexGlosser software fails to display Problem: After the log in to the NexGlosser software, the NexGlosser software splashscreen displays as usual, but the NexGlosser software main window fails to appear. On-line help systems When you log in to the NexGlosser software, you see two buttons with the following functions near the bottom of the NexGlosser window:

Kodak NexPert OSS button: Launches Kodak NexPert OSS Help button: Launches the Users Guide Kodak NexPert OSS is the operator support system for the glossing unit. It describes servicing procedures for the glossing unit and provides you with access to the Documentation Library.

Find out more: Documentation Library (see page 34). Each time you click the NexPert OSS button, a new and additional NexPert OSS tab is added. Each new NexPert OSS tab initially displays the NexPert OSS home page. Such additional NexPert OSS tabs can be closed by clicking the Delete Tab button: Additional NexPert OSS tab

NexPert OSS can also be called up by directly clicking the NexPert OSS tab. The original NexPert OSS tab cannot be closed and is always available in the Kodak NexGlosser glossing unit window.

The Help button opens the Users Guide for the glossing unit This provides information about the basic functionality of the glossing unit and the software which is used to operate it. Documentation Library The NexPert OSS Documentation Library for the glossing unit allows you to access documents providing information on the use of the glossing unit. These documents are is in the Adobe Portable Document format (PDF). Access to the Documentation Library To access the contents of the Documentation Library, please proceed as described below. 1.
