MASS SCHEDULE
GIRARD Sat. 5:30pm Sun. 10:00 am ARMA 4:00pm 8:00 am

There is a story about three men who were pouring into a trough a mixture of water, sand, lime and other ingredients. A passer-by asked them what they were doing. The first said, "I am making mortar." The second: "I am laying bricks." But the third said, "I am building a cathedral." They were doing the same thing, but each looked at it differently. And what a difference that made! We can see something similar in the way people relate to their church, why they give. One person says, "Oh! All they do down there is ask for money." The second person replies, "Well, you have to pay the bills." But the third person says, "I am building the Body of Christ." The three are doing the same thing, but what a difference in their attitudes! Last Sunday I was talking about authority. Especially with regards to faith and morals, that the church is entrusted by Christ with His authority (Mt. 16:18). However, it is also true that there are priests and even bishops (and even popes in the olden times) that, as individuals, faltered in their role and as such caused a scandal and led some to fall astray from the catholic church. Experiencing such is almost like Job in our first reading today that felt frustrated with his sufferings. My thought is always this: shall we cut down the whole tree because some of its fruits are rotten? No matter how good the tree, not all the fruits will be perfect. The same is true with the church, especially with its human nature. Some will fail, but this should never discourage us. Instead, we should be like Saint Pauls attitude in our second reading where he said, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some

St. Blas: Bishop & Martyr St. Blas became Bishop of Antioch in Turkey while still quite young. He was a fierce teacher of the Catholic Faith. During the persecution of Emperor Licinius, in the early 4th Century, he withdrew to a cave and lived among animals, where he cared for them and cured some. Once, while soldiers were seeking wild beasts for the amphitheater, they found Blas and took him before the Emperor. He was thrown in prison for his loyalty to God. On his way to jail, he healed many, among them a boy near death with a fishbone piercing his throat. In those days, fish was the common food for the people. At his intercession, the child was relieved of the bone and saved. The soldiers tortured him in prison to get him to renounce the Church. They stretched his body on a rack, beat him with rods, and tore his flesh with huge iron combs, but he wouldnt budge. Finally, they beheaded him in 316 A.D. His feast day was Friday, February 3rd and the Church gives us the blessing of the throat by holding two candles there in the form of a St. Andrews Cross. There is nothing superstitious about this blessing. It must be approached with faith. The KEY WORD is intercession, because thats what the saints do for us --they intercede for us with the Father. Why the throat? Because the throat is the CENTER for life, itself. Air and food pass through here. Speech is located here. Its a good time to give it, in winter, when colds and viruses are more frequent. Take advantage of the blessing, all the while remembering the great faith that St. Blas had! Time and God Its no accident that people the world over, have built clocks into the steeples of their churches. Reduce life to its simplest parts and what to do you have? TIME and GOD. TIME marks the beginning of life. It measures the growth of our bodies, provides opportunity for work and play, shows us our limitations, and then one day, Time leaves us behind But GOD is the origin of life. He measures the growth of our souls, He provides our strength and forgives our weakness, but never wants to leave us behind; God calls us on --even beyond the circle of time. We find material security & temporal happiness as we learn to respect TIME. We find spiritual security & eternal happiness as we learn to love GOD!
