A brief history of the FILIPINO-AMERICAN ASSOCIATION of PHILADELPHIA, INC. (FAAPI)

As early as 1912, Mr. Agrifino M. Jaucian began organizing some 200 Filipino navy personnel who settled
in the Philadelphia area. With Jaucian as founding president, the Filipino-American Association of Philadelphia, Inc. (FAAPI) developed its constitution and bylaws in 1917 and was officially chartered and incorporated in 1925. As the first Filipino American organization incorporated in the Delaware Valley, FAAPI is believed to be the oldest continuously active Filipino American organization in the United States. Throughout its history, FAAPI has been at the forefront of Filipino socio-cultural activities in the Greater Philadelphia area. FAAPI was designated to represent the new Republic of the Philippines during the 1946 Philippine Independence Day celebration highlighted by a Grand Military Parade from Reyburn Plaza to Independence Hall. It started the ever popular dinner-dances among Filipinos and Filipino-Americans. FAAPI continues to hold its annual Rizal Dinner Ball (started in the early 1920s) to commemorate the martyrdom of Philippine hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal as well as to crown Miss Maria Clara (started in the early 1970s). Inspired by Maria Clara in Rizals classic novels, FAAPIs Miss Maria Clara beauty pageant promotes the grace and dignity of the ideal Filipina woman. FAAPI also honors the virtues of motherhood through its annual Mother of the Year celebration (started in the 1950s). In the 1970s, the organization purchased a building at 433 West Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. FAAPIs building was the first ever Philippine community center in the Delaware Valley. It housed the organization and was utilized by other groups for various events until the building was sold. When the United States celebrated its Bicentennial in 1976, FAAPI was the lead organizer of the Filipino community and received a grant from the City of Philadelphia to organize educational activities for both its senior citizens as well as its youth group that included folk dancers. The FAAPI Dance Troupe would give birth to other dance troupes in the area. FAAPIs legacy lies in its long-term commitment to promoting Filipino culture and traditions while supporting meaningful causes. FAAPI organized language classes, joined marches, parades and Christmas caroling. It continues to support local groups such as the Seamens Church Institute and Veterans and has responded to overseas calamities. FAAPI is constantly looking for self-motivated Filipino youth, not only to maintain its rich history as a civic organization but to provide them with opportunities to give and to understand sacrifice. FAAPI maintains collaborative partnerships with local student organizations and youth groups as well as non-profit organizations like the AARP and the Philadelphia Corporation for the Aging. During this centennial year FAAPI hopes to formally unveil to the public the long-awaited first-ever Filipino mural on the East Coast of the U.S. It has as its long-term objective to reclaim, build, and purchase a new Philippine Center of Philadelphia which will provide services to all, most especially to Filipino Philadelphian youth and senior citizens. Since its inception, 35 presidents have served the organization. The City of Philadelphia honored FAAPI and its leaders with a large Presidential Hall of Fame plaque with the inscription: To those who devoted themselves faithfully and unselfishly for the cause of Philippine heritage, identity and recognition among many cultures of nations, and ethnicity in the city of Philadelphia.
