Bonds wins big on
Bud Light rail Big hicket Divison
The Bud Light Trail Big Thicket Division held their frst tournament of the year on Lake Sam
Rayburn on Sunday January 29 with 34 teams. Jason Bonds came in on top though, with a limit
weighing 20.06 lbs. Bonds said, The morning started off slow, I didnt catch any fsh until 8:30. After
I caught the frst bass, it was pretty steady for about two hours. I caught 30 to 35 fsh and culled 5
times. All of the fsh came from using Strike Pros Flap Jack in a new color fshing in six to eight feet
of grass. The HydroWave played a big part in todays win. Every time I caught a fsh, it seemed as if the
Hydro Wave would keep them going. Bonds is sponsored by Strike Pro, Legend, Mercury, Power Pole,
Combat Jigs, Kicker Fish, Sun Dog, Gobbins Rods, and HydroWave.
Keith White and Brian Branum brought home second place and big bass trophies/checks for their
18.37 lbs limit containing an 8.25 lb kicker. They were fshing Midway back in a big creek...throwing
a GRT Jig and Rat-L-Trap. They said their day was slow, they caught their frst keeper around 9:30 in
the morning and their biggest came between 11 a.m. and noon. White and Branum are sponsored by
Santone Lures, Upgrade Fishing, Sam Rayburn Tackle Monkey, R1-Bass, and Fun N Sun Skeeter Boat
Sales. Branum said that R1-Bass has been very helpful with the various fxes on their bass boat and
especially the trolling motor.
Chris McCall and Clayton Boulware took third with 17.11 lbs. Boulware said that they fshed mid-
lake using a Rat-L-Trap, [it was] a slow day, the frst keeper came around 10 a.m. and at about 1
p.m. we caught about a six and a half pounder and fve pounder in back to back casts. Boulware and
McCall are sponsored by H&H Rods, Mercury, Nitro Motor Guide, Dusty Roads Marine, Stanley Jigs,
Strike King, Bass Pro, Legend, Evinrude, Sam Rayburn Tackle Monkey, Gambler, Santone, and Tour
Star Rods.
A total of 112 fsh were weighed in at the tournament averaging 2.74 lbs per fsh and a total
weight of 307.12 lbs. The next Big Thicket Division Team Tournament will be on February 26 on

Now is best time of year to aggressively control wild pigs
Agrilife Extension specialist: Hungry hogs more careless
From now until spring green-up is one of the best times of the year to control wild pigs, according
to a Texas AgriLife Extension Service expert.One factor is that hungry wild pigs are on the move and
more likely to be out in the open to forage for food this time of year, said Dr. Billy Higginbotham,
AgriLife Extension fsheries and wildlife specialist, Overton.
Wild pigs, aka feral hogs, browse wooded areas, graze pastures and root up planted crops for food,
Higginbotham said. They also scavenge and raid deer-feeder sites. From January through spring
green-up, many of these food sources are not as available.
Native foods such as acorns disappear as winter wears on, and many deer hunters do not continue
to supplement their deer population after hunting season, Higginbotham said. As a result, the wild
pigs will be increasingly on the move and more susceptible to baiting as they search for food.
Another reason to step up control efforts of wild pigs this time of year has to do with the animals
breeding behavior, he said.
Wild pigs are one of the most prolifc large mammals in the world, Higginbotham said.
According to a 2011 study, the average age of a sow having her frst litter is about 13 months, he
said. Mature sows will have an average of 1.5 litters per year, and the average litter size is 5.6 piglets.
Though sows can have litters any month of the year, there always seems to be a peak in farrowing
during the early spring, Higginbotham said. This is an added incentive for landowners to strike as
soon as possible before even more pigs hit the ground.
Landowners have the choice of several control methods for wild pigs. These include trapping,
snaring, dogging and shooting, both aerially and on the ground, he said. But because of the large
amount of cover afforded by forest and brush in many parts of Texas, trapping and shooting remain
the most effective options for landowners in such areas.
A 2011 survey of 700 landowners in 139 Texas counties by AgriLife Extension detailed the
frequency of control method utilized, Higginbotham said. Of 36,664 wild pigs removed in 2010
by survey respondents, 57 percent were removed through trapping and 24 percent via aerial and
landowner shooting. Hunting was responsible for removing another 11 percent of the pigs taken.
Catch dogs removed 6 percent of the total while 2 percent were removed through the use of snares.

Though design is important, theres more to successfully controlling hogs than just buying or building
a good trap, he said.
Trapping is a process -- not an event, Higginbotham said. That process includes training the
pigs to bait, determining the size of trap based on the size of the sounder (family group), training the
pigs to become accustomed to the traps presence and to regularly enter the trap with the gate secured
open. Then and only then should the trap be set to actually catch the pigs.
Higginbotham noted that the most diffcult pig to trap is one that has been almost caught, but
got away because of poor trap design or planning. Mature pigs, especially boars, also learn to be wary
of traps when they see other members of their sounder are caught. So its important to catch as many
as possible with one setting of the trap.
He also recommended using a remote-sensing camera, available from sporting-good
retailers, to determine the size and feeding habits of pigs before constructing the trap. The cameras
are designed to operate automatically at suspected pig haunts. They are tripped by motion detectors
with pig activity and take digital photos, marking the time in the process. Setting these cameras and
interpreting the results are also outlined on the wild pig control website, he said.
Landowners remain the frst line of defense because Texas is 95 percent privately owned land,
Higginbotham said. We are not going to eradicate wild pig populations with the current legal
control methods, but research has clearly demonstrated that the economic impact wild pigs have on
agricultural operations can be signifcantly reduced by the control methods we do have.

Matsubu & Davidson win Bass N Bucks
Toledo Bend kick-off with over 26 pounds
The Bass N Bucks Toledo Series kicked off with a bang January 28, 2012 at Cypress Bend Marina. Seven
sacks over 20 pounds were registered at the scales, with Brandon Davidson and Ben Matsubu taking the
win with their 26.24 pound sack. Four separate 8 lb bass were brought in making it an exciting day.
It was a cold, breezy morning as the teams trailered to their various launching places on Toledo
Bend. Recent rains boosted lake levels to above the 163 mark, less than 8 below normal pool. The
newly renovated boat lanes that the Sabine River Authority have been cutting to lower lake levels, over
50 miles of main boat lanes, came in handy for the contending teams for safer navigation.
As the frst teams came in to register their catch, it appeared that it must have been a tough day
with limits only weighing 10 pounds. It didnt take long before bigger catches starting coming in,
continuously changing the leaderboard.
Larry Peacher & Larry Stockwell were the frst to bring a 20+ pound limit totaling 22.85 lbs.
The lead was taken over by Mike Cortelloni & Wendell Wright when they brought in their 24.89 lb
limit. Finally, the biggest weight of the day came to the scales caught by Ben Matsubu and Brandon
Davidson with a 26.24 lb sack.
When Matsubu and Davidson came to the scales, the battle for Big Bass was already on with several
8 pounders weighed in. An 8.08 lbr was in the lead for the Big Bass race until they put their biggest on
the scales weighing 8.58 lbs. Then, putting their other four with it, they took the lead and ultimate win
with a 26.24 lb total.
Matsubu gave his partner Brandon many kudos for the day. Brandon had a limit in the boat with
his frst 10 casts. It was a small limit, about 12 pounds, but a limit none the less. He was using a DD-
22 initially, but after the frst fve bass were put in the livewell, they switched to Talon football head
jigs with a Gary Yamamoto trailer. Thats when we caught the big one. They were situated at a little
point with some grass and lay-downs in 12-15 of water. Once they made their initial cull with the Big
Bass of the day, they continued to upgrade their creel to a 26.24 lb fnish. We caught a few with drop
shots, but most of the ones we weighed in were caught on the jig. Bass N Bucks presented them with a
check for $5,000 for their 1st place fnish, and another $1,000 check for the Big Bass of the day. They
would like to thank Yamamoto Custom Lures, Talon Baits, Mid Lake Kampground, Legend Boats and
Phoenix Jigs for their support.

off, and just continued all day. We
probably caught 12 or 13 keepers, two
or three an hour. Their weight totaled
24.89 lbs for a 2nd place fnish. Bass N
Bucks awarded the team $2,500. They

We caught our three biggest ones back to back in three casts. Peacher caught their kicker weighing in at 6.56 lbs. They made one cull at
2:00 to their fnal weight. The team received $1,600 for their 3rd place win.

Marina on February 25th. The March 17 and April 14 events

Natural Acid Seeps
and Fish Kills
On January 24th of this year Texas Parks and Wildlife investigated a large fsh kill on Toledo Bend
that was reported by an alert fsherman from Louisiana. The site of the kill was at Tuckers Lake on the
northern end of Toledo Bend. The kill was fairly large with at least 5,000 dead fsh present. More disturbing
was that the fsh observed were of good size. It is quite possible that smaller fsh also died but decomposed
or were scavenged. The kill consisted primarily of spotted gar, blue catfsh, longnose gar, common carp,
channel catfsh, smallmouth buffalo, fathead catfsh, largemouth bass, and alligator gar in order of
number of dead fsh observed. There were many blue catfsh seen that were in excess of 30 lbs and the largest
fsh found was an alligator gar about 6-7 in length. It was estimated the kill was about a week old, although
TPWD did investigate the kill less than 24 hours after being notifed. The question at this point was what
caused this fsh kill?
The fsh kill consisted of individuals from different species and families of fsh. The kill also appeared to
have happened over a very short amount of time. There were no visual sores on the fsh. These observations
almost immediately ruled out that a disease was the cause. The area that these fsh died was pretty shallow
(an airboat was needed to access them) and there was quite a bit of terrestrial vegetation in the water that
had grown up during this years drought. Low dissolved oxygen may have been a culprit, but oxygen levels
were quite high even with the decaying fsh present. The next logical step was to look for an industrial
accident that may had caused this. There is a considerable amount of gas drilling in the area and a spill was
possible. Satellite photographs of the area however did not show any gas drilling pads near creeks feeding
into the area of the kill. There were no reports of fsh kills in the streams up above the kill site.
Texas Parks and Wildlife has several biologists whose sole responsibility is to investigate fsh kills and
they were consulted and led the investigation. In the last six months they have investigated fve different fsh
kills where natural acid seeps were determined to be the culprit. Fish require an optimal water pH (acidic
/ basic) in order to survive. At this particular kill site the waters pH was very low (acidic). Unfortunately
Mother Nature can be quite brutal and she was in this case. A natural phenomenon known as an acid seep
killed these fsh. In fact it is fairly common for this to happen, especially in drought conditions.
This fsh kill was set-up to happen over 35 million years ago. Peat was formed by decaying vegetation and
back then the Gulf of Mexico was much further inland than it is today, where sea water mixed with this peat.
Sea water has a considerable amount of sulfate which can be generated into sulfuric acid under the right
conditions. The sulfuric acid naturally seeps out of the ground and into streams and is basically a part of the
world we live in. However, when there is adequate water fow, primarily from rainfall the acid is diluted and
its effects are not as consequential as to cause large scale fsh kills. In this case the base fow was not great
enough to offset the sulfuric acid that lowered the waters pH. In the end we got our rain a little too late.
Hopefully the current rains will continue and these types of things will be kept to a minimum.

Jason Bonds pulled ahead of the pack to
win Bass N Bucks Rayburn Series
Nearly 100 teams of brave anglers merged on Sam Rayburn for the third of fve Bass N Bucks
Rayburn Series events February 4, 2012. In a phenomenal weigh in where TWO sacks over 26
pounds were registered, lone angler Jason Bonds pulled ahead of the pack to win.
Rain had been in the forecast to hit the region all week on tournament day. In checking the
timing of when it hit Sam Rayburn the night before the tournament, it was to be mid day Saturday
when it came in. Sometime during the night, the front had picked up speed and arrived before
the tournament began. A minimum of 1 of rain, with 3-5 in some areas ensued. Tournament
offcials began calling participants to tell them to trailer to ramps closer to their fshing areas.
Drenched and tired, the frst teams began trickling in to the weigh in line. John Frasier and Chuck
Salter took the initial lead with their 18.82 lb sack. Several other good sacks followed then, Chance
and Brandon Mouton came in with their 24.78 lb sack and took over the lead. More 20 lb class sacks
were registered then Brian Branum & Keith White took over with 26.37 lbs, which included the Big
Bass lead at 8.02 lbs. The clock was ticking, and the scales would close at 4:00. It looked as though
Branum and White would win the tournament until Jason Bonds came to the scales with 26.79 lbs,
barely nosing into the winning spot. Soon after, Larry Cotton & Ricky Guy brought in the Big Bass of
the tournament, just an ounce over Branum & Whites, registering a weight of 8.19 lbs.
Jason Bonds had to go it alone this event, his partner Todd Castledine was engaged in another
event. Im glad they decided to let us trailer today, Bonds began. Chuckling that he tried to stay
dry, there was no way anyone could on this day. I had found some fsh in practice, so I went back
to that spot and Power Poled down. Using a Strike Pro Flapjack in a new color coming out, he
targeted a main lake grassy point in 6-8 of water. I caught three good fsh in that frst spot, then moved
on to fnd other good quality bass. Estimating catching 30-40 keepers throughout the day, I made my
last cull around 1:30, exchanging a 4 pounder for a 7.24 pounder. Using a Hydrowave to help provoke
the bass to bite, the Hydrowave really
played a big part in my day. His last cull, increasing his weight by 3 pounds, made the difference between
a 1st and 3rd place fnish. Bass N Bucks presented him with the guaranteed 1st place check for $8,000.
He also won the Cabelas bonus to add to his winnings. He would like to thank Strike Pro Lures, Legend

Brian Branum & Keith White nearly held on to 1st place,
narrowly falling to 2nd with 26.37 lbs. Using a Santone 5H M
Series jig, Brian landed their kicker with his frst cast of the day
weighing 8.02 lbs. We were using a green pumpkin jig, trailered
with a Gambler Flappy Daddy also in green pumpkin. We were at
a really long point that dropped out to 10 deep. The rain didnt
bother them, nor the wind too much. However, the lightening
was pretty bad and there was lots of it there for a while. They
fshed two other similar points, none of which had any grass.
We ran into some schoolies, but they were all pretty small.
Continuing to improve their creel throughout the day, Keith
made their fnal cull in his next to last cast, landing a 7 pounder.
Branum designed the new lure with Matt Herrin, and promised
they will be in stores soon. The team received the 2nd place
guaranteed check for $4,000 and would like to thank Santone,
Gambler, Fun N Sun, Skeeter, R1-Bass and The Tackle Monkey.
Brothers Chance and Brandon Moton won 3rd place with
24.78 lbs. We caught most of our weigh fsh early, by 9am. They
fshed in the back of a pocket, and stayed in that spot all day.
There was grass in about 6 to 8 of water. Our morning fsh were
all caught on a rattle trap, but we culled our last two pounder at
2:15. Thats when we caught our 7.38 lb kicker with a jig. That
was a decisive cull for the duo, increasing their weight by more
than fve pounds. They received the last guaranteed check for
$3,000.
Larry Cotten caught the biggest bass of the day weighing
8.19 lbs, fshing with partner Ricky Guy. It was around 1:00, and
we already had a limit in the boat. They were fshing a grassy ditch around 4 deep with a Rayburn Red
rattle trap. That gave us our last cull of the day, exchanging a two pounder for it. The team received
$1,000 for their Big Bass catch, which anchored their 4th place overall win for an additional $490.
Tommy Rascoe and Alton Powell were the frst team out of the money line. They received two Lews
Reels, two tackle bags, and a Strike Pro assortment of baits.
The Bass N Bucks staff and crew did a lot of maneuvering this event to accommodate participating
anglers. First, due to the massive rain hitting Sam Rayburn six hours before it was originally
forecast, starting at 5am calls were made to each team to let them know they could trailer closer
to their chosen fshing areas for safety. Then, to pay more teams more money, an additional 5.26%
was added to the payback percentage, putting it over 80% payback to the feld. We realize that the
inclement weather and resulting massive rain kept a lot of our teams off the water. The frst three
places in every Sam Rayburn event are guaranteed. We wanted to do our best to put more money
in the remaining top teams pockets as we could, so we added even more to our normal payback
percentage for them. The more teams that fsh, the more money is paid back!

COLD WEATHER FISHING AND PHYSICAL ISSUES

Dealing With Cold Weather
In my fshing career, I have fshed a
massive amount of time during the coldest
days of the year which usually occurs locally
in December, January and February. Staying
warm is normally not an issue for me as I
am not one where the cold bothers me plus I
have the best cold-weather gear on the market
since it is a necessity. However, through the
years, I have observed physical symptoms in
the winter which are not an issues for me
during the warmer times of the year. Those two
symptoms have been a slight, dull headache
and increased neck and leg cramps as well as
fatigue while fshing. The cramps really got to
be an issue even during the day but especially
at night.
Like most men do, I let it go without even
giving it a second thought until the cramps
really got so bad they would wake me up
numerous times at night. One day I had them
in the boat so badly I could hardly move my
neck for 30 minutes and had to sit down till the
muscle relaxed. I just thought it was the cold
weather causing it. I decided to Google leg and
neck cramps and found out one of the major
causes of such cramps was dehydration. I also
found out that you do not always feel thirsty
to be dehydrated plus also realizing that I was
drinking almost no water while on the lake in
the winter months. I was drinking 2-3 mugs
of coffee (5-6 cups) each morning and that
much caffeine was not helping the dehydration
issues either. In my research, I also found that
it is very important to drink water in the early
part of the fshing/work day and not wait until
your body is lacking in fuids as it takes a while
to catch up. In the summer months I would
always consume bottled water plus Gator Ade.
Consumption of water also helps with
maintaining energy. I even found that a lack of
fuids was also causing my dull headache. Case
solved! Since I have greatly increased my water
intake during winter fshing trips, 90% of my
cramps are gone, I have more energy and
no dull headaches. One of the doctors in this
research study stated that possibly 75% of the
population is under-hydrated and also stressed
the importance of children getting enough
water as dehydration in children can be very
serious since they have minimum reserve.
Guess most of us need more water so my boat
cooler is usually loaded with bottle water. I
now try to drink 12 ozs before I get in my boat
and 24 ozs while on the water.
TOLEDO AT HIGHEST LEVEL IN A YEAR
My favorite fshing hole continues to make
progress and is at the highest level in over a
year. Although some cold fronts are dry fronts,
most this winter have been rain producers and
we are over 5 feet up from the bottom level
which was reached mid-November 2011 with
a historic low of 159.7 msl (mean seal level).
That was a tough pill to swallow. Actually,
there was barely enough water to swallow
a pill much less launch a boat most places.
Actually, for months we had the best boat
launch on the entire lake in my back yard,
Texas SRA #7 off of Highway #255 just above
the dam. There was a time last fall where only
7 public boat launches were usable and most
of those were a challenge. However, currently
numerous launches are back open and by the
time this is published we should be looking at
a 165 msl (or higher) reading. When you have
been used to running the lake at 160 then 165
is a cake walk!! One thing about the fshing the
past several months, it has been outstanding,
as in fantastic! My guide bookings are excellent
for this spring and boat and vehicle traffc
are noticeably up over last spring and fall.
Hopefully, we have the worst behind us. We
have really been getting some wet, slow-moving
weather systems that have been responsible for
some substantial rainfall. Thank You God!

Robinsons Open 2012
with a WIN!!!
Season openers are always flled with excitement, apprehension,
and expectation. After all, everyone is starting from the same
position; frst! Tournament registration starts with meeting the
directors, new couples, former couples, and then heading to the
ramp. All of this leading up to launching, making the run to your
starting spot, then making the frst cast of the year. As all of this
happens youre still in First Place! Now someone just needs to tell
the fsh; we want to be in frst place when the tournament is over.
Donnie & Juanita Robinson found the right fsh to maintain
their frst place standing throughout the day! With a respectable
fve fsh limit weighing 18.07 lbs. Despite the low water, extensive
stump felds, along with sandbars everywhere, Donnie & Juanita
worked their magic in a known community hole to catch their fsh.
They also caught a nice bass weighing 5.41 lbs. to take home the
Big Bass for the event. Donnie said he didnt remember who caught
the big fsh so, that means Juanita caught it!! Congratulations on a
great start to the year guys!!!
When youre new to an organization, competing for the frst
time, you want to win. Coming in second is alright, still fun, and
everyone is happy for you. Jeff Bunch & Tara Mesora fnished
in second in their frst ever C.A.S.T. Southeast tournament with
14.63 lbs. All of their fsh were almost identical in size making a
good stringer just short that one nice kicker to put them over the
top. Congratulations Jeff & Tara!! Welcome to C.A.S.T. Southeast!
Larry & Joyce Coleman fnished the tournament in third place!
Having fshed in a tournament the weekend prior where they
fnished third also, the Colemans are nothing less than consistent.
Bringing a limit of bass weighing 14.13 lbs. showed just how
consistent they are. Good Job, Larry & Joyce!
Finishing the tournament in fourth place were highly successful
anglers Dean Perkins & Debbie Peden with 12.72 lbs. Dean &
Debbie have fshed many C.A.S.T. tournaments and are always
contenders for winning. Great Job guys!
Now that we are all not in frst place, its time to begin the
competition. C.A.S.T.
Southeast will hold its second tournament of 2012, Saturday,
February 11th, from Cassel-Boykin Park. Registration will be
tournament morning at Lakeview Motel on Hwy 147 at 5:00 am.
We look forward to seeing everyone who fshed the opener and all
the couples who were unable to make it.

The Louisiana pine snake (hereafter pine snake) is considered
one of the rarest snakes in United States and one of the rarest
vertebrates (animals with a back bone) in North America.
Currently this animal is a candidate for listing as an endangered
species under the endangered species act. Even an animal this rare
can be seen in the lakes area.
The pine snake is a large non-venomous constrictor with a
smaller than normal head. The head is pointed making movement
underground easier, where it spends much of its time. Adults
are 4 to 5 feet in length, and have rather bland coloration. The
underside is yellow to tan and the top has dark blotches that
change from head to tail. The blotches at the head are very washed
out and the blotches towards the tail become more defned.
They depend on open longleaf pine forests with sandy loose
soils dominated by grassy ground cover. This type of habitat
is also conducive for their primary food source, Bairds pocket
gopher. This sandy soil makes it easier for animals to burrow
into the ground. The pine snake is active during the day, but
spends most of the time (60% or more) underground in burrows
of various animals. These burrows and holes play an important
role in protecting the pine snake from the frequent fre needed to
maintain these longleaf forests.
Reproduction in pine snakes is slow and delayed. Pine snakes
can live for up to 30 years in captivity (less in the wild), but dont
reach sexual maturity until 3 years of age. Unfortunately they do
not reproduce later in life. They will normally produce a clutch
of 4 eggs. The unusual thing about their reproduction is that they
produce the largest eggs (5 long and 2 wide) and hatchlings
(18-22) in the US.
Pine snakes were rare when discovered and have become
even rarer as the years have gone by. They were once found in 9
Louisiana parishes and 14 Texas Counties. There are currently
confrmed sightings in 3 Texas counties (possibly a fourth) and
5 Louisiana parishes. Since 1929 there are only 250 documented
specimens in museums and scientifc collections. Exact population
numbers are not known at this time, but trend information from
incidental sightings and trapping show a downward decline. Pine
snakes are diffcult to survey due to the fact that there are very few
animals and their unusual movement patterns.
No single effort will save the pine snake, but focus is placed on
ensuring adequate habitat is available. Recovery efforts have taken
many forms. Two of the largest are discussed below.
A petition to get the Louisiana pine snake listed as an
endangered species under the endangered species act has been
undertaken by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Currently it is
just protected by Louisiana and Texas law. If it gets listed this will
provide more protection and stiffer penalties for those who break
the law. Listing can open up new funding sources to put more
habitat conservation and restoration on the ground.
Cost share programs have been started with the Natural
Resource Conservation Service that provides individual
landowners the ability to conduct restoration work on their
property. These programs vary as to what work can be done, but
focus primarily on restoring longleaf pine habitat, getting rid
of exotic species, and promoting sound agricultural practices.
Landowners work with professionals with various agencies to
develop a project. These programs, once approved, normally cover
at least 50% of management activities.
The Louisiana pine snake is an interesting feature of the classic
East Texas mature pine forest. Unlike many other endangered
species efforts are currently under way to save this unique species,
and in addition management can beneft a whole host of other
well known animals depending on this type of habitat including
bobwhite quail, eastern wild turkey, Henslows sparrow, and red-
cockaded woodpecker. For more information contact your local

Patriots Challenge Kickoff 2012
with Three January Bass Tournaments
Jackson Hill Marina hosted their frst Patriots Challenge Bass Fishing Tournaments of 2012 on January 14th,
21st and 28th. In typical Texas fashion the weather ranged from Winter to Spring. Ed Harris and Perry Curry
fought the strong wind and cold to fnish in frst place on the January 14th kickoff with a 13.46 lb sack of 4 fsh
including a 4.20 lb big fsh. Lipless crank baits worked early but weather conditions kept the feld searching for
fsh with less than ideal conditions for the entire day.
The January 21st tournament was held under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60s and once again the
trap bite was on along with Carolina rigged plastics, however Keith Keele and his partner Micah Griffth caught
the majority of their winning 21.79 lb limit and their 7.0 lb big fsh on swim baits in 8 to 10 fet of water. The wind
was not a factor and allowed for a more comfortable day of fshing for everyone. Keele and Griffth reported that
they stayed north of the 147 bridge and caught their fsh by midmorning just a few miles from Jackson Hill.
January 28th started with similar conditions however, the wind started to blow and kept some teams from
fshing their favorite holes. William Flournoy and young Andrew YBarbo held off the rest of the feld with a
winning total of 16.10 lbs. Andrew caught the big fsh with a 5.87 lb chunk on a rattle trap. The team reported
fnding some good quality fsh but the wind made it diffcult for them all day.
The next Patriots Challenge will be held on February 25th and with rising water levels and water temperatures
the spawn should be on and with it the possibilities of some giant Rayburn bass. Everyone is welcome to
come out and fsh the Patriots Challenge where you have a chance to win some money, have some fun and
contribute to the Outdoor Freedom Network and Wounded Warrior Association of East Texas. 100% of the
tournament proft goes to providing fshing and hunting opportunities and to help with utility bill payments for

Daylilies are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns
including eyes, watermarks and edges. They come in many different
forms. Other than the large fowers, there are miniatures, spiders
and doubles. Daylilies are one of the easiest fowers to grow when
you provide them with the conditions in which they thrive. They are
drought tolerant once established and require minimal care.
Daylilies should be planted in a location with at least fve hours
of sun a day. Soil should be well drained. Roots need oxygen to be
healthy. Excessive moisture for extended periods will drown the
plants and promote the growth of fungus that can destroy the root
system. Raised beds may be used to improve drainage. Try to buy
from nurseries that are close to your growing zone. The plants will
be more acclimated to your climate.
To choose from the many cultivars, one must know the attributes
that determine a superior daylily. Flower stalks, called scapes,
should be straight and sturdy enough to remain upright. Blossoms
wont be pretty when they are lying in the dirt. Choose a plant with
a nice bud count. Newer varieties can easily have more than twenty
fowers per scape. Petals should have substance. If they are too thin,
the fower will lose its color quickly in the sun.
Although the original daylilies only bloomed once a season,
many of todays hybrid daylilies are re-bloomers. One fan can
produce several scapes with multiple blossoms. Individual plants are
called fans due to their resemblance to an old-fashioned hand fan.
A vibrant plant should multiply rapidly. When the clump becomes
too large, the fans of the plant should be divided (every 3 6 years,
depending on which website you consult, and hence the popular
title of pass-along plant). Daylilies will not bloom as well if they
compete with each other for the moisture and nutrients in the soil.
Foliage should be clipped in an inverted V-shape about four to
six inches tall when the plants are moved. This allows the plant to
grow new roots without the stress of keeping all the foliage alive.
Plants do best when moved in the fall. Any broken or damaged roots
should be removed.
After choosing an adequate site, fertilizer and cottonseed meal
can be worked into the soil before planting. Organic matter can
also be used to improve composition of the soil. An all-purpose
fertilizer such as triple thirteen may be used in the spring
after the last frost, usually by the end of March and again in the fall
by mid-October.
Several pests frequent daylilies. Aphids usually attack the new
growth in the center of the plant. They cause damage to the foliage
and spread diseases. Spider mites are normally on the underside of
the leaves. You can see the webbing on the infested plant. They can
cause severe yellowing of the clumps. If you shake the leaves over
a white piece of paper, you can easily see the spider mites moving.
Thrips are small fying insects that damage the buds and fowers.
You can see them better on darker fowers. Birds will peck holes in
the petals trying to eat thrips.
Daylilies may develop fungus such as rust or crown rot. Rust
causes orange pustules on the foliage. Airborne spores are spread
throughout the area by wind. This disease, though unsightly, will
seldom be lethal. The crown is the area of the plant where the roots
and the foliage are connected. Crown rot can be fatal to an entire
clump of daylilies. The leaves will begin to turn yellow and are
easily detached from the plant. This disease can be recognized by a
foul odor in the crown and roots. When using chemicals to combat
plant problem, be sure to follow the directions carefully and use all
recommended safety equipment.
Be sure whatever you decide to grow in your garden that you
can identify your plants. Learn the conditions that they require not
only to survive but, to fourish. Do they need sun or shade? What are
their tolerances for moisture? Types of soil have infuences on the
health of your plants.
In order to be successful at gardening, knowledge is power.
There are no green thumbs. Your plants will reward you for keeping
them happy.

Dear Bass-N-Bucks Anglers,
Recently, USA Bass Trails LLC, which owns the Bud
Light Trail (BLT) tournament program, has purchased the
controlling interest in the Bass-N-Bucks (BnB) program.
By combining the two programs, we will be able to offer
the anglers better payouts and more championship
tournament opportunities. We wanted to highlight some
key changes in the 2012 BnB program versus the 2011
program.
Recent changes to the Bass-N-Bucks program:
The top 50% in Year-to-date (YTD) point rankings
and or any team that enters 4 of the 5 Rayburn or Toledo
Division tournaments will qualify BnB anglers to enter 5
BLT/BnB Region Championships. This is an increase
from one BnB championship tournament opportunity
in 2011 to fve championship tournament
opportunities in 2012. Instead of just having one chance
to win the grand prize, the BNB anglers will now have fve
chances at the championship prizes.
The 2012 Toledo Bend championship will be
exclusive for the BnB Rayburn and Toledo anglers.
Only BnB anglers can qualify for the Toledo championship
tournament, where a Legend Alpha 191 with a 200 HP
Mercury Opti Max will be the frst place prize ($45,000
value). The top 50% in YTD rankings and any team that
entered 4 of the 5 BnB Division tournaments in either the
BnB Rayburn or Toledo Divisions will qualify anglers to
enter a BnB Toledo Championship.
The BnB cash payouts will be raised from 75%
to 80% at the ramp effective February 25, 2012. We
will visit with Rayburn anglers at every tournament about
whether they want guaranteed payouts or percentage
payouts based on the number of entries. A survey will be
taken from the anglers to express their wishes and make
comments.
The 2012 BnB program will begin offering
sponsor products equal to the value of 5% of the
collected entry fees at all remaining BnB Rayburn
and Toledo Division Tournaments. This is in addition
to the 80% cash payouts. The sponsor products will range
from Navionics Chips / $150 value to V&M Gift Certifcates
/ $100 value, Lews rods and or reels, etc.
The BnB program will set aside 10% of all
collected entry fees at all BnB tournaments for the
purchase of the Rayburn and Toledo Championship
boats. Note: The angler payout for all remaining BnB
Division tournaments will be 85% cash and prizes, with
10% of entry fees going toward the purchase of the
Championship boats. Thats a 95% payback on entry
fees.
The BLT and BnB tournament programs pass on
100% of all sponsor products and/or money to
the anglers. The sponsor money allows the BLT and
BnB programs to give away four Legend Alpha 191
boats with 200 HP Mercury motors, valued at $45,000
each ($180,000 for all four boats), to the winners in
three of the BLT/BnB Championships. In addition,
the BLT program offers a $10,000 guarantee to the
winners in three other Championship tournaments
that BnB anglers are now eligible to qualify for.
Note: The mix of sponsors money, along with the
entry fees, creates an exceptional value for the teams that
qualify for the BLT/BnB Championships. This allows any
team that fshes in the BLT or BnB tournament programs
the opportunity to win TWO $45,000 boats in the BLT/
BnB Grand Championship. This is on top of the 1st place
guaranteed $10,000 cash and $45,000 Legend Boats
offered in the Region Championships!

Almost 11 lb lead won the 2011
V & M Championship

The V&M/Cyclone Tournament Trail held their 2011 Championship at Big Bass Marina on January
21st & 22nd, 2012. It had been postponed from their original date due to low lake levels and dangerous
navigation situations. There was over $50,000 in cash and prizes up for grab!
Just as expected this time of year, the weather was chilly and breezy on day 1. Day 2 was still chilly but
was quite windy, adding even more challenge to the anglers. Many took advantage of the opportunity to
trailer and be closer to their fshing hole.
Tommy Rasco and Alton Powell ended day 1 in the lead with 23.72 lbs which included a whopping
9.14 pounder. This fsh ended up being the big bass of the tournament. There were 3 more bags over the
20 pound mark. Jerry Siscot and Mike Cortelloni had 20.79 lbs. Danny Iles fshed without his partner
Brian Shook who was at another event, Danny had 20.40 lbs. Father & son anglers, Dave & Derek Mong
had a bag of fsh that weighed 20.36 lbs.
Day 1 leaders, Rasco & Powell brought in 14.79 lbs. on day 2 this put them in 2nd with a total weight
of 38.51 lbs. Glen Freeman & Harold Allen brought in another strong limit of 18.76 lbs. placing them in
3rd with a total of 38.42 lbs. Ben Matsubu, who fshed by himself both days, added 21.70 lbs to his frst
day weight of 16.01 lbs., making his total weight 37.71 lbs. which put him 4th place.
Danny Iles had his partner Brian Shook with him on day 2 and apparently this made a difference.
These two young anglers brought in an impressive limit of 28.90 lbs which added to day 1 weight of 20.40
lbs. made their 2 day weight 49.30 lbs. They topped the feld by almost an 11 pound lead! The anglers
opted for the $15,000 cash prize instead of the 1st place prize which was a brand new Skeeter boat
powered by Yamaha.
Congratulations to Bill Rogers and Ray Livingston for winning Anglers of the Year in the Rayburn
division. The Toledo division Anglers of the Year are Glen Freeman and Harold Allen. Freeman & Allen
dominated the circuit this year, winning 4 out of 5 tournaments and came in 2nd in the 5th tournament.

March 2012 and Spawning Bass are
what everyone is thinking about here
on Big Sam. First lets look at what is
different this year. Last year the lake was
low and we didnt receive our normal
rainfall in the winter months. This
year we have been getting some rain
bringing the lake back up. This means
you fnd some of the creeks and pockets
a little off color making sight fshing a
little harder. We have also seen some of
these pockets clear up in just a few days
making for some awesome sight fshing.
The male bass will be busy working on
fnding a spot to nest while the females
will be roaming around waiting for
the right moment to pick her partner.
Timing is everything, the best thing here
is get on the lake and stay on it. Fish
hard, hold on tight, and keep looking for
that Trophy Bass
The female will hang back in a little
deeper water till everything is just right
before shell move up and do her thing.
Then shell move back out and disappear.
When you fnd males in the shallow lots
of different baits will work. Senkos and
soft plastics come to mind, pitch them
into any opening you can fnd to get a
hit. There will be a lot of fsh scattered
over the grass fats and a Strike Pro
Flap Jack Lipless crankbait or Stanley
Spinner bait comes to mind here. Try
working one over the grass edges around
the points and pockets. There are a lot of
big fsh that move up this time of year so
be ready. Remember these fsh are in the
spawn. If you can, please, practice catch
and release. We need them to get back
to the nest to fnish what they started.
This will insure the future of fshing for
everyone.
Sometimes there are a few large
Crappie in the grass. Remember if your
bait hangs in the grass, you rip it free,
then you get hung again, sometimes its
one of the larger Crappie. Before you rip
it free AGAIN put a little pressure on the
rod and try to feel if anything is there. I
have caught some great big Crappie this
time of year and theyre good eating.
Crappie will be moving into the grass
to spawn also. Weve had some pretty
good days fshing, sitting back and
enjoying the peace and quiet. The other
bonus was catching some great fsh. We
do have a new pontoon that can handle
up to 8 anglers for fshing with family
and friends.

Spring is here and we have been
getting much needed rains that are
bringing the lake up. February was a
little off & on depending on if you were
fshing before or after a front.
March is on track to be a great fshing
month. Dont forget that the full moon is
March the 7th. That should be a magical
week for Sam Rayburn. All of your
lipless crankbaits will be working very
well along with the square bill models in
1.5 and 2.5 sizes. Colors that are doing
well are Blue Gill and Chile Craw. Shad
colored Swim Jigs are doing very well
also. These can be used in 2 to 6 ft. of
water for those bass cruising looking for
spawning areas.
Look for bedding fsh in the coves
protected from the north wind. They
should be easier to see because they cant
hide in the buck brush. Your Lizards and
creature baits will work well.
The Umbrella rig (or Alabama Rig),
like it or not, is making an impact on
fshing. While talking to Robin Johnston
at Needmore Tackle she said they had 3
different brands to choose from. Stop by
and see whats new.
Crappie are moving up in the grass in
about 6 to 10 foot of water. Roadrunner
heads with black body and chartreuse
tail are working very well. Using this
method, you will cover a lot of water.
When you do fnd them there will be
several in that area.
Catfsh will be moving in the shallows
as well and can be caught on noodles.
Everyone try to get out and enjoy the
outdoors and bring a youngster along.

Chris Hazel and Josh Peek win on
Toledo Bend in wind and cold
The frst tournament of the Bud Light Trail
Rayburn/Toledo Spring Series was held on Feb.
11 at Big Bass Marina in Many, Louisiana. The
day was cold and windy, but 25 teams pulled
through and made it to weigh in where the sun
and restaurant onsite provided a retreat from
the chilly temps. Chris Hazel and Josh Peek took
home frst place with their 25.03 lb limit and
also had the Big Bass of the day which was a nice
8.01 pounder.
Hazel and Peek were reluctant to give up their
secrets, but did say that they fshed mid-lake
points and fats, it was tough, we had to fght
the wind all day, they said. They fshed with
crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps, and jigs. Hazel and Peek
said that they had their biggest fsh at 7:30 am
that morning as well as a limit of fve fsh then;
but culled throughout the day until weigh in.
Coming in second was Larry Byrd and Dave
Bushnell. Byrd said that they were fshing, 12-
20 feet of water with Oldham jigs, Rage Craw
worms, Hard Tackle Rods, Shimano Reels, and
lots of Seaguar line. He said, when we found
them, they were fast and furious, like balls of
fsh, just lots of themif we were in the wind we
were catching, but couldnt catch anything out of
itit was really a fun, great day. Other sponsors

Third was rounded out by Rodney Cormier

jigs. [we] stayed in the wind all day, we culled
probably over 40 fshwe caught [fsh] all
throughout the day.

Bend / Rayburn Spring Team Division will

Jerkbaits Can Be Dynamite
A jerkbait can be one of the most productive lures
to have tied on your fshing line as early season bass
start their migration towards the back of creeks to
spawn. These baits are somewhat long and slender,
and when pulled through the water they have a very
erratic action.
During late winter and early spring most of you
have seen shad that are stunned or even killed by
the cold water. Many of these shad will make a short
burst and then either suspend or slowly sink. These
are an easy meal for bass, and that action is what a
jerkbait is designed to imitate. A jerkbait can fll a
livewell fast so lets zero-in on how to use them.
For purposes of this article I am only going to
refer to hard jerkbaits that are designed to be fshed
from the surface down to around 10-feet of water.
It takes some time and patience to be a really good
jerkbait fshermen but I assure you that it is time
well spent.
In the early Eighties, a number of fshing
magazines touted suspending jerkbaits as the
secret baits of the pros. Later I remember visiting
with pro angler Larry Nixon at one of the boat
shows and he was actually one of the frst to tell
anglers how really great this bait could be in the
early spring. He commented that at this time of the
year many bass suspend in the water column and
would aggressively take a minnow-type bait when a
bottom-bumping lure wouldnt get a sniff.
Early bait companies made very few suspending
jerkbaits so you basically had to make your own.
This was done by drilling strategically-placed holes
in whatever baits that were available. Lead was then
added in the holes (or lead tape added to the hooks)
and the process could be quite lengthy before you
got the bait to perform properly. Achieving neutral
buoyancy in the bait was very diffcult and I am
sure that many of the proto-type baits wound up
in the trash can. Today it is much easier because
there are many quality jerkbaits on the market.
My friend Brian Snowden is a professional angler
that fshes the jerkbait quite a bit. Brian spends
much of the year competing in two professional
tours, the Bass Master Elite Series and the
Professional Anglers Association.
Brian and his wife Megan have a home in Reeds
Springs, Missouri but he fshes in our part of the
world quite often. He has a B.S. degree in Fisheries
Management, is a 5 time Bassmaster Classic
Qualifer, Champion of the PAA Series and has over
12 top ten Elite series fnishes. He also recently won
the fourth annual Toyota Texas Bass Classic on Lake
Conroe so he knows his stuff. I asked Brian for a few
comments about this jerkbait fshing and here is
his response.
My favorite jerkbaits for fshing most conditions
would have to be the shallow billed Smithwick
Rogue for top, the MegaBass 110 for mid-depth
range and the Spro McStick for deeper water. I
prefer a Johnny Morris Signature Series reel coupled
with
a St. Croix Legend Tournament Jerkbait rod, and
stay with an 8- to 10-pound test line size to get the
maximum amount of action from my bait, states
Snowden.
Colors are certainly a personal thing, however,
I prefer the chrome/blue/orange, ghost minnow
and chartreuse/purple back patterns for most of my
fshing. At times I also like to add suspended dots
to make the lure more nose heavy and I usually
replace the standard factory hooks with #5 Owner
ST 36s, he adds.
Although the jerkbait will work year-round,
early spring is when it really shines. Water clarity is
critical when fshing a jerkbait since it is important
for the bass to see and zero-in on the bait. Snowden,
like many other pros, prefers working a jerkbait
when there is a sunny day and a slight breeze.
Although the name jerkbait implies that the
lure should be worked aggressively with hard jerks
of the rod tip, many anglers will tell you that many
times less is best, and that over-working the bait
can actually defeat much of the action.
Make your cast and then start with a soft jerk
with extended pauses, offers Snowden. The rod
tip should be pointed at the water and the key is to
fnd the cadence of the retrieve that the bass want
for that particular day. Sometimes it is a soft pull
and on other days it can be a series of hard jerks
with pauses in-between. How long you pause really
depends on the water temperature, clarity of the
water and the mood of the bass. I believe that the
colder the water the less you should jerk the bait
and the longer you should pause. And on some days
the bass want a steady jerking action with virtually
no pauses at all. The bass will let you know when
you fnd the right cadence. More often than not a
suspending jerkbait will get clobbered by bass when
the bait is simply hanging motionless in the water
column.
Keep in mind that the key to working the bait is
getting it to run at the depth the bass are holding,
states Snowden. Using a variety of baits that can
dive a bit deeper and then suspend at different
depths can also be very effective. As I mentioned
before, bass will suspend in the deeper water and if
those fsh can see the bait they will come up and hit
it. Bass want to eat as they prepare for the spawn but
the colder water has them moving at a somewhat
slower pace.
Many fsh will be foul-hooked on a jerkbait
because theyll swim up and just slap at the lure,
rather than grabbing it with their mouth. When you
get a strike simply reel down tight which will set the
small treble hooks, and then play the bass carefully
to the boat.
Snowden also offers, Some of these jerkbaits
have rattles and some are silent. Try both types.
You can cover lots of area with a jerkbait and that
is a tremendous plus for springtime fshing. You
will fnd that jerkbaits are like a number of other
crankbaits. Dont just buy one and think youre
going to set the world on fre. You need a variety of
baits that can work shallow and deep.

If you are looking for a technique that is sure to
add pounds to your weight and the end of the day
then my advice is to try a jerkbait. It is a winning
technique that many of the pros try to keep quiet.

February 11, 2012 - Anglers Quest 2012 Sam Rayburn Team Series # 2 out of The Umphrey Pavilion
at Sam Rayburn, TX began this event with 136 teamed anglers showing up to fsh for the $9045.00
purse. Any team entering 6 of the 8 Sam Rayburn Team Series events will automatically qualify for
the 2-day Rayburn Championship. The top team in points after all 8 events will be declared the Team
Anglers of the Year and will be awarded free entries to all 2013 Rayburn Team Series events. The teams
entering all 8 Rayburn Team series events will automatically qualify for all 3 of the Lakes Team Series
2-day Championships. Any team qualifying for any A/Q Championship will be allowed to enter the
Tournament of Champions on October 20-21 at Lake Falcon.
This 2nd event of 2012 was started at 6:35 am. Sam Rayburn water was in good shape and 8.90 feet
below normal pool level with water temps running 54-55 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a very
windy 33 degrees with a warming to 49 degrees by weigh in time. The fsh catching was not good on
Big Sam today as there were only 17 limits brought to the scales, for a total of 128 bass at 310.89 lbs
making the average bass brought to the scales today weigh 2.42 lbs.
The one man team of Clayton Boulware from Zavalla, TX ran his Nitro bass rig to north lake creek
areas over grass to catch his bass throwing rattle traps and swim baits in 2-6 ft of water. Clayton
managed to cull one time to fnish with 19.84 lbs. Clayton had a fne 9.16 pounder which was the Big
Bass of the event, his bag of fsh made him $2550.00 for his day on the water. Clayton also collected
the $250.00 Nitro Incentive Bonus for winning from his new Nitro boat.
Shannon Cryer from Nacogdoches, TX & Derek Mundy from Zavalla, TX ran their bass rig to north
lake creek areas to probe the ditches, drains & points with grass to bring 15.78 lbs to the scales.
Shannon & Derek fnished in 2nd and collected $1100.00.
The team of Rodney Dotson from Jasper, TX & Andrew Upshaw from Hemphill, TX fnished in 3rd
with 15.52 lbs and took home $900.00 for their day on the water. The team of Todd Castledine from

The bass are moving to the beds. Our warm winter has fred up the bass as well as the fsherman. The
most hunted freshwater fsh in the country, the Largemouth Bass. Lake levels are on the rise and the new
grass is a haven for the big bass. I ask: Are you ready?
The anglers are hooking their GPS maps to their home computers, checking out the contours of the
lakes to fnd the creeks and trails (bass highways) that the fsh are using to travel to the shallow waters.
We, the fshermen, are mentally picturing that 15lb bass laying on the bed and fipping that jig on her
nose. I ask again: Are you ready? You know when you set that hook the action is going to be tremendous
and the excitement is going to be fantastic. That is why I am asking: Are you ready?
Have you cleaned your reels? Hopefully you have, but if you have not I hope that no drag grease has
dried out causing your drag not to be smooth and possibly cause line breakage. Check the guides on your
rods to make sure they are not loose. Make sure the inserts are not grooved or cracked. Many tournament
fshermen are thinking about winning that bass tournament and spending money on lures, tackle, boats
and motors but do not make time for their rods and reels. This could be a costly mistake.
As your mind is running quickly making decisions about what size line, what color lures, jig or soft
plastic, we sometimes forget about the basics. As fshing has got more high tech with not only the new
electronics, but the new baits and realistic colors, it is no wonder we forget about the basics.
Have you recently checked your troll motor? Did you actually set the troll motor in the run position
and work your foot pedal to make sure the unit steers easily? Have you checked your trailer lights or your
running lights on your boat? Dont forget the most important item, your safety. How about your kill switch?
Will your life vest and fre extinguisher pass inspection? There are many more items to check, but keep
safety the number one priority.
Now I know that many of you are great sight anglers and can spot a bass on a bed from twenty yards
away. Remember to take your new polarized glasses with you. Last year I went to the lake ready to fnd
some bedding bass, I was fred up! I loaded up the truck and headed to the lake on a Friday evening and
got to the house about 10 pm. I quickly unloaded the truck and prepared the boat for the next morning.
I could not get the thought out of my mind about yanking one of those double digit bass into my boat. I
got in bed about midnight and set my alarm for 4 am. Well about 3:05 am I woke up remembering that
my new high dollar polarized glasses were setting on the kitchen table at home. Needless to say, I was not
very happy about the situation but I did have my old glasses at the lake house. So I mention this little
happening to suggest that we all make a list and check items off as we load everything into the vehicle
going to the lake.
I have one last suggestion to you club tournament fshermen and to one of my fshing buddies. Before
you take off from the boat ramp make sure you know what time to be back for the weigh in. Dont be late
it can be costly. Five good fsh dont count for anything when you are an hour late. LOL
I hope your equipment is in good shape but if you are in need of repair, visit your local repair shop. If I

The rains over the
last couple months have
given us some much-
needed breathing room
from our all time low
water level. With a rise
of nearly fve feet, we are
higher than the level this time last year-164.4ft msl.
Most of the major boat lanes are passable, but if you
are not familiar with an area that you know is safe,
SLOW DOWN.
Whats the single most important factor necessary
to catch fsh consistently? Is it the type of boat you
have? Is it the type of rod and reel you use? Is it the
type of lure, certain color or specifc size? Is it the type
of fshing line, diameter or color? We can go on and
on with hundreds of different variables. And yes, all of
these particulars have a certain bearing on catching
fsh. However, if you dont frst locate the fsh, it doesnt
matter what baits you are throwing or equipment you
are using; your chances of catching fsh are slim to
none.
The best way to locate fsh is to learn how to pattern
the fshes behavior. The best way to pattern fsh is
to know why fsh do what they do, where they do it,
and when they do it. There are literally hundreds of
books, publications and periodicals addressing this
subject with new scientifc information coming out all
the time. Once you learn the basics of behavior, and
this truly is an on-going study, then youve greatly
improved your chances of locating fsh.
After youve located the fsh, then you can
concentrate on the other particulars for putting the
fsh in the boat. All the new technology and electronics
that have evolved over the last decade is truly amazing
in helping us locate and catch fsh. However, unless
you know the basics of bass behavior, youll still be
fshing in the dark.
In March, the water temperature is one of the single
most factors to consider in locating and catching fsh.
When the water temperature reaches the middle to
upper 50s the Black Bass and Crappie will start moving
(staging), or heading to the spawning fats. When the
water reaches the upper 50s and lower 60s the fsh will
start moving onto the beds. Not all fsh move onto the
beds at the same time, but will move in waves and a
number of fsh might use the same beds at different
times. If a cold front moves in and drops the water
temperature, the fsh will not move far. They will just
back out to the nearest deep water.
March is also one of the best months for catching
White Bass (Sandies) and Yellow Bass (Bar Fish). If
the lake remains low, a lot of the Whites will spawn
on the main lake sandbars and not travel to the river
proper. Slab spoons, Road Runners, chrome Rat-L-
Traps, shallow diving crank baits, tail spinners and live
crawfsh will fll a cooler of fsh in short order.
Crappie will be moving into the creeks heading to
the shallow spawning areas. Jigs, shiners, and beetle
spins can all be productive.

Fish are being seen on
beds and staging on
points. Start your day in
6 to 8 ft, concentrating
on points. Use a 3/8 oz
chatter bait rigged with
a Lake Fork Magic Shad
in watermelon red with orange belly or a 3/16 oz Texas
rigged Wave anaconda in sweet potato pie color. Then
as the day warms move in to spawning areas and throw
a Wave Tiki Stick rigged wacky style in Christmas tree
or green pumpkin red fake colors. The best set up for
the chatter bait is a TFO 73 medium action rod and
20# fuoro carbon line on a 6.4:1 reel. Fish your Texas
rig on a TFO 73 med/heavy rod with the same size
line and reel. For your wacky worms switch to a TFO 7
medium spinning rod with 30# FINS Windtamer braid.
Make sure you have a good pair of polarized glasses
like the Flying Fisherman Sea Stars to see bedding fsh
and remember to spray all baits with KICK N BASS
Crappie~Excellent! Fish in 2 to 6 ft of water and use
Beatle Spins in orange with a gold blade or a tube in
blue/white under a cork on a 1/32 oz jig head.
Catfsh~ Good. Fish in shallow fats at the back of
creeks, use liver and trot line minnows.
Take a kid fshing and remember if it tugs on your
line, set the hook!!!!

BASS: Rising water
levels has been so very
helpful as boat launches
are improved plus drains
and coves have some
much needed area for
anglers to fsh as it has
been about one boat per drain/cove. March and April
this spring will be some awesome fshing as rising
water comes up over established shoreline grass plus
the deeper grass line to boot.
FISHING REPORT/BASS: We are still fshing
basically three patterns, depending on weather
conditions as well as time of day. Our shallow pattern
is where we target fsh in 1 to 6 feet with Stanley Vibra-
wedge spinnerbaits, Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps as well as
weightless plastics rigged TX style and worked slowly
through the shallow, submerged grass. Some days
they want the spinnerbaits and Traps and other days
they want a very slow weightless Berkley Jerk Shad,
Yamamoto Senko or Fluke.
Another productive pattern is to work the outside
edge of the grassline with DLN (Normans Deep Little
N), a Tx rigged Berkley Hopper as well as a wacky rigged
Senko or Bottom Hopper. This area, depending on grass
conditions, is running from 8 to 15 ft. The fnal pattern
continues to be a Carolina rig, drop shot and Stanley
Bugeye football jig worked on ridges and points 6 to 20
feet. On the C. R. we are using either a Berkley Power
Lizard, Magnum lizard, Jerk Shad, Fluke, Speed Craw
or 7 and 10 inch Power Worm. The jig color is mostly
black and blue and favorite drop shot worm is Berkley
Wacky Crawler which is a narrow, low-profle worm. A
small Berkley Havoc Bottom Hopper Jr. (4.75 in.) also
works great.
CRAPPIE: The crappie population is in transition
and basically wanting to go shallow to spawn but
weather conditions are slowing the process. When a cold
front hits things slow down and crappie are hanging in
ditches and creeks on the way back to spawning areas
so bridges are good to target early in the month. If we
get 2-3 warm days, look in the back of major feeder
creeks where a ditch drains into the creek and work this
area with jigs, Road Runners, Beetle Spins and just a
1/16 or 1/8 oz jig are great to locate them and then if
you wish you can change over to live shiners. However,
early spring crappie love a slow moving Road Runner
and Beetle Spin in 3-8 feet. I suggest 6 lb test Berkley
100% Fluorocarbon or Trilene XL line and a Abu Garcia
Orra S spinning reel for this method of fshing. I have
used Abu Garcia spinning reels for years and this one
will spoil you and at around $60 they are affordable.

Feb 12, 2012 - Anglers Quest 2012 Sam Rayburn Individual Series
# 2 out of The Umphrey Pavilion in Sam Rayburn, TX began this
event with 24 anglers showing up to fsh for the $2200.00 purse. This
2nd event of 2012 was started as a trailoring event at 6:35 am. The
weigh in time was conducted at 3:30 pm. Any Individual entering 6
of the 8 Individual series at Sam Rayburn will automatically qualify
for the 2-day Rayburn Championship. The top Individual in points
after all 8 events will be declared the Angler of the Year and will be
awarded free entries to all 2013 Rayburn Individual Series events.
The Individuals entering all 8 Rayburn Individual series events will
automatically qualify for all 3 of the Lakes Individual Series 2-day
Championships. Any Individual qualifying for any A/Q Championship
will be allowed to enter the Tournament of Champions on October
20-21 at Lake Falcon.
Sam Rayburn water was in good shape and 8.90 feet below normal
pool level with water temps running 54-55 degrees. The weather at
takeoff was a windy 27 degrees with a warming to 50 degrees by weigh
in time. The fsh catching was not good on Big Sam today as there
were only 2 limits brought to the scales, for a total of 37 bass at 83.95
lbs making the average bass brought to the scales today weigh 2.26 lbs.
Clayton Boulware from Zavalla, TX ran his Nitro/Mercury bass rig
to north lake points over grass to catch his bass throwing Lucky Strike
red eye shad & swim baits on his H&H rods & Revo reels spooled with
12lb furocarbon line in 2-7 ft of water. Clayton managed to catch 18
keepers to fnish in 1st place with 14.35 lbs and made him $1000.00
for his day on the water. Clayton also wanted to thank his sponsors,
Bass Pro Shops, Motorguide, Dusty Rhodes Marine and especially his
wife Elizabeth and kids Holden & Kristin.
Keith White from Sam Rayburn, TX ran his Skeeter/Yamaha to
north lake areas to fnish his day in 2nd with 2 bass at 10.75 lbs, one
of his bass was the Big Bass of the event at 7.57 lbs. Keith collected
$620.00 for his day on the water. Tommy Hill from Kountze, TX
fnished with 5 bass at 8.47 lbs and collected $300.00. Glen Kimble
fnished in 4th with 3 bass at 7.57 lbs and collected $160.00 for his
day on the water.

NEW RECORD! Dean Higginbotham of Washington, LA caught a new Louisiana State
Record for Yellow Bass on Toledo Bend. I caught this yellow bass at Toledo Bend Lake
with a oz. hammer spoon. I then called Mural Cormie, a friend of mine from Lake
Charles, LA and asked him to research online the Louisiana State record for yellow
bass. When he called me back he said the state record was 1.27 lbs. The next day I
went to the Wildlife and Fisheries in Opelousas, LA where one of the game wardens
stated that it was not a yellow bass. He stated it was a white bass. Phillip Butch Leb-
lanc, a friend of mine from Port Barre, LA and I have been shing yellow bass for over
20 years. We thought we could tell the difference between a yellow bass and a white
bass, so I brought the sh to the hatcheries in Forest Hill, LA where they weighed and
measured the sh. In an effort to identify this sh as a yellow bass they took out its liver
and sent it to LSU, which determined it was in fact a yellow bass. Since this sh was
determined to be a yellow bass the new record is now 2.56 lbs.

Nearly 30 pound stringer caught
in tumultuous rains on Rayburn for
$20,000 win

How hard are you willing to work for a $20,000 check? Bass Champs East Texas anglers vying for
that 1st place payday faced many challenges in that quest, not only competing against each other,
but fshing through torrential rains and continuously rising water levels. Six teams brought in sacks
breaching the twenty pound mark, but Jerry Silman and Brett Hortman were untouchable with their
limit nearly reaching 30 pounds!
Torrential fooding rains set the stage February 18 as Bass Champs anglers grit their teeth and
headed out on Sam Rayburn trying to catch a check in $56,750 being paid back to the top teams.
In less than 24 hours, Sam Rayburn rose nearly six inches, constantly changing the playing feld as
the contenders fshed. It wasnt until around noon when they fnally caught a break in the extreme
weather to have just a few more hours to fnd the fsh they needed.
The stage was set at the Umphrey Family Pavilion, ready for anglers to come in. The crowd began
to gather early, in anticipation for what was going to come in. Bass Champs staff had the grill nice
and hot, grilling hot dogs for everyone present to enjoy. Due to the weather conditions, teams were
allowed to trailer their boats to launches nearer to their fshing holes. At 3:00, the contenders began
arriving at the weigh in site.
Among the frst to come to the scales were Jerry Silmon & Brett Hortman. Their bag of fsh was
massive, and when the scales locked in at 29.61 pounds, they secured a massive lead for the rest of
the pack to try to catch. They had to watch for nearly an hour and a half while the remaining teams
brought in their catch until the scales closed at 4:30 and their decisive win was offcial. Bass Champs
awarded them the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000, and they shared the story of their day. It
started out rough this morning with the weather, but once we fnally made it to our spot, we power
poled down. Using Rayburn Red rattle traps along the inside grasslines, they landed three decent
ones pretty early. We never left that spot, the fsh were there. In the pounding rain they continued
to catch then cull, until 11:30. Our last cull was at 11:30. At that point we had all of our weight.
In the fnal tally, they won by more than a six pound lead! They would like to thank their sponsors,

Jonathan Garrie and Keith Morris brought in 23.33 lbs that won 2nd place. We started out with
spinnerbaits, looking for good spawning areas. We werent on any fsh, our deep fsh were gone.
They put a limit together pretty quick, but it was small only about 8 pounds total. Once we had a

limit in the boat, we switched to a 6th Sense square bill crank bait called Crush 50X and used both Blue Gill and Threadfn
Shad color patterns. They were able to cull all of their initial limit to the 23.33 pounds they came in with. Then they had
some boat trouble. Our cranking battery died at 1:30. Luckily, we were able to jump it from the trolling battery and get
back in. Thankful for their years of experience, we were just able to make the right decisions today. Bass Champs awarded
them $5,000 for their 2nd place win, and they would like to thank 6th Sense Lures, Hometown Tackle, Hale Tackle and
Custom Angle Rods for their support.
Wade Ellis and Joe Martin said their day was wet, cold and uneventful until 12:30 when the rain stopped. We had three
small ones in the livewell at that point, and we knew we had to change tactics and locations. Tying on a Santone swim jig
and a Santone football head jig, they headed to a spot between 6 and 8ft deep. Thats when we caught our kicker (8.63#)
and fve minutes later caught our 5th fsh, fnishing a limit. They continued catching a few more after that, we were
fnally able to cull some. They culled to a fnal weight of 22.36 lbs for a 3rd place win and a $3,000 check. They would like
to thank Santone Lures and Buster McNuttys for their support.
They were nearly the frst to the scales, but at one point wondered if they would even be able to arrive. Jarod Shelton and
partner Mike Garret brought in the Big Bass of the day weighing 9.09 lbs, garnering a check for $1,000 plus the $200 Biobor
bonus. We had put in at Twin Dikes, but waited to leave until 8:00 due to the lightening. Once we fnally made it to Five
Fingers, I threw a Lake Fork Tackle Carolina rigged ring fry, Jarod explained. He got the bite, she put up a pretty good fght.
I fnally got her in, and Mike netted her and put her in the livewell. We didnt realize how big she was at that point. Great
start to the day, then tragedy hit. At our next stop, we lost our lower unit. Defenseless against the rain, wind, waves, with
nothing to power them but their trolling motor, a fellow Bass Champs competitor saw them and came to help. He towed us
back to fve fngers, and I caught a ride with another Bass Champs team to get the truck while Mike stayed with the boat.
I wish I could remember the names of all the guys who helped us. They really saved us out there and we are so grateful to
them. We would also like to thank Bass Champs for putting these tournaments on for all of us. This Army Bass Anglers

The points race is another aspect of competition that results in a shuffing in the standings
throughout each season. Each time competitors sign up to fsh an event, they receive points. How
many points they receive is directly correlated to how much weight they bring in. The team with the
highest points at the end of the regular season is declared Anglers of the Year. The reward for this
accomplishment is free entries into the next season for the division they won the title in.

Area Club Updates
The Hawg Hunter Bass Club of Lake Charles held their February tournament on
Toledo Bend, on February 4th. Morning thunder storms held up most anglers at the
dock causing them to get a later than expected start to their spots. The delay did not
affect the team of Stewart Hunt and his guest, Buddy Burks, as they put together a very
impressive 5 fsh stringer that weighed 27.29 lbs. which was more than enough to
secure a frst place fnish. Their catch included the big bass of the tournament, a 7.35
pounder which was caught by Burks. The frst place team reported their catch came
from the southern end of the lake, and that all their fsh were caught on jigs.
The weight of 27.29 lbs. was a hard act to follow, however the team of Dean Jones
and Jeff Latham also had a great day on the water and brought in 5 fsh that weighed
20.75 lbs., which landed the team
in second place. Jones and Latham
also found their fsh around grass and
used jigs to catch the majority of their
tournament weight.
Using rattle traps and spinner baits,
the team of Rodney Owens and Scott
Gill took third place in the tournament
with a 5 fsh tournament limit that
weighed 11.28 lbs.
Harvey Coward continues his big stringer catches
and wins the Many Bass Clubs February 2012
tournament with a fve fsh limit weighing 18.17 lbs
which included a 7.49 lunker. Fishing in hurricane
(just joking) force winds, Coward caught his fsh in
grassy areas in 8 to 12 feet of water in the Pirates
Cove area of Toledo Bend using a jig and rattle trap.
Derek Mong fnished in second place with another
fve fsh limit weighing 13.31 lbs and Jim Campbell
was the third place winner with a fve fsh limit
weighing 13.04 lbs.
A total of 71 fsh were caught weighing 154 lbs
for an average fsh weight of 2.20 lbs.
None of our members reported any problems
running the lake during this tournament. Most boat launches were open and launching boats
without any signifcant low water issues. The weather on the other hand was; high winds on
Saturday and cold temperatures on Sunday, it kept everyone awake and alert. Toledo Bend
always wins!
The Sportsmans Bass Club of Southwest Louisiana held their annual awards banquet on January
21st to honor the top anglers of the 2011 season. J.D. Milstead won 6th place and big bass of the
year, Brian Phelps won 5th place, Scot Smith won 4th place, - Thelton Brown won 3rd place and heavy
stringer of the year, Chris Benoit won 2nd place and fsherman of the year for 5 consecutive years
is Louis Rouleau. These top
six anglers will represent the
Sportsmans Bass Club at the
ALBC Best Six Tournament on
May 4 - 6 at the Red River in
Natchitoches.

March 17th at Toledo Bend Reservoir. We will conduct
registration from our motel room at Fin & Feather Resort
beginning at 5:00 am. Trailering will be allowed once
you are registered and livewells checked. Weigh-in will
be near the ramp at Fin & Feather. If you have questions
or need more information please feel free to contact us

It Never Happens To Me!!!

We have all fshed in a tournament and came in to hear someone talk about how they, were
catching fsh from several areas. Sometimes they are even culling keeper fsh and you couldnt even
buy a keeper fsh! Well, on Saturday Feb. 11th at Lake Sam
Rayburn, Keith & Jana Cole came in with fve largemouth weighing 15.76 lbs. to take
1st Place in C.A.S.T. Southeasts second tournament of the 2012 season! Working back and forth
between three separate pods of fsh Keith & Jana kept their bite going all day building their stringer
with each fsh. At weigh-in Keith said, this never happens to me, but today it did! All of us have had
a great day of fshing, thats why we keep going back. The days of not catching fsh make the days of
loading the boat all the more gratifying. Congratulations to Keith & Jana!!!
Also having a great day on Sam Rayburn were Larry & Joyce Coleman. Larry & Joyce had a fve fsh
limit weighing 13.21 lbs. including the Big Bass of the day; a nice 5.61 lbs. fsh! The Colemans are on
a roll already in 2012 taking 2nd Place this weekend to go with their 3rd Place fnish two weeks ago at
Sam Rayburn. Well see if they can keep the mojo going at Toledo Bend Reservoir in March. Good Job
Guys!! Keep it going!
Taking 3rd Place for the tournament were a new couple to C.A.S.T. Southeast, Ryan Glass & Patricia
Kilgore, they also had a nice limit of bass weighing 13.08 lbs. This handsome stringer was caught
in-spite of the extremely cold and miserable weather at this event. The wind blew almost 15 mph out
of the north all day until weigh-in. Morning temperatures were in the mid 30s and with the wind it felt
like it was in the low 20s. Ryan & Patricia braved the cold, wind & waves to preserve a good day on a
bad weather day. They will be strong competitors for the rest of the year!
