Last year, Voorhees Middle

School teacher Noreen Saggese

rallied her sixth-grade students
together to raise money to find a
cure for cancer.
Shes shared snippets of her
own personal journey with can-
cer and students have responded
with a willingness to help.
Saggese, now in her 34th year
of teaching, is a breast cancer
survivor.
She said she just had a cancer
scare two weeks ago and still
longs for a time when cancer will
be a disease of the past. But in
the meantime, she is doing
everything she can to help find a
cure.
And thats why parents, teach-
ers, staff and students decided to
host an even bigger fundraising
event this year.
Last week, the entire school
community participated in a bas-
ketball shoot-off which Saggese
said gave kids a chance to take
their own shot at cancer.
Students paid $1 to take three
free throws on the basketball
court. If they made one in, they
received a ticket they could drop
into a box to be entered to win a
signed Flyers hockey stick from
coach Peter Laviolette, hockey
pucks signed by players or gift
cards.
But money raised wasnt

Almost five years ago, parents
of special needs children in
Voorhees were given an extra
voice in the school district.
SPEAK, Special needs Parents,
Educators and Kids of Voorhees,
began more than three years ago
when a group of parents wanted
to add their thoughts to the con-
versation in the school district.
One of the goals in establish-
ing the group, SPEAK Chair-
woman Juliana Maffei said, was
to raise special needs awareness
in the school district and commu-
nity.
SPEAK is about to celebrate its
third-annual Abilities Awareness
Week across the districts schools
and throughout the community.
The week kicks off on March 3
with an original theatrical musi-
cal production by the SPEAK
Arts program, a regional creative
and performing arts program for
children with disabilities. Stu-
dents will put on a show called
The History of the Olympics:
The Quest for Gold, on March 3
at 6 p.m. The show will be held at
Signal Hill Elementary School.
Tickets are $8.
Congregation Beth El will also
participate in Abilities Aware-
ness Week by hosting a Saturday

Residents voted to approve the
Voorhees Fire Departments
$7,466,965 budget by a margin of
469-397 on Feb. 18, Chief Jim Paci-
fico said.
The 2012 budget is under the 2
percent state-mandated cap.
The budget was slightly less
than last years nearly $7.5 mil-
lion budget.
In a close race, residents also
voted to send Thomas Hanney
and Barbara Silary to the
Voorhees Board of Fire Commis-
sioners.
Hanney and Silary both got 448
votes.
The two losing candidate
Vaughn Vandegrift and Kurtis
Stroemel received 438 and 431
votes respectively, Pacifico said.
Pacifico said he appreciates the
residents who turned out for the
weekend vote.
I thank them very much for

Saggese is part of a non-profit
group called Pennies in Action.
Uschi Keszler, a former
Olympic figure skater from Ger-
many-turned Canadian Olympic
coach, founded the group.
A few years ago, Saggese and
Keszler realized they shared a few
things in common. They were
both being treated by University
of Pennsylvania Dr. Brian Cz-
erniecki, co-director of the Rena
Rowan Breast Center.
And they were both passionate
about searching for new ways to
find a cure for something dear to
them.
Czerniecki began discussing a
vaccine he was working on that
could potentially cure different
forms of cancer. Some of the vac-
cines are still in a trial period at
Penn.
Both Saggese and Keszler said
they found their doctors research
intriguing and optimistic.
Keszler formed the group Pen-
nies in Action to help fund Cz-
ernieckis work at Penn to devel-
op life-saving vaccines.
When Saggese heard about her
doctors promising research, she
knew she had to get involved.
My doctor saved my life,
Saggese said. So I asked him
what can I do to help.

fund a vaccine for cancer

Teacher glad for support
From there, Saggese teamed up
with Keszler, who has conquered
both breast and uterine cancer.
Both Saggese and Keszler
admit Czernieckis research is ex-
perimental, but they both believe
his forward thinking will deliver
promising results.
Keszler said Czerniecki shared
his own story of becoming a doc-
tor, which solidified her thoughts
on supporting his research.
He wanted to be a forest
ranger and was told he was the
smartest in his class. So he went
to med school, Keszler said.
Hes a brilliant surgeon with a
brilliant imagination.
Each year, Czerniecki makes a
wish list of what he needs in his
lab. Most of the money Pennies in
Action raises goes to support his
needs to help develop the vac-
cines, Keszler said.
This year, the group helped
procure a new microscope, two
new incubators and a refrigerator
for his laboratory. Pennies in Ac-
tion also recently helped secure a
$1.4 million grant for his re-
search.
The rest of the money goes to-
ward making educational videos,
as well as other services the non-
profit provides.
Saggese said she will continue
her mission to bring awareness to
the disease. Shes happy she could
start with her own community.
My whole school, all the
teachers, my new principal
theyre all supporting me. Cancer
touches everyone, Saggese said.
Keszler said shes recently lost
three friends to pancreatic can-
cer. Harking back to her Olympic
days, she said this is one race she
has to win for herself and for
everyone else who battles cancer.
The Olympics are a big honor
to participate in. But theres no
podium finish in cancer. So Im
going for the gold, Keszler said.
With cancer, you have to win.
You win to live.

events during the week of March

formation about special needs in-
clusion.
Middle school students will get
to experience first-hand what its
like to live with a disability. Stu-

signed disabilities to see what it is
like to live as a child with disabili-

At the high school level, stu-

have the opportunity to share
their own experiences and ask
questions.

by offering up intentions at morn-

Abilities Awareness week will
culminate with SPEAKs first
gala, which will be held on March

The event begins at 7 p.m. and
will include live music, food and
drink, dancing, raffles and
awards. Tickets are $75 and can
be purchased at www.southje

Were excited about the gala.
Guests can expect to have a lot of
fun, Maffei said. Its a really
special event. The ability to go out
and dance and celebrate is not
necessarily related to special
needs families. So were getting a
double dose of fun.
Maffei said she hopes to see
students, families and residents
get involved with all of the Abili-

Its important, this concept of

in our opinion
O
n the surface, two bills recent-
ly introduced in Congress
make sense. They would re-
strict the number of fees airlines
could charge. After all, who hasnt
been on a plane where everyone is
wrestling to get overhead storage
space for their 73 carry-on bags they
brought to avoid baggage fees?
Problem is, this is America, and
America has achieved economic great-
ness because it allows, for the most
part, businesses to compete without
many rules. Once government gets
into regulating things that dont relate
to, for example, safety, the whole sys-
tem gets messed up.
Naturally, the airlines arent in favor
of these bills. Some of them already
waive baggage fees for one or two
pieces.
Others correctly point out that,
charging fees, while keeping fares
lower, gives consumers a choice. In-
deed, if you travel without checked
bags, you probably would opt for the
airlines that offer lower fares, but
charge for checked baggage. Its less
money out of their pockets for the
same service they would receive on
any airline.
Congressional supporters of the
bills point out that consumers dont
like the fees. Well, of course, they
dont. No one likes fees.
If Congress would check, were sure
it would find that people dont like
high airline ticket prices, either. Or, in
keeping with the air travel theme,
parking rates that rise as you get clos-
er or more convenient parking spots at
an airport. Or high-priced food in air-
port restaurants.
Sure, some air travellers can feel
like they are being nickeled and dimed
to death. But its their choice to fly the
airlines that charge these fees. There
are any number of ways to avoid the
fees, they just choose not to do so.
This is a business model, pricing
choice. Its what keeps businesses
competitive. Congress should stay
away.
Keep air fee bills grounded
Congress should let the free enterprise system work
Hands off private business
Congress has better things to do with
its time than to get involved with air-
line fees. Let consumers make choic-
es and the airlines make business
decisions.
On Dec. 1, As-
sembly Majority
Leader Louis
Greenwald, of
Voorhees, intro-
duced a bill allow-
ing school districts
the option of mov-
ing their school
elections from
April to November
to coincide with the
general election.
The bill received
final legislative
approval on Jan. 9
and became law
on Jan. 17.
More than 76
percent of school districts in New Jersey
moved their elections to November prior to
the Feb. 17 deadline.
The move places board candidates on
the November ballot, but eliminates the an-
nual vote on proposed school budgets that
do not exceed the states 2 percent tax-levy
cap.
In our community, both the Voorhees
Board of Education and the Eastern Cam-
den County Regional School District Board
of Education voted to move school elec-
tions to November.
Greenwald initiated the legislation be-
cause April school elections across the
state cost as much as $9 million annually,
but fewer than 15 percent of registered vot-
ers went to the polls. The law saves taxpay-
ers money and (will) get more people in-
volved in the selection of school board
members.
Regarding the issue of charter schools
in Voorhees on Feb. 16, I attended a meet-
ing in Trenton with state Senate President
Steve Sweeney and Sen. Jim Beach in a
continuing effort to get the approval of the
Regis Academy Charter School in Cherry
Hill overturned and advance legislation to
give residents an opportunity to vote on
whether a charter school can be open in
their community.
Others at the meeting included Mayor
Chuck Cahn, of Cherry Hill; Mayor Gary
Passanante, of Somerdale; and representa-
tives of the Voorhees and Cherry Hill
school systems.
Both Sweeney and Beach agreed to fight
for our cause.
Writer proud to see new
preschool inclusion program
The Voorhees Board of Education an-
nounced that in the 2012-2013 school year, it
will offer a half-day preschool program
for children with and without disabilities.
For this, the board deserves a great deal of
credit. Quality preschool inclusion pro-
grams help children and their families.
They increase childrens chances of suc-
cess in school and community.
They reduce the likelihood of academic
failure, social struggles, behavioral prob-
lems and emotional distress.
They reduce the need for expensive out-
of-district placements and may reduce fu-
ture remedial costs.
This is excellent use of tax money.
My thanks to the board.
