DRUG STUDY DRUG NAME Brand Name: Risek Generic Name: Omeprazole Dose: 40 mg/vial Frequency and Time:

Every 12 hours Route: IV Push MECHANISM OF ACTION Omeprazole reduces gastric acid secretion through a unique mechanism of action. Omeprazole belongs to a new class of antisecretory compounds, the substituted benzimidazoles that do not exhibit anticholinergic or histamine antagonistic properties. It inhibits secretion of gastric acid by irreversibly blocking the enzyme system of hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphate (H+/K+ ATPase), the proton pump of the gastric parietal cell. This effect is dose related and leads to inhibition of both basal and stimulated acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus. ADVERSE REACTIONS Common: Central and Peripheral Nervous System: Headache. Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and flatulence. Uncommon: Central and Peripheral Nervous System: Dizziness, paresthesia, somnolence, insomnia and vertigo. Hepatic: Increased liver enzymes. Skin: Rash and/or pruritus, urticaria. Others: Malaise. CONTRAINDICATIONS Patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of Risek or to substituted benzimidazoles. INDICATIONS Treatment of symptomatic gastroesophageal disease (GERD) without esophagitis; healing of erosive esophagitis; peptic ulcer disease; maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis; gastric and duodenal ulcer; treatment and prophylaxis of NSAIDassociated ulceration; eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection associated with peptic ulcer disease; ZollingerEllison syndrome; dyspepsia and prophylaxis of acid aspiration. NURSING RESPONSIBILITES y Dosage adjustments arent needed for patients with renal or hepatic impairment. y Omperazole increases its own bioavailability with repeated doses. y Caution patient not to perform hazardous activities if dizziness occurs.

Rare: Central and Peripheral Nervous System: Reversible mental confusion, agitation, aggression, depression and hallucinations, predominantly in severely ill patients. Endocrine: Gynecomastia. Gastrointestinal: Dry mouth, stomatitis and GI candidiasis. Hematological: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis and pancytopenia.
