Statement of Purpose for Nguyen Thi Thu Ngoc I wish to apply for admission to your post-graduate programme in Human

Resource Management at the University of Derby for the September 2009 intake in order to enhance my career prospects in the field of management. Academic Background I graduated from Binh Duong University with a bachelors degree in International Business in 2008. I enjoyed studying and excelled at International Relations, Business Negotiation, Business Management, International Marketing and Investment. Due to Vietnams history and economic rise in the global market, International Relations interests me because I am want to learn more about the global affairs of multinational companies. During university I was the team leader on a presentation project in this subject. My job was to liaise with my professor and disseminate information to my team, as well as control group discussions and implement our plans. During my undergraduate studies, the faculty in the department paid a lot of attention to our teamwork negotiation, and our ability for creative and independent thinking. I learned to think independently in order to recognise the most important ideas and opinions and to explain my reasons to the group. I learned how important interpersonal skills are to succeeding in managing and leading people in the workplace. With this kind of background I believe it will be easier for me to achieve goals in my career and personal life with a professional attitude, enthusiasm and excellent communication and negotiating skills. Extra-Curricular Activities During my time at university I was involved in various extracurricular activities. I joined the Blue Smile Program as a volunteer to support old and poor people who live far from the booming economy of Ho Chi Minh City. I had a chance to meet and communicate with people of varying socio-economic class and this helped me to sympathize with and understand these people from different backgrounds. I had the chance to teach children which was a great learning experience for me. I enjoyed the challenge of managing the class and designed activities that the children enjoyed very much. I had to learn to think on my feet and felt a great sense of personal development. I also joined in activities which the Communist Youth League and University organized. Through those activities, I successfully enhanced my teamwork spirit and communication skills. I believe these activities helped me develop my potentiality and also to become more mature and responsible. Work Experience Regarding work experience, while I was studying second year university, I opened a fashion shop in my hometown and hired two staff to take care of my shop. I managed the business for two years and it made good profits in that time. Eventually I decided to close my shop to prepare for my final university exams. Gaining management experience taught me how to deal with various problems as well as how to budget and handle money and take care of the administration of a business. I also developed a greater selfawareness and confidence from this. After graduation, I have been working part-time in my uncles company. As an assistant, I got experiences about administration skill as well as dealing with customers, solving arising problems, managing contracts and arranging scheduling. Motivation I have chosen to study a masters degree in the UK because it will enable me to further my career in Vietnam. In the UK I will be able to work for two years after graduating. This experience will help me find a much better job when I return to Vietnam. Also, I believe that UK institutions guarantee a quality education. After carefully researching the various universities in the UK that offer a master in this programme, I believe that your school is one of the most suitable. Areas such as Training, Learning and Development and Employee Relations and Law interest me as they can develop my knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity, training, learning and development. This will be very useful for my future career as I believe relevant and well exuceuted training programs are one of the key elements in successful human resourse management. Of course, your university has a strong reputation, however the main reason is most certainly because of the programme itself. Also, I really think that the study of human behavior is fascinating and key to becoming a good HR Manager. In Vietnam, there is a high demand for qualified HRM managers and I see great potential for career development in this area.

Future Career Plans Vietnam is a developing country and since joining the WTO in 2006, there are many more companies that have come to Vietnam to establish themselves here or invest in the country. After graduating with a masters degree, I can greatly improve my future employment prospects and I will be able to develop my role as a CPO in a large multinational Human Resource Companies in Vietnam. I hope the invaluable HR knowledge I gather can be applied to Vietnams markets to help my country to become a strong and reliable HR center which will develop society and the well being of the people. Yours sincerely, Nguyen Thi Thu Ngoc _________ These are Transferable Skills that the student has learned. This is very important as they show the university what the student has learned and how they have matured as a student. It isnt necessary to have as many as this SOP but still very important to have in a study plan..
