BIO1CO BIOLOGY OF CELL AND ORGANISM ( 15 CPs Teaching Period: Semester 1 Start: 27-FEB-12 End: 01-JUN-12 BE and Teaching Period: Semester 1 Start: 27-FEB-12 End: 01-JUN-12 ML and Teaching Period: Semester 2 Start: 23-JUL-12 End: 26-OCT-12 ML.) BE: Dr
Sabine Wilkens (Primary Coordinator), ML: Dr Sabine Wilkens (Primary Coordinator) In this subject, you are introduced to biology by discussing units of ever increasing size and complexity. We begin with molecules and cells, then proceed to tissues and organs in plants and animals, and how these units cooperate in the whole organism. Topics covered in lectures include cell and molecular biology, structure and function of animal and plants, Mendelian genetics as well as biological principles. The practical component focuses on biological observation, recording skills and data interpretation, and introduces a number of biological disciplines (eg microscopy, microbiology, biochemistry and physiology). Tutorials help re-enforce the lecture material, but also introduce new and interesting concepts. Class requirements: Three 1-hour lectures and a 2-hours of combined practical/tutorial work per week.. Assessment: 3-hour examination (55%) , Biological drawings and exit paragraphs in laboratory classes (20%). , Written assignment (different from hurdle requirement) (10%). , One laboratory report (5%). , One poster (group exercise) (5%). , Two 30-min mid-semester tests (5%). Hurdle requirement: submission of a separate diagnostic writing task by the end of week 3 and 70% minimum attendance at laboratory classes. BIO1GEN GENETICS, HUMAN BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION ( 15 CPs Teaching Period: Semester 1 Start: 27-FEB-12 End: 01-JUN-12 AW and Teaching Period: Semester 2 Start: 23-JUL-12 End: 26-OCT-12 BU. ) BU: Ms Jodie Young (Primary Coordinator), AW: Dr Susan
Lawler This is an introduction to general genetics and human biology suitable for students intending to pursue further studies in these areas or as a onesemester terminal subject. Included is the history and importance of genetics in understanding human nature and in improving quality of life. Topics include the nature and functioning of the genetic message, the mechanics of inheritance, developmental and quantitative genetics, genes in populations, conservation and ecological genetics, human behavioural genetics and the significance of human genetic variation, genetics in larger evolutionary patterns, the origin of life, speciation, macro-evolution and the origins of modern humans. Prerequisite: Students from other faculties require the approval of the unit co-ordinator. Class requirements: three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical or workshop per week. Assessment: AW: Prac quizzes (10%) , BU : Practical question-answer exercises (10%). , AW and BU: one 3-hour end of semester examination (65%). , AW and BU: two scientific reports (500-600-words each) (15%). , BU: two x 1-hour mid semester practical tests (short answer questions) (10%). , AW: one x1-hour mid semester examination (10%). MAT1MAB MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS IN BIOLOGY (15 CPs Teaching Period: Semester 2 Start: 23-JUL-12 End: 26-OCT-12 BU. ) Dr John Banks (Primary
Coordinator) You will be introduced to how mathematical models are used in biological, biophysical sciences and we will emphasise insight into how models may be derived from biophysical assumptions. A small but representative range of biophysical applications is investigated. The subject is organised in modules, each focusing on a specific application. The subject is delivered mainly on-line. Learning resources including all lecture materials will be available on-line. Students meet one hour per week for a problem solving class to work through problem sets designed to strengthen basic mathematical skills. Considerable use will be made of spreadsheets as a tool for understanding mathematical models and performing calculations. Class requirements: two 1-hour problem solving classes per week. Assessment: One 1.5 hour examination (30%) , six on-line quizzes (equivalent to 800-words in total) (20%). , 4 problem class quizzes (equivalent to 400-words in total) (10%). , 3 electronic assignments (equivalent to 800-words in total) (20%). , 2 written assignments (equivalent to 800-words in total) (20%). PHY1PA PHYSICS A ( 15 CPs Teaching Period: Semester 1 Start: 27-FEB-12 End: 01-JUN-12 BE.) Dr
Katherine Legge (Primary Coordinator) This subject is designed to promote a conceptual understanding of physics in the areas of mechanics, heat and material properties. Many of the topics students may have met in previous studies. In this unit there will be an emphasis on developing a firm understanding of the topics and the ways in which the concepts may be represented. Particular emphasis is placed on mathematical representation. The subject lays the foundation for subsequent studies in the engineering program or further studies in physical sciences. Prerequisite: VCE Physics 3 and 4 and Mathematical Methods 3 and 4 or equivalent.. Class requirements: three 1-hour lectures, one 2-hour practical and one 1hour tutorial per week (including up to a maximum of 13 hours of directed learning per semester). Assessment: one practice exam (open book) (5%) The tests provide formative feedback to the students throughout the semester with regard to their understanding of some basic concepts covered., one 3-hour examination (60%). In order to pass this subject, students must obtain a mark of at least 40% on the examination, as well as an overall mark of at least 50%. , laboratory work (20%). , Three 1/2 hour tests (15%).
