February 20, 2012 at 4:58 pm (Edit) For how many years is a typical baby travel system safe? We have an almost 4 yr old and are due with our second child in 5 months. We have everything we need, but a friend warned me against using our carseat and stroller again, becuase it may be out of safety regulation being almost 4 yrs old. Its a Chicco KeyFit 30, and had great safety ratings when we purchased it. Any one know typically how many years a travel system is good for? Reply

Star is a chick:
February 24, 2012 at 3:26 am (Edit) Most car seat brands are 6 years from the date of manufacture. The KeyFit 30 is still considered to be a great seat. Flip it over and look for a do not use after date stamped into the shell. Once youre sure its not expired, use the model number off the seat to search for a recall- for any seat. For the KeyFit, Chicco has only had one recall since 2001 and I dont think your seat was produced between the dates for the recall, here it is http://wwwodi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/childseat.cfm#mfg_anchor Reply

March 2, 2012 at 11:08 am (Edit) Do you plan on having any more kids after this one? if so I dont recommend buying pink because if you were to have a boy after, I doubt you would want to use it. Im having a little girl and went with gender neutral so I can use it again with my next child. How dirty it would get depends. My trunk can get kind of dirty sometimes with everything going in and out (especailly dirt on the stroller wheels) so you might find it would get dirty in there. Its up to you. Reply

February 21, 2012 at 12:50 am (Edit) Can anyone recommend a good baby travel system (capsule and pram) in Australia? Or if any overseas brands will ship not for a fortune. Reply

panteck:
March 4, 2012 at 8:35 pm (Edit) Hello Khadija. Through my experience, i avoided doing the baby capsule thing as it cost too much money for only a short period of time. Instead, i opted for a SAFE N SOUND car seat for newborns to 15kgs. It cost me about $300.00 (Australian). I didnt mind paying this as it is an investment in my childs safety. It starts in reverse (newborn faces the rear of the vehicle) and fully reclines. When your baby reaches 9kgs (by Aust. law) you are then able to turn it around and face the front of the vehicle. It is appropriate to use up until they reach the 15kg mark then you need to look at switching to another type of car seat. As i was so happy with the Safe n Sound brand, i stuck with it right through. As for a pram, i feel one that you are able to fully recline for your newborn is fantastic, then as your child grows, you are able to pull the seat up. The pram i used was Bertini it was a four wheel, pneumatic tyres (pump up ones) and it came with a wind sock, weather shield, and was able to adapt as the children grew. It was r.r.p of $600.00 at the time, (far too expensive) but i was able to pick it up second hand for a steal!! Try looking on the internet (like eBay) or The newspaper appropriate for whichever state you are in. Trading Post, The Advertiser etc. Hope that helped!! Reply

March 6, 2012 at 1:06 am (Edit) I dont know of exactly which travel system would be best, but with my experience there are a few features you want to take note of that will make things easier for your wife, or anyone really. 1) Buckles of the carseat A puzzle lock clip is very annoying because the two pieces have to fit together before being snapped in. Look for a harness that buckles in with 2 individual prongs. (see below for a photo of the type of harness that is easier) 2) Carseat handle You want a handle that is easy to adjust it up and down. I find that one where you squeeze a button on each side of the handle as you move it up and down is MUCH easier than one where you push a button on each side with your fingers. (see below for photos) 3) Adjustment of carseat harness Some carseats have a nifty feature where you push a button which then loosens the harness. Youll know it has this feature because there will be a tail of harness strap in the front. You will have to try them out in the store or read reviews online as some you have to press harder than others. However, even one you have to press hard is much better than one you have to rethread the harness straps in the back of the carseat! 4) Weight of the carseat None are really that light, but some are lighter than others. I would find one with the best features even if its not the lightest one because the carseat can go in the stroller anyway. 5) Stroller look for something that is lightweight, not big and bulky and folds up quickly and easily 6) Stroller and carseat together make sure it is easy to secure the carseat in the stroller and taking it out as well Sorry I cant point you to a specific one, but I hope this helps a little in your search. You can look for travel systems and read customer reviews on websites like babiesrus.com. In response to the other answer that someone else gave you may want to look into a Baby Bjorn, Infantino, Ergo, Maya wrap or other carrier as well. I do find a sling/carrier useful. However, your baby will need a car seat anyway so find one with the features that you like. The great thing about an infant car seat as opposed to a convertible car seat is you dont have to wake up your baby to

put them in a sling. I had a c-section and several months after having the baby I still become very sore after walking around with the baby in a sling for too long. A car seat/stroller combo works much better for me. Also, I am scared of slipping on ice while Im carrying the baby in a sling (not an issue for everyone, of course) a stoller is much safer for me. You and your wife will know what is best! Reply

March 1, 2012 at 4:01 pm (Edit) I bought a dark blue Graco stroller when I was pregnant with my first. We got a lot of use out of it! Then when baby #2 showed up we bought a dark blue tandem stroller which I hated! That thing didnt turn well. Anyway we used the first stroller with the second baby too. And it seems no matter how clean you try to keep it, if youre using it A LOT like we did it always gets a bit dirty. Id have to think that on pink it would really show more. Im guilty of looking at a pink one myself now~~my kids are 8 & 6 so I long ago sold all my baby stuff and now Im pregnant again!! Even though I like this pink one I dont dare buy it. I have no idea what Im having yet, plus I plan to be pregnant at least one more time after this and if thats a boy, I dont think hell appreciate the pink stroller! Reply

I am about to buy a baby travel system, I have seen the Cosatto Mobi on line and looks great but havent find any shop that have it, dont want to order online before seeing it, any advaice of which of this two options is better? Alexa's Mom:
February 27, 2012 at 11:02 am (Edit) I looked at a few sites with customer reviews. The bugaboo seems to get decent reviews but in my opinion not as good as it should for the price! I didnt see a lot of info on the Cosatto. Babies r us carries both brands and has an excellent exchange policy. You may need to special order it but if youre going to spend that kind of money order it, buy it and return it if you dont like it! I picked my stroller based on product reviews by other moms and Im happy with the outcome. Reply

February 26, 2012 at 4:28 pm (Edit) Car seat for new baby. Travel system, convertible seats or infant seat, which is better? Suggestions please!!! I am having a baby within the next few weeks and Im racking my brain trying to find the best car seat for our unborn son. I dont know whether to invest in a travel system, convertible seat or simply get an infant seat. It makes sense to get a convertible seat but are these just as safe as the infant seats? Also Im wondering if we should go with a travel system because it includes the infant seat and the stroller. Ive spend countless of ours researching this but its becomign overwhelming!! I need help in finding something thats going to be safe, reliable, nice looking, good price and sensible. Suggestions on actual car seats would be great! Thanks in advance!!!!!! Reply

February 28, 2012 at 8:12 am (Edit) At the very least you will end up buying 3 carseats/boosters for your child over the course of the next 10-12 years. I would definitely go with an infant seat to start. Some people do start with convertibles, but most do not fit infants well and it really is nice to take a sleeping baby out of the car without waking him or her and if you live in a cold climate it is nice to be able to get baby all buckled into the seat before you go outside. You dont need to buy a travel system. I wish I hadnt. I ended up with a good carseat, but the big bulky stroller that I hated. Find an infant seat with a front harness adjuster that you like, then find a stroller that you really like. Most are compatible. Next, you will need a convertible seat. Definitely go for a higher weight limit seat (65+pounds WITH harness), it should last you to booster age which is at least 4 years and 40lbs, but staying in a 5 point harness is much safer. Someone mentioned an Alpha Omega (aka Eddie Bauer, etc) 3-in-1 that goes to 100 lbs. Some manufacturers tout that it is the only seat you will ever need. It does go to 100lbs, but only to 40lbs with the harness. It has very low top harness slots, so most kids outgrow it by height before they are ready for a booster. It is a very narrow seat (on the inside) so most kids cant use it as a booster for as long as they need to be in a booster. Carseats also expire after 6 years, so it definitely wont get you to the end of booster age. Check the links below for great message boards with wonderful certified carseat techs who can help you narrow down your choices. Remember, the BEST carseat is one that fits your child and your vehicle correctly and is used correctly every time. Reply

February 26, 2012 at 5:26 pm (Edit) Is there a baby travel system which ..? .is compatible with a car seat that is suitable from birth and which can be used with an Isofix base, which can also (the base) be retained for use with car seats for larger infants and small children? I dont think there is but maybe someone knows? I know that Maxi-Cosi and Britax both make travel systems and Isofix-compatible car seats for new babies, I guess the question is, are the Isofix bases for these seats compatible with other car seats as the baby grows? February 29, 2012 at 10:21 am (Edit)

Im not a big fan of travel systems, but the Chicco is okay, I used that. The Chicco Cortina is so easy to steer one-handed! The travel system comes with the Keyfit for the infant seat. I find Graco, Evenflo, etc. to be cumbersome and annoying to steer. The Graco infant seat is good, though, and you can clip that into non-Graco strollers. You have to get an adapter for it to work with some strollers (like Bob, and I think maybe Peg Perego.) Keep in mind that the travel system is used for a limited amount of time. Make sure you love the stroller when not using it with the infant seat, because youll be using the stroller a lot longer as just a stroller. I would spend some time in a store like Babies R Us or Buy Buy Baby and test out strollers. Fold them and open them. Try to steer with one hand. If you cant get to stores like that, read the reviews on the websites. Babies R Us has lots of reviews. Reply

Goldmother:
March 4, 2012 at 7:05 am (Edit) Absolutely! It is not good for a baby to be in the position of the car seat for long periods. Imagine how uncomfy it would be to be rolled over like that. A carry cot allows them to stretch and move. Reply

March 6, 2012 at 6:22 am (Edit) I wasnt aware that they made ones like that. Usually, the travel system only includes an infant car seat which the baby grows out of by the time they are 6 to 9 months or so. At that time, they still need a rearfacing carseat, but a bigger one (usually a convertible car seat). I like the Graco travel system b/c the infant car seat has a great safety rating. Reply
