Signature ____________________________ Closed book. If you do not understand a question, clearly state an assumption and proceed. There are FIVE questions. All questions carry equal weight. No calculators or other electronic devices are allowed. At the end of the exam, when time is up: - Stop working and turn your exam upside down. - Remain silent. - Do not move or speak until all exams have been picked up, and a TA or the Professor gives the go-ahead to leave.

Question 1
A simple mass-spring-damper system is described by the following equation: x + 2 x + 5 x = 10 cos(t ) a. Find the undamped natural frequency and damped frequency of this system. b. Find the general form of the transient response. c. Find the steady state response of this system. d. Find the impulse response of this system.

Question 2
Refer to the figure. Use , the clockwise angular displacement of bar AB, as your generalized coordinate. Assume small . Both bars are identical with length L and mass m. The moment of 1 intertia of a bar about its centre of mass is mL2 . 12 a. Find the kinetic energy of the system. b. Find the potential energy of the system. c. Find the equivalent mass and equivalent stiffness of this system. d. Find the natural frequency in terms of the equivalent mass and stiffness. Write down the equation of motion of this system in terms of the equivalent mass and stiffness.

Question 3
The equations of motion of a system are given by M x + K x = 0 where 2 0 3 2 M = K = 2 12 0 8 Find: a. The natural frequencies (Hint: 32=2*16, 48=3*16) b. The modeshapes c. The general form of the free vibration response d. The modal matrix (you do not need to normalize it)

Question 4
A 2 degree-of-freedom system is described by the following equation of motion in physical coordinates 32 12 x1 80 24 x1 64 . 12 5 x + 24 8 x = 2t 2 2 40 e The system is assumed initially at rest (zero initial conditions). The mass-normalized modal matrix for this sytem is given by 1/ 2 1/ 4 Pn = 1 1
a. b. c. d. Find the equations of motion in modal coordinates. Solve the equations of motion in modal coordinates. Write the conversion from modal coordinates back to physical coordinates. What are the natural frequencies and associated modeshapes for this system?

Question 5
Consider the system as shown in the figure. a. Find the equations of motion for this system in matrix form. b. Find the transfer function matrix and frequency response matrix for this system. c. Find the steady state amplitude of the main mass m1 for an input f (t ) = F0 sin(t ) , with f (t ) applied to m1 only as shown in the figure. d. For a given input f (t ) = F0 sin(t ) applied to m1 only (as in part (c)), what is the best choice of parameters for the vibration absorber, k2 and m2 , to mimize the motion of the main mass m1 ?
