Our key volunteers from across Europe convened at Hilton London Kensington for their annual workshop.
The delegates enjoyed a performance from The Kaos Signing Choir for Deaf and Hearing Children, a choir for children aged 4-17, some of whom are deaf or are hard of hearing. They performed two songs One World and Respect - see this link for more!
the UK, which offers such expert support and services for his fouryear old son, Robert. Another parent, Dushyant Patel explained what a relief it was for him and his wife to find such a centre of expertise for their daughter Amaya, who was born profoundly deaf but now aged 2 is really progressing. HCF has helped to support the development of their sensory garden and outdoor space, which is at a premium in their central London location. Amber Foundation, a Wiltshire based charity for young homeless people who have lost their way in life and need support, also attended. The charity has benefited from support from HCF and also through a local partnership with Hilton Swindon (see more on page 17). The delegates heard from Hollie, who had experienced a chaotic upbringing and suffered from family breakdown, moving with her mother www.hilton-foundation.org.uk
between 24 addresses during her teens and leaving home when her mother settled with a new partner and she was no longer welcome. Hollie had ended up with an eating disorder and very low self esteem, compounded by a two-year relationship in which she experienced domestic violence. She had come to Amber and had established some new goals for herself and found her self-worth. She had undertaken a boating challenge which showed her what could be achieved. She is looking forward to training to become a teacher for children with special needs. Dean also shared his story; he had been thrown out of his home aged 15 and had been drifting and staying with friends ever since and had been in prison for drugs-related offences. Most recently he had been living in a tent, drinking and taking drugs to escape when he found out about Amber through a friend and was referred by his probation officer.
Dean said he had now been drugs and drink-free for 5 months and had found some goals to aim for. He has been recently selected to go to Borneo on a volunteer visit, for which he has to fundraise and plan and is excited about his new life. Harvey, 9 years old, explained the work of Wheelies Sport and Activity Club, a Macclesfield-based charity which had benefitted from the Manchester 10K Giveaway in December 2011. Harvey suffers from cerebral palsy and this impedes his physical movement. Without a trace of shyness, he explained to the 100 delegates that Wheelies is a club for children with disabilities to meet and have fun trying all sorts of sports and activities which build
confidence. It is a place for friendship and he said to everyone they had helped to make a big difference a HUGE difference - A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE! The highlight of the Wheelies year is a trip to the Calvert Trust (another of HCFs previous beneficiaries) in the Lake District. Funding from HCF will help pay for club members to attend the 2012 expedition. Harvey shared the fact that the zip-wires and abseiling sort those who are brave from those who are scared; his mother Angela is apparently scared doing these activities!
long day and he was absolutely exhausted by the end of it but has enjoyed telling everyone at school how it went.

The presentations were very good and moving and it really does put into perspective the value of the fundraising we do.

During the Workshop the Champions were encouraged to work in groups to create short videos that explored a number of themes: motivation, charity, success, community, support and teamwork. Facilitated by digital artists from social enterpise FreQOUT! and the charity Vital Regeneration, the groups used the technique of stock frame animation to capture their concepts to film. These were shown at the end of the day and the final versions will soon be published on Youtube.
improving duck sales, adding Foundation targets to the hotels KPIs, motivating other team members at the hotel to be more involved and enhancing PR and awareness of the Foundation at local level.
Sharing experience
The delegates heard a message of support from Bob Brooks in the Hilton brand team and were encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas during the day through sessions on fundraising, finance and Open space, facilitated by change consultancy Transcend, which enabled the participants to explore and discuss themes that they had come up with, which included
It was inspirational and I have many new ideas after speaking with other champions. It was very emotional to see and hear from the children. It was also such a fun day and everyone was so friendly.

The Workshop certainly better equipped me for the year to come and it was great to meet the champions from other hotels

It was truly amazing to see all these committed people from the other hotels, get new ideas, get guidance for our future work and last but not least also a great motivation to continue what we do

On Friday 3rd February, the Kids an die Macht (Power to the Kids) event was successfully rounded off with a wonderful charity dinner at Hilton Munich Park, supported by Hilton Munich City. 25 children from the hotels local charity Artists for Kids had been working for two days at the hotel, experiencing all different kind of jobs from receptionist to General Manager to Spa manager. Cluster Area General Manager Marcus-Milan Arandelovic said: We wanted to give these kids an inside view of the hotel business and provide them with a new perspective. Most of them never thought of applying for a job or traineeship at a Hilton hotel and were kind of scared in the beginning. But they all became more and more secure in their hotels roles and they had a great time with our team members and guests. One of the girls who participated in the 1st Power to the kids project is now in the 2nd year of her apprenticeship. During Friday evening, 140 guests joined the Hilton team, actor Max Tidof and his wife and of course the children, for a special dinner created by German star and TV chef Alexander Herrmann. Nina Eichinger, daughter of the famous producer Bernd Eichinger who founded Artists for Kids, and comedian Florian Simbeck presented the evening and all the guests enjoyed not just a delicious menu, but extraordinary service by the young people, live music and an entertaining show. 26,063 was raised in total for Artists for Kids. This will be used to support their country home project and apprenticeship programme.

They were split into five groups and joined by young students with a variety of physical and learning disabilities, exploring themes such as the History of the Olympics and the History of Hilton Hotels. They used expression and body movements to describe the conference week and finished by developing a rap song. Chicken Shed is a special theatre which offers BTEC courses in drama for young people with physical and learning disabilities. It stages productions which foster and promote inclusivity. Five delegates who took part said it was the best thing about the conference so far! Another group attended the Capital City Academy in Willesden, where the Youth Sport Trust had organised an afternoon of sports and
marketing challenges. The charity benefitted and the young people got to practice their leadership skills. Our third group braved the ice cold weather and spent the afternoon clearing the gardens of vulnerable residents on the Lisson Green Estate, in the borough of Westminster. Despite its world fame for the Houses of Parliament, the borough has pockets of severe deprivation and poverty, with many residents needing extra support. I really enjoyed taking part! Bas de Graaf, Hilton Singapore The afternoon at Chicken Shed was inspiring, gave food for thought and helped us to understand each other a lot better. Marco Simon, Hilton Worldwide Sales
Gardens are cleared and spruced up, while inclusive drama and sport led by young people are the order of the day for others. For more photos and videos, visit our Facebook page today.

Hospice visit
On the evening of 8 February three volunteers ventured off to Richard House Childrens Hospice in Beckton. The three volunteers were Stephen Garth, Manjot Rai and Riccardo Ranzato from Hilton London Canary Wharf. . Their mission: to serve wine and cheese supplied by the hotel at a showcase Open Evening held by Richard House. The event was called I am Richard House and was an opportunity for the hospice to display the artwork, photos and short films made by the children and families that are cared for at Richard House. Stephen said: All three of us had a fantastic evening (Manjot in particular enjoyed meeting Professor Umbridge from the Harry Potter films). Riccardo worked the room with charm and professionalism and was a real ambassador for the hotel, whilst I made some good contacts for the planned charity ball for Richard House to be held at our hotel in June. All three of us came away with a real positive attitude from the event and it was good to see where the money we raise at the hotel goes to. What a good way to meet some of the other corporate sponsors of Richard House and see the great work that is done at the hospice.
