SEMESTER 1, 2012 OVERVIEW

WHAT WILL WE BE EXPLORING THIS SEMESTER? READING: Focus on Multi-Literacies; including novels, poetry, newspaper articles and issues response, website analysis, film analysis, critical analysis of advertising HOW WILL WE DO THIS? Students will be in fluid like ability groups in which they will explore novels, newspaper articles, poetry, film and other media.

LITERACY

WRITING:
Narrative (Harris Burdick inspired stories) Debating (environmental issue) Asia education foundation thinking tool. Letter to the editor (environmental issue local/global?) Argumentative essay NAPLAN preparation for two weeks Short Film (Junior Tropfest) Report
Students will plan, draft, conference, edit and complete a specific writing task every two weeks. Tasks will include narratives, reports, recounts and persuasive writing.

SPEAKING AND LISTENING:


Debating, class discussions based on values and linked to Inquiry units of study. Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions in class and whole unit times particularly responding to parking lot NUMBER: Place Value (to millions)- Ordering, numbers lines, patterns, prime & composite, rounding, simple powers, positive & negative Operations with Number- Addition,
Fluid, like ability groupings involved in hands on, practical activities and focused point of need teaching.

INQUIRY LEARNING

Environmental Landcare Investigating local and global conservation issues, and implementing local conservation strategies

Practical investigation of local conservation issue working with water watch to monitor Merri Creek. Research various environmental issues and present their findings and future solutions at 2012 expo.

Media and Persuasion Critically examining the role of the media, and its consequent affect on our world.

Analysis and creation of local and global media.
