She came up with tips on how to be happy in 2012, since it was only the second month of the year. Here are the 4G keys for happiness. 1. Being a cheerful Giver. God loves a cheerful giver. Don't just give what is extra of your time but give something that could hurt
you. Give until it hurts, give until it hurts no more and you will experience deep joy. Do not keep any record of what you give because God does not keep record of what He gives us. Giving is not only about material things, a simple smile can make someone happy. There is always something you can give; like time, talent, patience, understanding and a lot more. 2. Gratefulness. <Employment System for Foreign Workers> Employment Policy (http://www.moel.go.kr/english/topic/employment_policy_view.jsp?&idx=896) Currently, if a foreign worker goes back to his/her home country after the end of his/her employment period, he/she can be re-employed in Korea under the Employment Permit System after six months. In such cases, the foreign worker is not guaranteed a job in his/her previous workplace, let alone re-employment, and is required to go through a Korean language test, employment training and other procedures again. The new amendment requires departing foreign workers to stay in their home countries for at least three months. This requirement is imposed in order to avoid inadvertently meeting the general naturalization requirements (staying in Korea for five consecutive years or more) under Article 5 of the Nationality Act. To re-enter and find employment again in Korea, a foreign worker will have to have worked in a workplace of the type and size determined by the Foreign Workforce Policy Committee in accordance with the amendment for 4 years and 10 months without a change of workplace. (The size and type of business will be determined in a way that will cover workplaces having difficulties in employing native Korean workers, such as those in agricultural, livestock and fishing industries and small manufacturers. A separate public notice will be given of such size and type.)

oreign workers who have worked with integrity in Korea for 4 years and 10 months and then return to their home countries will be allowed to re-enter and find work again in Korea after a lapse of three months since their return. They will also be able to work in the same workplace where they used to work just before departure without having to undergo a Korean language proficiency test or employment training. The government promulgated the amendment to the Act on Foreign Workers Employment, etc., containing these features, on February 1. The amendment will come into effect on July 2, 2012. The amendment will apply to foreign workers whose employment period (4 years and 10 months) will expire after its enforcement date (i.e. Jul. 2, 2012). Any employer who wants his/her foreign worker to re-enter Korea and continue to work in his/her workplace should make an application to the competent job center before the foreign worker leaves Korea. * The application procedure and other details will be prescribed in the subsequent amendments to the relevant Enforcement Decree and Enforcement Regulations. The number of foreign workers who have to return to their home countries as their employment period expires is expected to reach 67,000 this year. Businesses are complaining of losing skilled workers, and some foreign workers are overstaying in Korea illegally. Against this background, the amendment was pursued as a practical alternative. So far, once the quota for foreign workers to be allowed into Korea is set at an adequate level each year, the Ministry of Employment and Labor has brought in new workers to fill the entire quota. However, from now on, it will fill some of the quota with foreign workers whose integrity has been verified under the new

system. The new system is intended to bring in quality foreign workers and encourage those workers to work hard during their employment period without increasing the total number of foreign workers to be introduced. It also aims to help companies keep skilled foreign workers and to reduce the number of illegal foreigners. Meanwhile, the amendment contains changes regarding foreign workers' change of workplace. Up until now, even in case a foreign worker moves to another workplace due to the revocation of an employment permit issued to the employer or any violation of the required working conditions, it has been counted towards the total number of workplace transfers. However, from now on, such a transfer will not be added to the total. * A foreign worker cannot move to another workplace more than three times during his/ her three-year initial employment and more than twice during his/her two-year reemployment. The specific criteria a foreign worker should meet if his/her transfer to another workplace is not to be included in the total number of workplace transfers will be announced by the Minister of Employment and Labor. If we are grounded in God, we will never feel alone. When we are anchored in Him, we will never be in darkness and in Him we can triumph over all our trials. Here are some questions we need to ask ourselves to determine whether we were happy in 2011 or not. Was I a cheerful giver? What degree was my gratefulness? Was I gentle with my words? How grounded was I in God? If we were happy in 2011 then we can continue to be happy in 2012. But if there is something missing, then we could always follow the 4Gs and they could make our life better. Sr. Angel wished everyone a happy 2012. After the talk, the vigil continued with the meditation on the Twin Hearts devotion. An hour of silence in personal prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament followed. By Katherine Deen ilipinos have yet another reason to be proud. Their kababayan, theater actress Cherish Maningat-Bae stood out in the lead role of the recently-concluded tour of Arirang Fantasy a Korean musical staged in Korea. Arirang Fantasy features the ups and downs in the life of a young Filipina widow (played by Cherish) who lives with her motherin-law and nine-year old daughter in Korea. The musical aims to portray the differences between Filipino and Korean culture and bridge the gap that comes from it. It is the first Korean musical to feature a Filipina as lead actress. The role seems to be tailor-made for Cherish, who chanced upon the opportunity to play the part when she learned about the musical from a friend who worked as the musicals costume designer. Cherish, extensive theater training and directorial credits under her belt, was supposed to enter the project as a cultural consultant who advises the cast about the nuances of Philippine culture. But after reading the script (and crying buckets), Cherish was convinced she had to do the musical herself. Not for fame or fortune Fame or fortune was the last thing on her mind when Cherish, who is in Manila for a short vacation, agreed to do Arirang Fantasy. I want to do something for the Filipinas in Korea. I want to uplift their image because I am also a part of the Filipino wives in Korea (she married a Korean). There, our image is really not that good. There is a lot of negative media coverage and I felt like I want to help so I talked to the director and the staff. I told them I really wanted to do it. I gave them my reason for wanting to do it and I told them I am really passionate about it. The director didnt even audition Cherish. He offered her the role as an understudy for 10 of the 40 shows. But that was only for starters. The talented Filipina ended up headlining the musical after the original lead actress was relieved for certain performance issues. Adjusting to Korean work culture Working with a predominantly Korean cast and crew has been a learning experience for Cherish. She shared that one of the reasons why Arirang Fantasy became so successful was her chemistry with the lead actor. Since it was a traveling musical, the lead actor, a popular comedian, threw impromptu lines at her during performances. Cherish proudly said that even if I am not Korean, I was able to catch up with him. I knew how to deal with his adlibs. That is why our play was fun. Working on the musical was not a bed of roses, though. Cherish notes: What is most difficult for me is that it was so comfortable for them to work with me that they sometimes forget that I am
not Korean. They think why dont you know how to relate to us? Sometimes they get angry. She recalled how she cried after she was scolded for sitting on her make-up chair ahead of the Korean seniors. She shared that I didnt know that the seniors have to find their places first. If you sit down first, youre thought of as rude. Cherish the true-blue Filipina was not accustomed to this Korean cultural nuance. There were a lot of instances, not just this one -- from rehearsals to the performances -where they thought I made a lot of mistakes but they were not really mistakes, adds Cherish. She shared that their director had to remind the actors about their cultural differences to promote understanding among cast members. Breaking misconceptions about Filipinas HerArirang Fantasy experience has made Cherish more concerned about our kababayans in Korea. She explains, Before the musical, I just felt that I wanted to help them. But now, I want to help them because I can see myself in them. I want them to experience what I am experiencing right now. Im happy. I love my husband and I love his family and Im really working hard to make the relationship work and to make the family relationship work. If they only knew how to deal with the mother-in-law and fatherin-law, then it will be a lot easier. If we adapt to them [Korean] first, it will be a lot easier. I want to help them through that and maybe not just in this musical but even in another line of work. To further dispel the Filipinos negative image and bridge cultural gaps, Cherish injects Filipino lines and even sang Freddie Aguilars Anak in Arirang Fantasy. Plans to go international Cherish will return to Korea to continue work on Arirang Fantasy. The musical, originally sponsored by the Korean Racing Authority, will continue its run, this time on a larger scale. The show will now be funded by the Korean government itself. They want us to go international tooif they will have their own national musical, they want to make it Arirang because Arirang is like their national song, so Arirang Fantasy. If London has Miss Saigon, Korea has Arirang, says Cherish. Indeed, Cherish is proudly carrying the Filipino flag in Korea and she welcomes the task. She is happy to be the first Filipina cast in the lead role of Koreas first big-scale musical. And she appreciates all the support her kababayans are giving her. Im really really very thankful because they recognize me as someone who will uplift our image abroad which is really very important because there are many negative news and I want to be part of those who uplift Filipinos all over the world, Cherish states.

Ministries split over plan on Filipino babysitters
By Lee Hyo-sik any Korean women quit their jobs after giving birth in the face of a range of difficulties in raising children while working at the same time. A shortage of decent childcare facilities, among other factors, makes working moms refrain from having more babies or end up staying home to raise their children. To boost the nations falling birthrates and encourage more women to participate in economic activities, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance is considering bringing Filipino women into the country to employ them as babysitters. Many working mothers seem to welcome the governments latest move, saying it will help them find suitable babysitters at lower costs. Lukewarm attitude from other ministries However, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and the Ministry of Justice have shown a lukewarm response, arguing there are already plenty of foreign and Korean women willing to work as babysitters. The labor ministry said if the country brings in Filipinos, it will take away jobs from those employed in childcare. To allow Filipinos to work as babysitters, the government will issue them new types of visas, according to officials from the ministry. The finance ministry said Tuesday that it has begun looking into the issue. We have just started studying the introduction of babysitters from the Philippines as part of efforts to raise Koreas record-low birthrate and prompt more married women to take part in economic activities, said Kim Jae-hwan, director of the ministrys competitiveness strategy division. Hong Kong and Singapore have invited hundreds of thousands of women from the Philippines and allow them to care for babies of their citizens. This has helped women there keep their jobs while raising young children. About 300,000 Filipino women currently reside in Hong Kong working as babysitters. They are known to receive around $500 a month and are given a day off each week. Filipino babysitters are credited for helping women in the two city states continue to work after giving birth. But in Korea, many married women were forced to make a choice between work and childcare, due to a lack of decent and affordable facilities, the director said. If the government provides a pool of decent babysitters from overseas, this could encourage more Korean women to continue their professional careers. In 2011, only 53.7 percent of women here aged between 30 and 39 were found to be employed, substantially lower than 89.8 percent for men in the same age bracket. Currently, about 200,000 middle-aged Koreans and ethnic Koreans from mainland China with H-2 visas are estimated to work as babysitters. Cruz at his embassy on Friday (Kirsty Taylor/The Korea Herald) The Philippine ambassador has welcomed revised laws to help migrant workers renew their employment contracts here, but has also called for amnesty for those who have already overstayed their visas. While Luis T. Cruz said South Korea and the Philippines shared the common goal of the rights and welfare of the workers, he also called for further improvements to the law on Koreas Employment Permit System. EPS allows Korean employers to hire temporary foreign workers for jobs they have not been able to fill locally. Ambassador Cruz and diplomats from six other embassies this month thanked Korean lawmaker Kang Sung-chun for his work to ease the rules for foreigners wishing to be rehired after finishing contracts with companies here. From this July, the revised EPS laws will allow migrant workers to return to Korea for new work after three months rather than the current six as long as they have met a series of conditions during their time here. To qualify, they cannot have transferred jobs in Korea without justifiable cause and there must still be a labor shortage in the sector they were working in. They must also sign a new employment contract before coming back. Returning workers will also no longer have to repeat the entry requirement of a Korean language test under the revision. As of last year, Korea has employed more than 278,000 foreign workers from 15 countries including 24,000 from the Philippines under EPS accommodating more than 50 percent of the Filipinos in the country. They were employed in the manufacturing, construction, agriculture and fisheries sectors. But the Philippine Embassy has requested more jobs for its workers in manufacturing, as work in this sector tends to be less arduous than in the other fields. Call for amnesty Cruz also requested that the Korean government change its practice of calling those working past their visa expiry dates illegal. Migrant workers length of stay is currently limited to 4 years and 10 months to avoid them reaching the five year mark that would qualify them for permanent residence status. The Korean Immigration Service said there were 11,863 so-called illegal workers here as of December 2011, but Cruz asked for them to be termed irregular workers instead. ts the second month of the year...when Christmas dcor are quickly thrown away or stored in the warehouse and Valentines trimmings replace them in shopping malls and boutiques. Love stories abound. But here is a love story that is hard to forget. Thomas Crum has a story to tell. In his book entitled Journey to Center he describes his own personal encounter with a great love story. A story of unending love and undying commitment. One evening I found myself at a conference in Washington, D.C. And as fate would have it [inventor] Bucky Fuller happened to be making a presentation that evening at another conference in the very same hotel. I got to the ballroom in time to hear the end of Bucks lecture. I was in awe of this little man in his eighties, with his dear mind, deep wisdom and boundless energy. At the end of the talk, we walked together through the underground parking lot to his airport limousine. Ive got to go to New York City tonight for another presentation, he said, looking at me with an anxiousness that I had rarely seen in Bucky. You know, Annies not doing well. Im very concerned about her. We hugged. Bucky Fuller had once confided to me that he had promised his wife Annie to die before she did, so that he could be there to welcome her when it was her turn. I took the comment as a hope, not a commitment. Which shows how greatly I underestimated Buckminster Fuller. Shortly after Buckys presentation in New York, he was informed that Annie had lapsed into a coma in a hospital in Los Angeles. Doctors felt that there was a good chance she would not regain consciousness. Bucky took the first flight he could get. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, he went immediately to Annes bedside. Sitting beside her, he closed his eyes. And quietly died. (From Bits and Pieces, 18 June 1998) Man, oh man! Talk about love. Talk about commitment. How did he die? I dont know, dont ask me. The story didnt say. What was the cause of death? I dont know, dont ask me. Its no longer important. But its one of the most touching love stories I have ever read. What makes it so touching? Think about it. Is it the romance? I dont think so. Its all about commitment isnt it? Todays understanding of love and romance is so cheap and shallow its no longer funny. Boy meets girl, arms lock in an embrace, passionate kissing, hugging. Against a scenic backdrop, boy runs arms outstretched and girl does the same, they meet, embrace, roll on the sand with the golden sun slowly setting in the horizon. Cheap. Again, I say its cheap. Happens only in the movies. Real love is about commitment. Real love is hanging in there when the pay envelope stops, when sickness takes over health, and when the situation goes from difficult to impossible. Real love is all about integrity. It takes more than romance to have this. Romance is cheap; commitment is priceless. Love keeps on going even when times are tough. Both husband and wife have to know this. So the pink slip comes, youre laid off from your job. Both of you hang in there. So the doctors pronouncement confirms that which you dread. Hes confined to the wheelchair for the rest of his life. You hold hands and hang in there. So the business goes down the drain and the debts pile up. You hold hands and hang in there. Thats what love is all about. One day, a husband comes home thoroughly shaken and depressed. He says, Im sorry, sweetheart. Theyve let me go. I dont have a job anymore. Were poor and we dont have money. His wife holds his hands and says, But youre wrong, my love. Were rich! The money will come later! Now, thats love. Let me give you another example of what love is. Its got something to do with three words. The three words are It is finished! From the mouth of the Savior. Thats Gods love when He gave Himself up for us. He didnt bail out, He hung in there. In fact, He hung on a cross. Thats why this is called the Greatest Love Story of All Time.

Lesson Three: One Sacrifice for All Time

D. Representing the Cross Then how can we call the Mass a sacrifice? We can say that the Mass is a sacrifice because Christ instituted the Eucharist to make that final sacrifice available to us for all time. Christ is not sacrificed again in the Mass. But because Christ is really present in the Eucharist, the Mass is a participation in His one great sacrifice. The Mass re-presents that sacrifice, making it present to us and us part of it. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross cannot happen again because it is still happening today in the Eucharist. The sacrifice is eternal, and every Mass is part of it. Notice the difference between "representing" and "representing." In modern English, to say that one thing "represents" another usually means that the first thing stands for the second. A word represents the thing it names, and an elected official represents the people who elect him. But the word is not the thing, and the elected official is not the people. When we say that the Mass "re-presents" the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, however, we go back to the root meaning of the word. The Mass presents that sacrifice again, making it present to us right now. All over the world, wherever the Eucharist is being celebrated, Gods people are present at the one eternal sacrifice of the Lamb. E. Priests Offering Sacrifice Each member of Gods people has been made a member of the "holy priesthood" of the Church (see 1 Peter 2:4-5,9; Revelation 1:6) as Israel was once called "a kingdom of priests" (see Exodus 19:6) Each of us is called to "offer spiritual sacrifices" (see 1 Peter 2:4-5). As Christ offered himself on the cross, we are called to offer our own bodies, our own lives in the Mass. United to Christ in baptism, we share in his priesthood. With him, we also offer ourselves as a sacrifice. "I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship" (see Romans 12:1). And in this spiritual worship we are united with all Christians everywhere who celebrate the same sacrament. We are also united with all the saints in heaven - all Christians, across time, sharing in one perfect sacrifice. In fact, the Mass is heaven on earth, not figuratively but literally. That will be the subject of the next lesson: the surprising, even astonishing fact that, wherever Mass is being celebrated, heaven is there right now.
Why did Christian and Jewish interpreters conclude that Isaac must have gone willingly to his own sacrifice? Why is it significant that Pilate sent Jesus to His death at "about noon" on the day of preparation? To what Old Testament sacrifice do Jesus words "my blood of the covenant" refer? Why does John take such care to point out that none of Jesus bones were broken? How many times is the sacrifice of Christ offered? What is the difference between "representing" and "re-presenting" Christs sacrifice? For personal reflection: Do you remember the story of the first Passover? (See Exodus 12.) At Sunday Mass, try relating the Passover - the salvation of Israels firstborn - to the drama of salvation being enacted in front of you. Do you "discern the body" in the Eucharist? Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 again. Consider reading the Passion narrative in John, especially John 19:13-37, as a preparation before Mass.

A. The Lord Be With You "The Lord be with you," the priest prays at the very beginning of our Mass. "And also with you," we respond. It's a prayer of petition and at the same time it's a statement of fact. It's a petition in that we're asking that the Lord be with us as we worship. And it's a statement of fact in that we acknowledge that our prayer has already been answered. Jesus Christ promised to be with us when we gather in His name (see Matthew 18:20), and in the Mass He keeps His promise. Jesus Christ is truly present to us in the Eucharist. But the Word of God (see John 1:1) is also truly present to us in the Scripture readings of the Liturgy of the Word. Indeed, the Liturgy of the Word is a To be continued
communion with the Word of God, just as the Liturgy of the Eucharist brings us into communion with the body and blood of Christ. As Christ comes to us in bread and wine, He comes to us, too, in the Word proclaimed to us in sacred Scripture. In the Liturgy of the Word, we hear the story of our salvation - all the great events of salvation history, told to us and explained to us. And in the Liturgy of the Eucharist, through our communion with Christ in the bread and wine, we are joined to that story of salvation. Our individual stories become a part of His story, the story of the salvation of the world, which reached its climax in His death and resurrection - which He has called us to remember in the Mass. B. The Word on the Road In our celebration of the Liturgy of the Word before the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we are following not only the biblical command of Christ, but the example He gives us in Scripture. Remember the story of the road to Emmaus in Luke (see Luke 24:18-35)? Two of Jesus followers, walking from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, meet the resurrected Christ himself on the way - but in their grief and confusion over the His death, they fail to recognize Him. As they walk, Christ interprets the Scriptures to them, showing them how Moses and the prophets foretold that all these things must happen to the Christ. Arriving at Emmaus, they share a meal. But this is no ordinary meal. Recall the scene carefully. Notice Lukes deliberate use of the same words used in his Last Supper narrative: At table, Jesus takes . . . blesses . . . breaks . . . and gives the bread (compare Luke 22:14-20). As we said in our first lesson, Luke is giving us a picture of the Eucharist, the first to be celebrated after the Resurrection. Notice the two-fold pattern: the Word of God is proclaimed, followed by the breaking of the bread. This, we recognize, is the pattern of the Mass. First, the followers of Christ hear the word of God interpreted in the light of the Gospel (see Luke 24:27). Jesus explains how the Scriptures teach the truth about Him, how all of salvation history was leading to the events His followers had just witnessed. This is what happens in our Liturgy of the Word. We hear readings from the Old Testament and the New, carefully chosen by the Church to illuminate one another. We see how the promises of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New, and how the New Testament sheds light on the mysteries of the Old. With this preparation, we then approach the Eucharistic table. And in the breaking of the bread, we are brought into communion with the very mysteries of salvation history that we heard proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word. Thats why every time Scripture is read in the Mass, we make a confession of faith followed by an act of gratitude: "This is the Word of the Lord..Thanks be to God!"

We are talking about giving the employer and the employee who have formed a bond the opportunity to let the working relationship flourish such bonds cannot be aptly captured or maximized by designations of age ceilings. Short-term employment visas that have to be periodically renewed can be used, he said. Room for improvement Complaints from Filipino workers had included delayed salaries, misrepresented contracts and physically or verbally abusive bosses or colleagues. He said that Filipino workers biggest challenges here were language barriers, weather and loneliness as the E-9 visa often does not allow them to bring their spouse or dependants with them to Korea. However, Cruz also repeated the Korean Governments request that migrant workers obey the law here and honor the terms of their contracts, calling the EPS among the best government-to-government arrangements on labor that I have encountered. Koreas seven-year old EPS won a U.N. public service award last year, and has been revised nine times since its inception. The Philippines was the first country to pilot the system in 2004. Now it opens up Korean jobs to migrants from 15 countries. Today, there are more than 8 million Filipinos working abroad in about 180 destinations, who collectively sent home $24 billion last year. The Philippine Embassy in Seoul offers training in areas such as personal financial management to help foreign workers make the most of their time here and plan for their return home and will hold its 17th annual Migrant Workers Day celebration in June. Well over 1,000 Filipino people attended the last event which took place on a floating stage in Yeouido Hanggang Park.

Ash Wednesday
sh Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. Why we receive the ashes Following the example of the Nine vites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told "Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return." Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distribution of ashes was followed by a penitential procession. The Ashes The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance. Ritual At Masses and services of worship on this day, ashes are imposed on the foreheads of the faithful (or on the tonsure spots, in the case of some clergy). The priest, minister, or in some cases officiating layperson, marks the forehead of each participant with black ashes in the sign of the cross, which the worshipper traditionally retains until it wears off. The act echoes the ancient Near Eastern tradition of throwing
ashes over one's head to signify repentance before God (as related in the Bible). The priest or minister says one or both of the following when applying the ashes: Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return. Genesis 3:19 Mark 1:15 The imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday The liturgical imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday is a sacramental, not a sacrament, and in the Catholic understanding of the term the ashes themselves are also a sacramental. The ashes are blessed according to various rites proper to each liturgical tradition, sometimes involving the use of Holy Water. In some churches, they are mixed with a small amount of water[9] or olive oil,[10] which serve as a fixative. In most liturgies for Ash Wednesday, the Penitential psalms are read; Psalm 51 (LXX Psalm 50) is especially associated with this day. [11] The service also often includes a corporate confession rite. In some of the low church traditions, other practices are sometimes added or substituted, as other ways of symbolizing the confession and penitence of the day. For example, in one common variation, small cards are distributed to the congregation on which people are invited to write a sin they wish to confess. These small cards are brought forth to the altar table where they are burned.[12] In the Catholic Church, ashes, being sacramentals, may be given to anyone who wishes to receive them,[13][14] as opposed to Catholic sacraments, which are generally reserved for church members, except in cases of grave necessity.[15][16] Similarly, in other Christian denominations ashes may be received by all who profess the Christian faith and are baptized. [17] In the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is observed by fasting, abstinence from meat, and repentancea day of contemplating one's transgressions. The Anglican Book of Common Prayer also designates Ash Wednesday as a day of fasting. In the medieval period, Ash Wednesday was the required annual day of penitential confession occurring after fasting and the remittance of the tithe. In other Christian denominations these practices are optional, with the main focus being on repentance. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 (whose health enables them to do so) are permitted to consume only one full meal, which may be supplemented by two smaller meals, which together should not equal the full meal. Some Catholics will go beyond the minimum obligations demanded by the Church and undertake a complete fast or a bread and water fast. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are also days of abstinence from meat (mammals and fowl), as are all Fridays during Lent.[18] Some Catholics continue fasting throughout Lent,[citation needed] as was the Church's traditional re-
quirement,[19] concluding only after the celebration of the Easter Vigil. As the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday comes the day after Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), the last day of the Carnival season. Biblical significance Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job 42:36. Job says to God: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. The other eye wandereth of its own accord. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." (vv. 56, KJV) The prophet Jeremiah, for example, calls for repentance this way: "O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes" (Jer 6:26). The prophet Daniel recounted pleading to God this way: "I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes" (Daniel 9:3). Just prior to the New Testament period, the rebels fighting for Jewish independence, the Maccabees, prepared for battle using ashes: "That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes" (1 Maccabees 3:47; see also 4:39). Other examples are found in several other books of the Bible including, Numbers 19:9, 19:17, Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21, and Luke 10:13, and Hebrews 9:13. Ezekiel 9 also speaks of a linen-clad messenger marking the forehead of the city inhabitants that have sorrow over the sins of the people. All those without the mark are destroyed. It marks the start of a 43-day period which is an allusion to the separation of Jesus in the desert to fast and pray. During this time he was tempted. Matthew 4:111, Mark 1:1213, and Luke 4:113.[20] While not specifically instituted in the Bible text, the 40-day period of repentance is also analogous to the 40 days during which Moses repented and fasted in response to the making of the Golden calf. (Jews today follow a 40-day period of repenting during the High Holy Days from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur.) In Victorian England, theatres refrained from presenting costumed shows on Ash Wednesday, so they provided other entertainments.[citation needed]

Every wednesday there is a Novena mass going on at the first floor of the Philippine Center. It usually starts at 8:00 pm with a prayer of the Holy Rosary, followed by the Novena to the Mother of Perpetual Help and the Holy Mass. Before the Holy Mass, Fr. Arvin Mosqueda, MSP blessed the new altar in the Philippine Center. Fr. Alvin Parantar, MSP, HFCC chaplain, said they wanted to make the center a place that is conducive to prayer. Since it is lenten season, HFCC volunteers and church goers would want to find a serene and quiet place where they could pray and talk to God. During the Holy Mass, there was a blessing of ashes that will be used for the celebration of Ash Wednesday. OAV Registration Ongoing at the Philippine Embassy Filipinos in South Korea who intend to vote here for the senatorial and party-list elections in May 2013 are reminded to register as overseas absentee voters at the Philippine Embassy in Seoul. Registration started on 2 November 2011 and will continue until 31 October 2012. Registration is available from Monday to Friday during regular office hours, except during declared holidays. Filipinos may also register every first and third Sunday of the month, coinciding with the special service for passport renewals in the morning. Although the registration period is for one year, I encourage everyone to register early and not to wait until the last minute to have their names included in the roster of those eligible to vote in 2013, said Amb. Luis Cruz. This will prevent potential problems associated with rushed applications, he added. Registrants only need to present a valid proof of Philippine citizenship, such as a passport. Those who intend to change their voting places in 2013, such as those returning for good to the Philippines, can also have their records transferred by the Philippine Embassy. HFCC Outreach For Flood Victims in Iligan

HFCC sent relief goods to Typhoon Sendong victims in Iligan City last December 28, 2011. Beddings, cooking pots and food were distributed to 500 families at the evacuation center in Bo. Luinab, Iligan City.
