Ultrasonic Testing of Welded Joints Project

Ultasonic Testing of Welded Joints

Statement of Project:
There is welded joint needs to be tested by ultrasonic for any defects in it such as porosity, slag inclusions, lack of side-wall fusion, lack of inter-run fusion, lack of root penetration, undercutting, and longitudinal or transverse cracks. This welded joint should be tested accurately and should be reported well for the customer. So, We tested it as you will see later in our document.

Tips of the project:

This device is [ USIP 12 ] which is used as a weldseam examination unit. It has excellent resolution which is dependent on the Frequency; from 1 to 100 MHZ. This Krautkrmer ultrasonic unit is capable of roughly detecting faults 030"diameter in steel up to 1"thick. The Maximum is a 22"-diamiter and the maximum height that can be covered is 12". Signal converter: .750", 5.0 MHZ, 6"-Focus, (high resolution) .375", 10.0 MHZ, 3"Focus, (high resolution).

This is the welded joint, that we tested it. It s material is steel ST 35.

Ultrasonic Testing of Welded Joints Project

It is a butt welded joint and we want to find defects in the welding and any cracks in the plat.

These are calibration blocks. On the left is calibration block K1. On the right is calibration block K2.

This is the screen of the weldseam examination unit. The display of this screen is A-scan display. From the wave appeared on the screen, we can know the attenuation and the scale value of the received wave. And by doing some calculations it is able to determine the position of the defect accurately.
