Informal assessment: During the instructional unit, students will be asked during the lectures for answers to questions, and asked how to do something we have been talking about in class to make sure that they know what they are doing. Another way that I will be informally assessing them is by asking a student to come to the white board and write their answer on the board, this will allow me to see how this one student is doing and then by asking the class if the student is correct how they are doing. If the student was incorrect I will ask the class how to fix the students mistakes to help the student as well as anyone else that had the same mistake. Lastly, when the students have work time I will be walking around the classroom making sure everyone is on task and making sure they are not having any issues with the assignment. Validity/Reliability: Validity is the inferences we can make based on the test results. The test, quiz, and product/performance assessment are all valid due to the fact that all the material in the different assessments are covered during the lecture and instructional unit plan. Reliability is the consistency of the assessment results. The different types of assessment will be tested for reliability after the students have taken the test by seeing the results of the assessment. If the students show knowledge of the material, sufficient to their knowledge, I will know that the types of assessment are reliable. Having both validity and reliability is important in making assessment. If you dont have both you wont know if your assessment is actually assessing what it is supposed to be assessing and if it is covering what you want it to, based on your instructional unit plan.

Fill-in-the-blank (2 points each): read the statement and then decide which word will fill-in-the-blank.
1. A straight line that cuts a curve into 2 or more points is a _____Secant_____

line. 2. A straight line that touches a curve at a point, but if extended does not cross the curve at that point is a _____Tangent_____ line. 3. __Differentiation__ is the process of finding the derivative of a function.
Fill-in-the-blank grading: There can only be one answer as they are definitions. Spelling is not graded but the teacher must be able to know what the student was trying to get at, each is worth two points.

Short answer (2 points each): answer the following questions in a few sentences.

What is the equation for the definition of the derivative? Explain the meaning. f (x + Dx) - f (x) f '(x) = Dx 0 lim Dx This equation helps you to find the derivative of a function using limits. The process represented by the equation shows that one is taking a secant line of a curve and reducing the distance between the points of intersection until the secant line hits the curve only once and becomes a tangent line at a certain point. Explain what information about a graph you can find from the derivative of the function. From the derivative of a function, one can find when the graph of the function is increasing and when the graph of the function is decreasing. You can do this by finding when the derivative is positive and negative, respectively. Also, from the derivative of a function, you can find the tangent line at any point.
Short answer grading: question 1. One point is given for the correct definition of the derivative. The other point is for the explanation. The explanation must make sense and answer the question, and must include the word tangent line. Question 2. Answer must make sense and answer the question. Must include phrases like increasing, decreasing, positive, negative in the correct manner.

Test (25 points) Multiple choice (1 point each): Read each question and answer by placing the letter corresponding to the correct choice in the blank space. Unclear answers will be marked as incorrect.

Essay (5 points each): answer the following essay questions as fully as possible in a short paragraph. Spelling and mechanics will not be graded. Show that the derivative of sin(x) equals cos(x) with the definition of the derivative, and explain what it means. d sin(x + h) - sin(x) sin(x) = lim h 0 dx h d sin(x)cos(h) + cos(x)sin(h) - sin(x) sin(x) = lim h 0 dx h d sin(x)cos(h) - sin(x) cos(x)sin(h) sin(x) = lim + lim h 0 h 0 dx h h d cos(h) - 1 sin(h) sin(x) = sin(x) lim + cos(x) lim h 0 h 0 dx h h d [cos(h) - 1][cos(h) - 1] sin(h) sin(x) = sin(x) lim + cos(x) lim h 0 h 0 dx h[cos(h) - 1] h d cos 2 (h) - 1 sin(h) sin(x) = sin(x) lim + cos(x) lim h 0 h 0 dx h[cos(h) + 1] h d - sin 2 (h) sin(h) sin(x) = sin(x) lim + cos(x) lim h 0 h 0 dx h[cos(h) + 1] h sin(h) d 1 sin(h) sin(x) = [sin(x) lim- sin(h)]lim lim h 0 cos(h) + 1+ cos(x) lim h h 0 h 0 h 0 h dx 1 d sin(x) = sin(x)(0)(1) + cos(x)(1) 2 dx d sin(x) = cos(x) dx The derivative of a function gives the rate of change of the function. That is, it gives the slope. With cos(x) being the derivative of sin(x), cos(x) is the rate of change of sin(x) or the slope of sin(x).

Explain in a few sentences how to use the chain rule for derivatives. Begin by taking the derivative of the outermost function (this typically means bringing down a power using the general power rule) and leave the inner functions inside the outer function how they were originally. Then, you multiply the new function by the derivative of the inner function. If there is more than one inner function use the chain rule again beginning with the outermost function and moving in.
Rubric for grading essay questions Each question is worth 5 points Question 1. In steps for showing the derivative of sin(x) = cos(x) must have the symbols d/dx and lim throughout the entire equation where necessary, take one point away notation is missing anywhere but only one point no more. Correctly show that sin(x) = cos(x) using the definition of the derivative, worth two points. Explanation is worth two points, must include the phrase rate of change, also must make sense when explaining derivative. Question 2. Explanation is worth three points judged at teachers discretion, must make sense and answer the question. One point for stating inner function and one point for stating outer function.
