INTRODUCTION
] Simply, speaking management is what managers do, however this simple statement doesnt tell us much, and we define management as the process of co-ordinate work activities. Really, a business enterprise has a wide variety of functions and areas for achieving its objective. It is very difficult and high risks involved in co-ordinate the functions according to their objective or simply manage the business. Here the relevance of management and its functions arises. The French industrialist Henry Foyol proposed five functions of management such as planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Henry foyol defined management as to manage is to forecast and to plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control. Many other managerial experts like George R Terry, Louise A Allen, and Harold Knootz etc defined management in different ways. In order to understand the practicability of management or managerial function, we visited a well established business enterprise namely Malabar Modern Rice Mill and collected information through interview and observation.

We drawn the matter of project by simple language and we can assure a careful reading of this project will help you a basic idea of managerial functions.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY


Management plays a vital role in the modern business world. It is the motivating and guidance force, which helps the organization to grow with prosperity. The importance of management has increased tremendously in the modern world. While the managerial function will be the same for all type of organizations and at all levels in any organization, the business functions or activities will vary according to the out put desired to achieve and input required to be used. For example, in a trading organization, business functions will be buying and merchandising, finance and accounting, establishment, sales, security and general administration. The business function of a college will comprise admissions, teaching and curriculum development, accounting and fund management, staff establishment, hostel, residence and messing, property maintenance and expansion etc. As commerce students our study on managerial functions by visiting a firm have a wide scope and importance to understand its practicability.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY


To get a basic idea about management and managerial functions To observe the managerial functions of firm. To find out the differences in theory and practical of managerial function, if there have any. To know the benefit of managerial function. To get practice in data collection and interview.

METHODOLOGY OF DATA COLLECTION


Source of Data
Source of information are generally categorized as primary, secondary, and tertiary depending on their originality and their proximity to the source or origin. The required data was collected both from primary and secondary sources. The primary data was collected through field survey to the manager of Malabar modern rice mill and through observation. The secondary data was collected from magazines, journals etc.

Study plan
This study done by visiting and observing a manufacturing firm named Malabar modern rice mill and it is located in kizhakkoth which is 28 Kilo meters away from Calicut railway station. We done an interview to Manager of that firm and collect the required information.

Field Work
Surveys are used to collect quantitative Information about items in a population. Surveys of human population and institutions are common in political polling and govt, health, social science and marketing research. A survey may focus on opinions or factual information depending on its purpose and many surveys involves administering question to individuals. When the questions are administered by a researcher the survey in called structured interview or a research administered survey. When the questions are administered by the respondent the survey in referred to as a questionnaires self administered survey. The survey was conducted by personally interviewing of manager of Malabar modern rice mill.

FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT
The management of business firm or enterprises consists in guiding and directing its operation towards fulfillment of its objectives. Management is a critical factor in business operations. That is responsible for the utilization of resources through proper

planning, direction and supervision its the functions of those responsible for the management of a firm to lay down objectives and policies for the firm. Plan its operation, organize the resources and allocate duties among the staff. Issue, direction, guide and Coordinate their work and check the operations to make sure that these contributions effectively utilized to realize those objectives. According to George R Terry Management is a distinct process consist of planning, organizing actuating and controlling performed to determine and accomplish the objectives by the use of people and resources. Luther Gullick described the functions of management as PODSCORB.That is P for Planning, O for organizing, and D for directing S for staffing, CO for Co co-ordinate, and R for reporting B for budgeting. The principal functions of management in most of business and non business enterprise:PLANNING It involves deciding in advance what to do, when to do it, where to do it, how to do it, who is do it and how the results are to be evaluated. It includes forecasting, formulation of objectives, policies, programs, schedules, procedures and budgets. ORGANISING

After the planning process, the people in the organization have to be organized to achieve the objectives. A relationship should be established among the members of the organization. It is continuous process. It involves the determination of future course of action, and laying down the sequence of actions to accomplish the objectives. Planning is a bridge between the present and future, it has been called the primary management function. According to H.Knootz and O.Donnel planning is an intellectual process, the conscious determination of the course of action taking of decisions on purpose, knowledge and considered estimates Fayol pointed out the plan of action is at one and same time the result envisaged the line of action is to follow the stages to go through and method to use. It is kind of future picture where in proximate events are outlined with distinctness. Planning is thinking in advance what is to be done. It is intellectual process. ORGANISING Organizing is an essential activity in management. Organizing is the determining; grouping and arranging of various activities deemed Necessary for the attainment of objectives. Organizing is the creation of a proper structure of duties and functions for the attainment objectives of concern. The organization structure consists of a series of relationship at all level of authority. According to Knoots and ODonnel Organizing involves the grouping of activities necessary to accomplish goals and plans, the assignment of these activities to appropriate departments and the provision for the authority delegation and co-ordination.

STAFFING Management consists in getting things done through people. Every organization requires resources for the achievement of goalsthe resources Include men, materials, machines and money. Men are the most important resources in all organizations. These resources are to be planned, recruited, selected, properly trained, appraised and remunerated. Staffing function deals with all these aspects. Staffing is the process of obtaining capable and competent people to fill all position from top management to operative management. Job analysis According to Edwin B.Flippo Job analysis is the process of studying and collecting information relating to the operation and responsibilities of a specific job Man power planning Gordon Mc Beth opines Manpower planning involves two stages. The first stage is concerned with the detailed planning of manpower requirements for all types and level of employees throughout the period of the plan and the second stage is concerned with the right type of people from all sources to meet the planned requirement Recruitment and selection. According to Edwin B Flippo Recruitment is the process of searching for prospective employees and stimulating them to apply for job in the organization. In the words of Dale Yoder Selection is the process in which candidates for employment are divided in to two classes those who are to be offered employment and those who are not. DIRECTING Direction is concerned with directing the human efforts towards the achievement of organizational goals. It is one of the important functions of management. It begins after the function of planning, organizing and staffing function.

Directing was identified by Hendry fayol as the function of command in modern times. The following aspects of this important managerial function are usually identified Leadership Communication Motivation Supervision According to Knootz and Donnel Leadership may be defines as the ability to exert interpersonal influence by means of communication towards the achievements of goals According to Keith Davis Communication is the process passing information and understanding from one person to another Edwin B Flippo defines motivation is the process of attempting to influence other to do their work through the possibility of gain on reward According to R C Davis it is the function of assuring that the works being done in accordance with the plan and instruction

CONTROLLING
Managerial function like planning, organizing, staffing and directing are concerned with getting the work done so as realize organizational objectives. The controlling function ensures that the work is performed properly and results are achieved as desired. With out controlling a managers job is not completed.

Company Profile
Malabar modern rice mill was established by a manufacturing firm of youngsters with the aim of doing business the right way. From its inception as a small firm primarily deals with production of rice. Due to the technology Malabar modern rice mill has grown into a multi-faceted business venture ranging from production to marketing, import and export. The primary focus area of Malabar modern rice Mill is import raw material from other states and the marketing of rice to their customers. Malabar modern rice mill focus on manufacturing and supply rice with the aim to grab the leadership position in market. PRODUCT PROFILE Rice is the main product of Malabar modern rice mill and it named Mangalya Rice. It uses high technological machines for

sorting and packing with a view to supply quality products in to market.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION


Data analysis is the act of transforming data with the aim of extracting useful information and facilitating conclusion. Depending on the type of data and the question, this might include application of statistical methods, curve fitting, selecting or discarding certain subsets based on specific criteria or other techniques. Interpretation simultaneously (Known is as the process establishing either or simultaneous interpretation)

consecutively, oral or gesture communications between two or more speakers who are not able to use the same set of symbols. This task of analysis and interpretation is the major task of our project, here we analysis the information collected from the

manager of Malabar modern rice mill, following are the method how we are doing analysis and interpretation. STUDY PATTERN The pattern of Managerial functions is taken to analyze the collected data that is planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.

Planning Planning is deciding in advance what is to be done. It is determination of course of action to achieve a desired result. Malabar modern rice mill has different types of planning. Short range plans: Generally, it period extend up to one year. This plan related to working capital, pricing, depreciation of machines and vehicles, supply of goods, budget etc. Medium range plans: This plan is extended up to period of 5 years. In this plan include welfare activities, road repairing, employees bonus etc Long range plans: These extend beyond 5 years and often are 10 or 20 years. This includes plans relating to availability of fund & materials, management by objective, building and plant, expansion of business etc.

Organizing The function of organizing proper is the creation of a structure of duties and functions for the attainment of the objectives of the concern. Malabar modern rice mill divide the activities in to various department for the attainment of objectives and they followed the system of line-and-staff system.

Malabar modern rice mill mostly select their workers from Tamilnadu and Karnataka. Some workers replaced due inefficient after looking of six months. They select employees and give training and guidance for developing greater responsibility to work. The firm gives adequate and reasonable compensation to them.

Directing Management is essentially the art and process of getting things done. The managers have, therefore, the responsibility not only of planning and organizing the operations but also guiding and supervising the subordinates. This is the managerial function of direction. Malabar modern rice mill appointed a leader of workers and he guides the workers to attain the objectives. He also acts as a communicator between manager and workers. One manager is supervising their activities and gives motivation to them. They gets reasonable work interval. Controlling Controlling is ordinarily understood as giving of orders or restricting but properly speaking, it means guide something or somebody in the direction in which it is intended to go.

Malabar modern rice mill control their activities on the basis of planning and it has a well established control in their activities.

Interpretation
As the analysis of managerial functions of Malabar modern rice mill we could find that their management is very success and we also understand the role playing management in an organization. With out proper management an organization cannot success. All the above analyze indicates that Malabar modern rice mill have proper planning includes short range plans, medium range plans and long range plans, systematic organization as line and staff system, good selection of employees with the criteria of efficiency and willingness etc, efficient direction by effective leading, communicating and supervising the work and the process of overall controlling effectively. They use modern style of managing and coordinate all activities to attain the objectives.

SWOT ANALYS
The SWOT-Analysis is one of the most common strategic management models. According to Mintzberg, the SWOT originates from the so-called Design-School, which seeks to establish a fit between an organizations strengths and weaknesses with the opportunities and threats in its external environment. The SWOT compiles the most important results from the analysis of external drivers and the analysis internal competences of an organization. The objective of the SWOT is to determine to what degree the actual strategy is suitable and appropriate to meet the challenges and changes in the organizations environment. The SW-Part comprises internal factors the strengths and weaknesses of the organization. These are competences and resources that the organization possesses and that are under its

control. Strengths and weaknesses can relate to a variety of aspects and may depend on the actual situation. The OT-Part of the SWOT identifies Opportunities and Threats that the organizations face from trends and changes in its environment. These external factors are not under the control or influence of the organization. For example, a high customer loyalty is an (internal) strength of the organization, since it has to satisfy its customers again and again in order to keep them loyal. If, however, the industry faces a new trend that customers become less loyal to any organization, this is an external threat that might undermine the companys competitive advantage.

We know the need of management and its importance. Without proper management business cannot exist. By this project titled study of managerial functions of a company we tried to get maximum information about managerial functions with the limited time and we have following findings about this project.

Management is a vital function concerned with all aspects of the working of an enterprise. Managerial functions are just like as human brain with out brain human is not useful and without managerial functions business is not useful.

By the observation of managerial functions of Malabar modern rice mill we understand the execution of managerial function in to business is a complicated process, and it will not success without skilled managers.
