Measure

Remembering Describe the relationships between grams & kilograms; millimetres & Centimetres; millilitres & Litres.

Time/Temp.
Match 12 hour and 24 hour time. Make a clock showing how they are similar.

Mass/Weight
Make a chart showing different standards of weight units.

Volume
List 20 class or household items that have volume.

Length/Area
Make a list of all the different types of ways to measure length.

Understanding

Explain the difference between perimeter & area, and indicate when each should be used.

Compare Centigrade, C and Fahrenheit, F. Compare differences, like at what temperature is F when C is at 0 C. etc.

Draw different items of size & weight; explain which standard is the best to use for each item. One item for each standard.

Explain why different shapes can have the same volume.

Choose a page in your Maths Practice Book that has to do with Length or Area. Complete, Show all working out, and correct.

Applying

Construct a crossword (with clues) using different types of measurement (metric only).

Construct a small working paper & cardboard model of a thermometer with both F and C, + and - degrees.

Take photos of several objects and estimate their weight. Present photos, estimates & an explanation about each estimate in a report. Make a survey of what everybody in the class weighs. Present the information in graph form. Work out the Mean, mode, median and Range. Discuss in detail why your weight is different on Earth, The Moon, Jupiter & the Sun.

Analysing

Investigate why we use different types of measurement (cm, ml, kg). Write

Make a detailed diagram of what you do over a 24 hour period. Show ALL times and activities.

Creating

Your hair grows on average a mm a day. Measure your hair, how old is it? Write a short story about what you were doing when your hair started to grow. Design a measurement book. Include all relationships & types of measurement, include metric and imperial as well.

Evaluating

Debate or argue the advantages/ disadvantages of 24 time over 12 time.

Make at least 4 different 3D models of the same volume using nets. Photograph, sketch or glue & present showing the different models and what volume amount you used. Investigate the reason why during Summer time in Sweden people sell strawberries by the litre. Is this an accurate way to measure strawberries? Why/why not? Choose an object that you do not know the volume of (like a jug or pot) find out its volume. Make a small detailed journal of the steps you took. Design, develop & draw a new set of designer vases or bowls of different sizes and volumes. Add measurements to show how you got the volume of each.

Find items of the same length & draw them into groups on paper. Make three groups of different sizes.

Develop & make a poster selling a house, include information about the house, price, who to call, etc. Show lengths for things like walls & areas for things like room size. The way to work out area has just been invented & you are a journalist reporting on the story for the local newspaper. Write an article on it. Construct a detailed map of an area like; the class, your room or lounge room. Show the lengths of all major objects.

Invent a time machine with a working time dial(s) where you can choose Sec. Min. Hrs., Years, decades, Centuries, and millennia.

Write a song or poem about mass.

Measurement Assessment
You have to complete one activity from each column (up-down), so at the end you will have completed six (6) activities in total Of the six (6) activities that you do at least two (2) have to be taken from the grey area (bottom half). Due Friday March 23rd. All work should be neatly typed or written, have a high standard of presentation and be handed up in a folder of some sort. (If you dont have one, let me know!)
