Khoo Toir Lai, 48, of Lorong Kubang Buaya here, admitted giving the bribe as an inducement to avoid a lorry from being weighed at the Kuantan JPJ station. Khoo, charged under Section 17(b) of the Anti Corruption Commission Act 2009, committed the offence at KM6 Jalan Kuantan-Kuala Lumpur on June 7, last year. Corruption is still a serious offence which can affect the countrys economy, Sessions Judge Fatihah Idrus said before sentencing. In mitigation, Khoos counsel Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar said his client earned only RM 1,500 a month as a supervisor and that he had to support his wife, two children, aged six and seven, and his diabetic mother who required regular medication. Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafinas Shabudin submitted that the court should impose a deterrent sentence as stipulated by the law.
