Celsius 355 Ovals

An alternative shape with all the inherent attributes of Celsius Hot Finished Structural Hollow Sections (SHS) offering additional scope for visual expression.
Celsius Oval hollow sections share the same key attributes as the other members of the Celsius range, such as; minimal residual stresses, excellent welding capability, good performance in compression, high load capacity and reduced exposed area for coating. The geometry of the oval section combined with its aesthetic appearance makes it an exciting section for architects to work with. Key benefits of the oval section are: high strength in bending with minimum shadow, making them ideal, for example, in perimeter columns and in the structural supports of glazing wall systems. An alternative section for enhancing the visual appeal of elegant, lightweight structures. Produced in six sizes and a range of thickness, all Celsius ovals are a true elliptical section with a 2:1 ratio of major axes to minor axes dimensions. Sizes start at 150 x 75 x 4.0mm thick and go up to 500 x 250 x 16mm thick. The same mechanical and dimensional requirements of Celsius hot finished hollow sections to EN 10210 S355 J2H are used in the production of oval sections.

Brief The spectacular sculpture was erected in front of Goodwood House, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2005. It displays the proudest moments in Hondas motor sport history, celebrating six world-famous Honda powered Grand Prix cars, which are fixed to the base of each arm in order of their year of success. The secret of this structure is that the cars actually move up and down creating a mobile effect to entertain the visitors. This kinetic sculpture uses a 45m long arch of Corus Tubes

457 diameter circular hollow Section (CHS), supported on three legs on a massive underground base. The arch supports six 55m long swinging arms, made of Celsius Oval hollow section, each of which carries a Honda powered formula one car. A range of Celsius Ovals was used including 400 x 200mm, 300 x 150mm, 200 x 100mm and 150 x 75mm. The 457mm diameter CHS for the main arch was bent by The Angle Ring Company who also put a small radius on the 400 x 200 ovals to stiffen the arms and enhance the appearance.

Project Swords Airside Project, Dublin Architect RKD Architects Consulting Engineer Thomas Garland & Partners Main Contractor John Sisk & Son Ltd Steelwork Contractor Noel C Duggan Engineering Ltd Brief Celsius Ovals have been used to enhance the visual appeal of the new Swords office development at the Airside Business Park close to Dublin International Airport. 500 x 250mm Celsius Ovals were used to support the louvred external solar shading to the atrium, whereas 300 x 150mm ovals were used for the internal feature staircase. Ovals were the obvious choice for an exciting and elegant column solution to complement the architects vision for a contemporary modern office development.

Project Jarrold Store, Norwich Client Jarrold Property Architect C&M Architects Ltd Consulting Engineer Hale Allen Jones Main Contractor R G Carter Steelwork Contractor SCWS Limited

Brief Celsius Ovals were chosen by the Architects to achieve their vision of a pure modern structure with exposed slender steel columns. The 400 x 200mm oval hollow sections are visible from the street through the faceted, glazed faade. The development, an extension to the Jarrolds department store in Norwich, forms a link between an existing timber framed building dating from the 17th century on the one side and a 1970s building on the other.
