FIRST HALF

(Answer any THREE questions.)

A 100 N load falls from a height of 60 mm on a collar attached to a bar of 30 mm diameter and 400 mm long. Find the instantaneous stress and extension produced in the bar. Take Modulus of elasticity (E) = 2xlO5N/mm2. What is the percentage error if extension of the bar is neglected in final work done by the load? (15) 2. State the assumptions made in simple theory of bending. A circular pipe of external diameter 70 mm and thickness 8 mm is used as a simply supported beam over an effective span of 2.5 meters. Find the maximum concentrated load that can be applied at the centre of the span if permissible stress in tube is 150 N/mm2. (15) 3. A T-section of flange width 100 mm and thickness 12 mm and web width 12 mm, length 88 mm is subjected to a shear force of 20 kN. Draw shear stress distribution across the depth marking values at salient points. (15) State the assumptions made in the theory of pure torsion. Calculate the maximum intensity of shear stress induced and the angle of twist produced in radians in solid shaft of 100 mm diameter, 10 meters long transmitting 112.5 kW power at 150 r.p.m. Take G = 82 kN/mm2. 5. 4.

A hollow circular shaft of 6 meters long and inner and outer diameters of 75 mm and 100 mm respectively is subjected to a torque of 10 kN-m. If G = 80 GPa, determine the maximum shear stress produced and the total angle of twist.
