4.
A hollow circular shaft of 6 meters long and inner and outer diameters of 75 mm and 100 mm respectively is subjected to a torque of 10 kN-m. If G = 80 GPa, determine the maximum shear stress produced and the total angle of twist.

c) Shear stress may occur in any structural member due to (i) torsional effect (ii) bending effect (iii) both (i) and (ii), (iv) none of these d) The established relationship between E, G and JJ, is (i)E = 2G(l+n) ( i i ) E = 2G(l-n) (iii) G = 2E(l + u) (iv) G = 2E(l-u). e) The S.I. unit of bending moment is (i) pure number f) (ii) kg cm (iii) lbm (iv) Nm
The value on factor of safety may be (i) higher than unity (ii) lower than unity (iii) zero (iv) all of these.
g) The point on SF diagram, where shear force changes its nature is called (i) point of inflexion (iii) point of elasticity (ii) point of contraflexure (iv) none of these
h) In any hinge joint, reactive parameters are (i) only vertical force horizontal force i) (ii) only horizontal force (iii) both vertical and (iv) vertical force, horizontal force and a moment.
Gauge length and pitch distance in any riveted joint is (i) parallel to each other (iii) synonymus (ii) perpendicular to each other (iv) none of these.
j)
In a beam of triangular c/s, maximum shear stress due to bending occurs at (i) neutral axis (ii) apex point (iii) base line (iv) not along neutral axis.
7. A compound tube consists of a steel tube with internal and external dia 140 mm and 160 mm resp. and an outer brass tube with internal and external dia 160 mm and 180 mm. resp. Two tubes are 140 mm long and compound tube carries 900 kN axial load. Find stresses and load carried by each tube and the amount it shortens. Take Es = 2Eb = 2 x 105 MPa. (17Vi)

8. A steel tube of 25 mm ext. and 15 mm int. dia encloses a copper rod of 12mm dia. The assembly is held rigidly at both ends at a temperature of 293 K. Compute (i) stresses, when temperature is raised to 393 K and (ii) max. temperature the assembly can withstand, E s = 210 GPa, E c = 100 GPa, oc s = llxlO~ 6 /K, a c = 18 x 10~6/K, working stresses as = 230 MPa, ac = 120 MPa. (814+9) 9. Find suitable pitch for double riveted, double cover butt joint for 14 mm thick plates. Pitch of the rivets in outer row is twice the pitch of the rivets in inner row. Assume at = 150 MPa, as = 94.5 MPa, a\> = 212.5 MPa. (17%)
10. A beam ACDBE of 7 m length is simply supported at A and B 6 m apart, BE being overhang, with a tip load of 60 kN at E. A concentrated load of 60 kN is placed at D, 4 m away from A and a concentrated anti-clock moment of 120 kNm acts at C, 2 m away from A. Draw SF and BM diagram and mark values at salient locations.
