Instrumentation:
General Comments:
- This work, much like 1956-1958 centers on a small amount of rhythmic and pitch material and finds a form through timbral variation.
In this case the form that emerged is less about repetition and more about motion. This motion emerges from inside all four instruments
throughout the course of the work, and culminates in the utterance of the bass clarinet at the end.
- The biggest challenge of this piece is metrical. It is chamber music, and so I discourage the use of a conductor. A first meeting to figure
out cues is essential. It will create the sense of movement that is crucial for a convincing performance. It is necessary to know who leads
at any given bar, because this changes quite often.

multiphonics:
1) vocal: at the end of the piece I ask for the technique I call growl. This is a vocal multiphonic that should be at the most comfortable range of
the voice and the most capable of matching the dynamics of the instrument. Please note that this pitch may change. What is most important is
that something emerges out of the sound of the instrument, something beyond that which had been heard prior.
2) spectral multiphonics (also known as breaking up a pitch). These are graphically notated as an upwards ascending line from a low note. This
should be a sound with very little fundamental and most pitch change coming from embouchure.
3) fingered multiphonics. Please use the following six fingerings as a reference. They are notated with their respective pitches in the work. If
they dont work on your instrument, please find something that works dynamically as well as pitch-wise.
