Jamie Buerger Reflection #1 February 24, 2012 EDU 210-102 Upon arriving at the school for the first

day of my practicum, I was immediately struck by the personality of the school. School colors were shown proudly and you were greeted with smiles from everyone once they figured out why you were there. Safety for the students seemed to be one of the first priorities because I had to check in at the office and get escorted to the classroom of the teacher that I would be observing by the assistant principle. I really appreciate the care they take in making sure they know who is in the school at all times. It helps create a safe learning environment for the students. Corresponding through email with the teacher I am observing made our first meeting very friendly. She immediately introduced me to the classroom and showed me around her room so that I could familiarize myself with where things were. I noticed that students art work was displayed in all corners of the classroom; origami hanging from the ceiling, self portraits making their way to the wall as they were being finished, and clay sculptures drying on the back wall shelves. The students were very proud to have their artwork hanging for all to see. As a few weeks worth of observation has taken place, I have noticed that the atmosphere of the classroom changes with every class. The art foundations classes are more relaxed and function without many hitches. The art history classes are still positive but you can tell that students are a little less than thrilled to be taking that class in many cases. The teachers advisory period is all freshmen and I have noticed this is where the

biggest problems lie. Many students go to different classrooms or to the library for this 30 minute study period but the students who stay in the classroom are required to have something to work on the whole time. This doesnt always happen and it tends to create a more negative atmosphere. The classroom has seats for 32 students but the classes range from 20- 25 students on average. This seems to be a good size for one teacher to handle at a time and students receive enough one on one time to meet most of their needs. Materials are coordinated based on upcoming projects and are easy to access. The teacher has a routine formed and students know what is required of them when they enter and leave the classroom. Each class has their own space to store journals and backpacks and there isnt much wasted time in her classes. I have been able to explore a small portion of the school that I am observing and I am impressed with the spirit. Hallways are decorated with upcoming event posters and sign up sheets for various activities. Each classroom has their own bulletin board outside of the classroom for teacher to display things like group membership sign up, students work, or motivational quotes and the art hallway has a glass case for artwork to be displayed. All of these things help create a positive learning environment for the students and aides in unity and school spirit. I believe when a student feels like they contribute to their environment, they learn better in it.
