Heros Life
RICHARD STRAUSS Four Last Songs Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40 Amanda Echalaz soprano Marios Papadopoulos conductor Fresh from performing the title roles in the worlds greatest opera institutions, the superb Amanda Echalaz features in the achingly beautiful Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. Written in the sunset of his years, these songs provide the final chapter of the composers life-long love affair with the soprano voice, and contrast perfectly with the swagger of his earlier, thinly-veiled autobiographical depiction of a heros life replete with a vicious dismissal of music critics!

The 2011/12 season ends in suitably spectacular style as the Philomusica takes to the great outdoors of Christ Churchs Tom Quad in a memorable midsummer musical extravaganza to celebrate The Queens Diamond Jubilee. There will be a sense of history repeating as it is just over 50 years since a similar concert was first put on by students in Tom Quad in 1961. 2012 also marks the bicentenary of 1812, thus the concerts finale of Tchaikovskys famous overture is entirely appropriate. Summer Baroque
Welcome to Oxford Philomusicas second Summer Baroque Festival. As in last years highly successful inaugural season, we have put together an appetising menu which blends the familiar with the not so familiar. The music of the towering figure of J. S. Bach rightly takes pride of place, complemented by attractively varied works by his most illustrious contemporary, Georg Philipp Telemann. In the opening concert of the Festival Vivaldi and three other Venetians celebrate the music of their home city. At the heart of the season lies the extraordinary talent of the Philomusicas own Soloists, highlighted in an exquisite evening of chamber music from the Court of Frederick the Great.

Oxford Philomusica
Oxfords Professional Symphony Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford
In little more than a decade Oxfords professional symphony orchestra has become one of the leading orchestras in the UK. Praised as excellent by Gramophone Magazine and thoroughly impressive by BBC Music Magazine, Oxford Philomusicas reputation is based on the uncompromising artistic standards of its Founder and Music Director, Marios Papadopoulos, and maintained by some of the very best orchestral musicians in London, Oxford and the Thames Valley. From the start Oxford Philomusica has enjoyed endorsement of its mission from a remarkable roster of distinguished artists including Andrs Schiff, Hlne Grimaud, John Lill, Stephen Kovacevich, Nicola Benedetti, Natalie Clein and the Orchestras Patron, Vladimir Ashkenazy. In October 2002 the Philomusica was appointed the first-ever Orchestra In Residence at the University of Oxford, and its year-round programme of concerts at the Sheldonian Theatre has attracted consistent critical praise and loyal public support. Amongst the Orchestras achievements are its outstanding recording of Haydns Creation with New College Choir, which was the CD of the Month in BBC
Music Magazine; major celebrations of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn; and its annual International Piano Festival and Summer Academy. To these successes should be added the establishment of the hugely popular FUNomusica Family Concerts, as well as the Orchestras annual Summer Baroque Season and Chamber Music Series, both showcasing what The Times recognized as the Orchestras glorious individual players. Since its inception the Orchestra has been firmly committed to education and community work, bringing music to the widest possible range of audiences often outside the traditional concert venue to schools, hospitals, community centres and retirement homes. As part of its University Residency, the Orchestra collaborates with the Faculty of Music in educational programmes for the student community. And the Orchestras partnerships with Oxford City Council and
Oxfordshire County Council provide performance opportunities and tuition to hundreds of talented young musicians. Oxford Philomusica enthusiastically embraces its role of filling what Arts Council England defined as an identifiable regional need for a professional symphony orchestra based in the area between Birmingham and Bournemouth. The Philomusica has been appointed Orchestra in Residence at the new Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, and its Thames Valley presence is being further consolidated by new ventures in Maidenhead, Reading, Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath. Beyond its home region, the Orchestra is rapidly developing a national and international profile with regular appearances in London and an international touring programme with appearances in France, Switzerland, Greece, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.

How to support
Without our supporters we could never hope to sustain the world-class music making that we promote in Oxford and across the Thames Valley. The Orchestra relies entirely on its own fundraising efforts to maintain not only its concert programme but also all of its education and community work. Oxford Philomusica is a registered UK charity number 1084256 so all donations attract Gift Aid where applicable. At this critical stage of our development we are actively seeking visionaries who will invest in our future. Be part of the musical world of a great orchestra. Friends and Patrons Schemes Why not support one of these schemes and join a like-minded group of people, who are inspired by the work of the Orchestra and actively assist it by becoming part of the wider Oxford Philomusica family? In return for an annual subscription you will enjoy a range of benefits: Generous discount on tickets, advance notice of concerts and priority booking Free interval drinks at Sheldonian concerts and the opportunity to meet the musicians Post-concert receptions (additional charge) Admission to rehearsals Special members events including a termly recital and dinner (additional charge) Quarterly newsletter Keynotes'
