BLACK WARRIOR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA BANKHEAD NATIONAL FOREST (Lawrence & Winston Counties) ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES DIVISION OF WILDLIFE & FRESHWATER FISHERIES Hunting Regulations August 1, 2010 July 31, 2011 PERMITS: Permits for gun deer hunts will be issued from the Black Warrior Headquarters checking station, 200 yards off of Hwy. 33 on the Northwest Road (Forest Service Rd. 208), on the dates of the hunts and from 3:00 to 5:00 PM the day before the hunt. Permits for the Youth Turkey Hunt will be issued from the checking station on the day of the hunt; check station will be open by 5:00 AM. Season small game, archery deer, primitive weapons deer, the 6-consecutive day either-sex gun deer hunt on Zone A, the special feral swine hunt, and spring turkey map/permits may be obtained from the self-service issuing station located at the management area headquarters; Western Auto, Moulton; Dependable Service Center, Russellville; Wren Grocery, Intersection of Hwy. 33 and 36, three miles south of Moulton; J.D.s Quick Stop, Hwy. 24, Mt. Hope; Wal-Mart locations at Hwy. 195 East, Haleyville and at the intersection of Hwy. 24 and 157, Moulton; the Winston County Coop, Hwy. 195 east, Haleyville; Lawrence and Winston County Courthouses; U.S. Forest Service Office, Hwy. 33 North, Double Springs; by writing Area Biologist Barry Baird, P.O. Box 775, Moulton, AL 35650 (enclose current hunting license number with a self-addressed stamped envelope); or by printing from the internet at www.outdooralabama.com/hunting/wildlife-areas/wmamaps/ (both front and back pages of the internet map/permit must be together to be valid). Trapping permits must be obtained from the area biologist. All deer, turkey, and feral swine killed during any hunt shall be reported and/or logged at the checking station located on the Northwest Road (FS Road 208) prior to leaving the WMA. Special buck antler restrictions apply to all deer hunting on Zone B.
NOTE: A State Hunting License*, management area permit, and Wildlife Management Area (WMA) License* are required when hunting deer, turkey or waterfowl on any wildlife management area. Individuals, ages 16 through 64, that utilize any WMA shooting range are required to possess either a State Hunting License, a WMA license, or a Wildlife Heritage License is required when using these ranges (This does not apply to the Hurricane Creek Shooting Range on the Black Warrior WMA). *A Wildlife Heritage License is valid in lieu of a State Hunting License and a WMA License on a WMA for all small game hunting, except waterfowl.

HUNTING DATES: DEER Zone A: NOTE: On days of Gun Deer Hunts in Zone B, Zone A will be closed to ALL hunting.

NOTE: On days of Gun Deer and/or Primitive Weapons Deer Hunts in Zone A, Zone B will be closed to ALL hunting. NOTE: All antlered bucks regardless of harvest method, on Zone B must have a minimum of 4 points, at least 1 inch long, on one antler to be legal.
(Gun) (Archery) Stalk Hunting Hunters Choice (except spotted fawns) with buck antler restrictions: Minimum 4 points (at least 1 inch in length) on one antler (two deer per day, except only one may be an antlered buck): Nov. 20, Dec. 3 4, Dec. 17 18, Dec. 21 22 and Jan. 6 8. Stalk Hunting Hunters Choice (except spotted fawns) with buck antler restrictions: Minimum 4 points (at least 1 inch in length) on one antler (two deer per day): Oct. 15 - Jan 31. (Hunter must obtain a hunt permit on days of gun deer hunts)

ALL OTHER HUNTING SEASONS: NOTE: On days of Gun Deer and/or Primitive Weapons Deer Hunts in either Zone A or B all other seasons will be closed on both zones.
TURKEY: (Youth) (Physically Disabled) (Regular) March 26 (Daylight until 1:00 PM). March 31 (Daylight until 1:00 PM). Participating hunters must meet and possess documents meeting the medical requirements of regulation 220-2-.109. April 1 April 30 (Daylight until 1:00 PM). Oct. 1 Feb. 28 (except on days of gun deer and/or primitive weapons deer hunts). Nov. 13 Feb. 28 (except on days of gun deer and/or primitive weapons deer hunts). Nov. 13 Feb. 28 (except on days of gun deer and/or primitive weapons deer hunts). Oct. 1 Feb. 28 (except on days of gun deer and/or primitive weapons deer hunts). Sep. 1 Sept. 30 And Feb. 1 Feb. 28 (Nighttime hours only) (Fox DOGS ONLY, NO GUNS). Dec. 20 - Jan. 31 (except on days of gun deer and/or primitive weapons deer hunts). Nov. 13 - Jan. 31. March 1 March 14. Special Season using the firearms and archery equipment as specified for WMA Stalk Gun Deer Hunts. Hunter Orange requirements would also apply. (NO DOGS ALLOWED) (DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY). Feral swine may also be killed during all scheduled area hunts, when possessing a valid permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts (DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY) (NO DOGS ALLOWED). Open during all scheduled AREA hunts, when possessing a valid WMA permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts (NO DOGS ALLOWED) (DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY). Open during any schedule AREA hunt within the time period of the deer and turkey seasons in that county, when possessing a valid WMA permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts (NO DOGS ALLOWED) (DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY). Only one (1) fox per day may be harvested.

BAG LIMITS: Deer (ALL BUCKS HARVESTED ON WMAS MUST BE INCLUDED AS PART OF THE ANNUAL STATE WIDE 3 BUCK LIMIT) - Hunters Choice Gun & Primitive Weapons Hunts (either sex except spotted fawns) 2 deer per day- only 1 may be an antlered buck, except special buck antler restrictions apply on Zone B (see hunt dates above); Hunters Choice Archery (either sex except spotted fawns) 2 deer per day, except special buck antler restrictions apply on Zone B (see hunt dates above); Turkey (Gobblers only) - 1 a day, 5 per season; Squirrel - 8 a day; Quail - 12 a day; Rabbit - 8 a day; Crow - No Limit; Raccoon - 5 per party per day; Opossum - No Limit; Woodcock - 3 a day; Feral Swine, Bobcat, and Coyote - No Limit; Fox - 1 a day; Falconers may take migratory game birds (not more than 3 per day in aggregate combination) and resident game birds and animals following the bag limits listed above for firearms and archery. PERMITTED FIREARMS, BOW AND ARROW, & FALCONRY: Deer: Stalk Hunts: Centerfire rifles that have been plugged or otherwise incapable of holding more than 11 cartridges and using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition or shotguns using slugs only (no buckshot) or muzzle loading rifles .40 caliber or larger, or centerfire handguns with a minimum 4 inch barrel length using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition. All applicable laws regarding possessing and carrying handguns must be followed. Primitive Weapons: Using only muzzle loading rifles, muzzle loading shotguns, or bow and arrow. Rifles must be .40 caliber or larger; shotguns to use single round balls only. Firearms must be incapable of holding more than one charge per barrel. Turkey & Woodcock: Shotguns using No. 2 shot or smaller. Squirrel & Rabbit & Crow: Shotguns using No. 4 shot or smaller, .22 caliber or smaller rimfire firearms, and muzzle loading rifles .40 caliber or smaller, or rifles operated by air. Quail: Shotguns using No. 4 shot or smaller. Raccoon & Opossum: Shotguns using No. 6 shot or smaller; .22 caliber rimfire firearms. Trapping: Standard .22 caliber or smaller rimfire firearms only, during daylight hours only. All trappers must conform with all state laws and regulations pertaining to trapping. Special Feral Swine Hunts: Same as Stalk Deer Hunts (Hunter Orange Requirements Apply). On all scheduled hunts, bow & arrow and crossbows will be legal (no crossbows allowed for turkey hunting). Broadhead points will be legal only during scheduled deer and turkey hunts and during the special feral swine hunt in March. Bows & arrows must conform with State Regulations on specification. WHEN BOW AND ARROW HUNTING, IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL FOR ANY PERSON TO CARRY OR POSSESS ANY FIREARMS, except on days of either-sex gun deer hunts (See 29 below for limited exception). Falconry will be legal on all AREA scheduled hunts for legally permitted falconers; following the dates those seasons are open on each AREA. IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL:
To hunt, trap, use dogs, possess firearms, traps or bow and arrow, except on designated target ranges and except bow fishing equipment from March 1 August 31, without a valid permit. A permit is valid only during scheduled AREA seasons during legal hunting hours and only with the required hunting License(s) and weapons and ammunition permitted for hunting wildlife listed on permit. See (27) for limited exception for certain lawfully licensed handguns possessed for personal protection. 2. To use dogs for stalk hunting of deer or for turkey hunting. 3. To use dogs for small game hunting where dogs are expressly prohibited. 4. To use dogs for hunting, training or any purpose from March 1 until the openings of the following fall gun season. 5. For any person under 16 years of age to hunt on the management area unless accompanied by a licensed hunter at all times. 6. To have in possession any fully automatic rifle or any firearms, ammunition or bow and arrow except as prescribed above on the Permitted Firearms and Bow and Arrow section or on a designated shooting range. 7. For any person to hunt deer with gun without first presenting his required hunting licenses, for certain specified hunts, at the checking station. 8. For any person to carry firearms in or on a vehicle any of the following: any firearms [Including pistols/handguns, except as described in (27)] with ammunition in the magazine, breech or clip attached to firearms, or black powder weapons with primer, cap or flash powder in place, or cocked crossbows. See (27) for limited exception for certain lawfully licensed handguns possessed for personal protection. 9. To camp in the management area except in designated sites. Campers using generators must camp in site designated for generator use. On areas located on U.S. Forest Service lands, this camping restriction applies from October 1-January 31. Individuals or groups may the area for a period not to exceed nine (9) days in any 30-day period. Campfires must be extinguished before departing. No warming fires shall be permitted away from camping area. 10. To kill or willfully molest any species of wildlife except those designated for hunting. However, this regulation shall not apply to coyote or feral swine which may be killed during all scheduled area hunts, when possessing a valid permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for such designated hunts (DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY) (NO DOGS ALLOWED). Additionally, bobcat and fox may be killed during deer and turkey seasons in that county, when possessing a valid permit and using weapons and ammunition that are legal for the open designated WMA hunt (DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY) (NO DOGS ALLOWED). Only one fox may be harvested per day. 11. To discharge fireworks at any time. 12. To discharge firearms for target practice except on the designated target range. 13. To hunt or discharge firearms within 150 yards of any camping area, dwelling, dam or timber operation, 100 yards of any paved public road or highway, or from within the right-of-way of any developed U.S. Forest Service road (paved or unpaved), which is open for vehicle traffic; within a posted safety zone or on Sunday within one/half mile of any church. 14. To use fire to smoke out game. 15. For any person to possess any firearm while hunting with bow and arrow or crossbow, except on days of either sex gun deer hunts (See 27 for limited exception). 16. To transport deer killed during gun hunts from the area before being checked at the designated checking stations for scientific data. 17. For any person except authorized personnel to operate any motor driven vehicle behind, under or around any locked gate, barricaded road or sign which prohibits vehicular traffic. 18. For any unauthorized person to possess and/or operate ANY UNLICENSED MOTOR DRIVEN VEHICLE (2, 3, 4, or 6 wheel) on the area. For any unauthorized person at any time to operate a motor scooter, motorcycle, motorized trail bike or any motor driven vehicle on the area except on regularly used roads open for public use by four wheel vehicle traffic; or for any unauthorized person to ride or possess horses on any AREA except (1) on roads open to four-wheel motorized vehicles; and (2) in areas, roads, and trails designated as open to horses. 19. For any person to hunt deer or feral swine on days of scheduled gun, or primitive weapons hunts without wearing an outer garment above the waist containing a minimum of 144 square inches of hunter orange color, or either a full size hunter orange hat or cap. Hunters are not required to wear hunter orange when hunting from a stand elevated twelve (12) feet or more above the ground. The hunter orange must be of solid color, except for a small logo and or printing on the front of the cap, and visible from any angle. 20. For any person except authorized personnel to block or otherwise stop traffic on any road or at any gate by parking a vehicle in such a way that passage around the vehicle is impossible. 21. For any person to deposit, distribute or scatter grain, salt, litter, or any other materials on any AREA maintained by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources prior to receiving approval from said Department. 22. To hunt small game during gun deer hunts and primitive weapon hunts. 23. To damage or remove any artifacts, trees, crops or other plants, dirt, gravel or sod without legal authorization. 24. To erect or use a permanent tree stand or scaffold without written permission from the landowners. 25. To cast a light of any kind, either hand held, affixed to a vehicle, or otherwise, between the hours of sunset and sunrise except in areas where the state law is more restrictive. This paragraph does not apply to the headlights of vehicles traveling in a normal manner on an open established road. 26. To hunt from an elevated stand or platform without attaching themselves to the tree or platform with a full body safety harness capable of supporting their weight. 27. To violate any posted restrictions on entry, hunting, fishing, or other conduct. 28. To release any animal, bird, fish, or other wildlife without first obtaining written permission from the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division. 29. Nothing in this regulation prohibits or requires a wildlife area permit for the possession of handguns by lawfully licensed persons for personal protection, provided the handguns are not used to hunt or take or to attempt to take wildlife except as otherwise provided by this regulation. NOTE: Administrators of the hunt shall have the right to distribute the hunters and to inspect all vehicles or other equipment while on the areas. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and landowners who are making the hunting possible, hereby put each hunter on notice that he hunts at his own risk and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and such landowners shall not be responsible for any accidents or injuries that may occur. The Black Warrior Wildlife Management Area is operated by the Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries Division and is cooperatively managed with the U.S. Forest Service and financial assistance of the Alabama Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). 1.

YOUTH HUNT: Youth must be less than 16 years old. Supervisors must be 25 years old or older, or the parent of the youth, and must be properly licensed to hunt on a WMA. The youth must remain within arms length of the adult at all times. The adult-youth pair is to check in and out at the Area checking station as a single unit.
