The Good News Program has the only planners to receive an Imprimatur!

The Good News Program starts in the primary classroom. Our Primary Planner gives children in kindergarten and first grade a head start in learning to be organized. And, like their older brothers and sisters, they learn about the Church through its major feasts and seasons, the Sacraments, and the Church Year, rooted in the stories of Jesus in the Sunday Gospels.

A faith-filled introduction to daily planning! age-appropriate reSource pageS

The Seven Sacraments
The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us: Sacraments are powers that come forth from the Body of Christ, which is ever-living and life-giving. They are actions of the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church. They are the masterworks of God in the new and everlasting covenant [1116].

The Greatest Commandment

Name Room

The Sacraments of Initiation

The Sacraments of Initiation lay the foundations of every Christian life through a new birth in Baptism, strengthening in Confirmation, and nourished with the food of life in the Eucharist. [Catechism 1212]

The Sacraments of Healing

Jesus is the physician for both our bodies and our souls. When we need to be healed, we come to these two Sacraments. [Catechism 1421]

The Sacraments of Mission

The grace we receive with these two Sacraments makes us strong in order to serve God and one another. [Catechism 1533-1534]

We offer unique Teacher Planners & Supplements for all grade levels. (see pages 14-17)

Look for These Symbols
The many GREEN Sundays during the year remind us that Jesus love is to be used and shared. All during the year we celebrate special seasons and special days. The color of the day tells us about the special event or person we remember on that day. WHITE (or gold) is a color of joy. These days are happy. The color RED shows that a person died for Jesus. These people are called martyrs. On PALM SUNDAY, Jesus enters Jerusalem in triumph. We shout, Hosanna to the Son of David! Then Jesus is arrested, suffers and dies for our sins. On the LAST SUNDAY of the Church Year we celebrate CHRIST THE KING. The CHURCH YEAR begins with the season of ADVENT, which announces that Jesus is coming! We use candles to help us count the weeks. PINK or ROSE is the color of rejoicing. We rejoice in a special way on the THIRD SUNDAY of Advent because Christmas is almost here!

Daily exercises that introduce Gospel/Church-related discussions to young children throughout the week Weekly puzzles, word searches and pictures for students to color, drawn from Sunday's Gospel story the oNly Catholic Planners using the NAB: leCTioNAry for MAss translation students will hear on sunday Activities that build primary vocabulary and writing skills through focus on the Gospel-based Word of the Week A faithful introduction to Catholic saint and feast days for the youngest children in your school Resource pages call attention to the Catholic faith, the Sacraments, the Bible and more for children preparing for First Communion Back-cover Holy Land map which invites students to Journey with Jesus through the Gospel PLUS! The CHRISTMAS SEASON tells us that Jesus has come. We see pictures of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, the Holy Family. During the CHRISTMAS SEASON we also celebrate EPIPHANY, the day when the magi followed a star to visit Jesus.

EASTER is a season of joy. The Lord is risen from the dead, and we sing, ALLELUIA! On the ASCENSION, Jesus leaves us with a simple message, Peace be with you.

PURPLE is the color of repentance. During the solemn season of LENT we remember how Jesus suffered and died for us, the greatest demonstration of Gods love. Remember, the color PINK OR ROSE helps us rejoice. We rejoice on the 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT because Easter is getting very close!

Jesus promised not to leave us alone! The DAY OF PENTECOST informs us that he sends the Holy Spirit to be our Helper and our Friend. The color is RED, like the flames that appeared on the heads of the disciples that special day. TRINITY SUNDAY is celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost. On Trinity Sunday we honor God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Liturgical Symbols for 2011-12

Begin with the Sign of the Cross
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.

The Apostles Creed

In the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pray the Apostles Creed as you hold the cross on your Rosary.
When we pray the Apostles Creed we are saying the things we believe about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and our Catholic faith. Find this prayer inside the front cover of this book. Learn it by heart. Color the cross on the next page yellow.

Pray one Our Father on the first large bead of the Rosary. Jesus taught his disciples to pray by teaching them the words to this prayer. Do you know it by heart? Color the Our Father bead red. . Pray three Hail Marys on the next three beads.
When we pray the Hail Mary, we are honoring Mary with the words of the Angel Gabriel and Marys cousin Elizabeth. Color these Hail Mary beads blue.

The Our Father

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Pray one Glory Be on the space between the beads.

When we pray the Glory Be, we are praising God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

The Rosary is divided into parts, called Mysteries.

Each part helps us remember something from the life of Jesus, his family and his friends.

The Glory Be
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

We begin each Mystery by saying the Our Father.

Color all of the Our Father beads red. (Hint! These beads are larger than the others.)

Pray ten Hail Marys on the next ten beads.

That is a lot of Hail Marys. Use your Rosary beads to help you count them. Color all Hail Mary beads blue.

We finish each mystery by praying one Glory Be on the space between the beads. At the end of the Rosary we pray the Hail, Holy Queen.
Find this prayer inside the front cover of this book.

The Books of the Bible

HOW TO READ THE Bible : Gods Words of Love
The Bible is a holy book filled with exciting stories that tell us about Gods love for his people. It has many different kinds of writingstories, letters, prayers, songs and moreand we know every book contains the inspired words of God. Reading the Bible is a wonderful way to learn about God, our ancestors in faith and the world we live in today.

Activity
Look up these verses in the Bible and write the missing words in the blanks.
1. Proverbs 13:13 He who despises the ________ must _____ for it, but he who reveres the __________________ will be ________________. 2. Ecclesiastes 8:5 He who ________ the commandment experiences no _______, and the ________ mans ________ knows ___________ and judgments. 3. Matthew 22:40 The whole _________ and the _____________ depend on these _________ commandments. 4. John 13:34-35 I give you a new _________________: love one ____________. As I have _________ you, so you also should love ________ another. This is how all will __________ that you are my _____________, if you have love for one another. 5. Ephesians 6:1-3 _______________, obey your ________ [in the Lord], for this is __________. _________ your father and mother. This is the _________ commandment with a _____________, that it may go ________ with you and that you may have a ________ life on _________. 6. 1 John 3:23-24 And his commandment is this: we should ____________ in the _________ of his Son, Jesus Christ, and _______ one another just as he ________________ us. Those who ________ his commandments _____________ in him, and he in __________, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the _______________ that he ___________ us.

Two Parts of the Bible

The Old Testament begins in the beginning with the story of creation found in the book of Genesis. Reading the Old Testament helps us learn how much God loves his people.

The Bible is a collection of many books, divided into two parts: the Old Testament (TES-ta-ment) and the New Testament. The New Testament begins with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It tells about the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus and the history of the early Christian Church.

How to Find a Bible Verse

Bible citations (sigh-TAY-shuns) show you how to find a verse or story in the Bible. There are three steps to looking up a passage in the Bible:

1.

Find the book that the reading is in. Example: Exodus Say: EHK-so-duhs. Hint: Look in the Old Testament, between the books of Genesis and Leviticus. It is part of the first five books in the Bible, also called the Pentateuch. Exodus tells the stories of God, Moses, and the Ten Commandments. Find the chapter of the book the reading is in. Example: Exodus 20 Say: Exodus, chapter twenty. Hint: The chapter is the first number after the name of the book. Find the verse number(s) of the reading. Example: Exodus 20:2 Say: Exodus, twenty, two.

2. 3.

Hint: The verse is the second number, found after the chapter number. The chapter and the verse are separated by a colon (:). If two verse numbers are separated with a hyphen (-), you are to read all of the verses in between. If the verse numbers are separated with a comma (,), read only the verses whose numbers are given. Now look up some verses on your own!

I belIeve in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I belIeve in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. PERIOD

The comma separates words in a list: I rented CDs, videos, and DVDs. is used before a conjunction that joins two clauses with subjects and verbs: Jason and Jill went for the ball, but neither caught it. sets off clauses and phrases: Steve, who just turned 13, had never been out of the city. is used after a dependent clause that starts a sentence: When your grades come up, I will raise your allowance. sets apart words that refer to each other: Johann Gutenberg, the printer, lived over 500 years ago. separates the words like cities and states or the numbers in dates: Detroit, Michigan, is Motown. Double quotation marks are used at the beginning and the end of a quotation. Single quotation marks begin and end a quote within another quote: Jesus said, So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say We are unprofitable servants. Commas and periods usually fall inside the quotation marks, but colons and semicolons usually fall outside.

QUOTATION MARKS

Semicolons are also used to separate lists in which commas are already being used: The film opened in these major cities: St. Louis, MO; Denver, CO; and Los Angeles, CA.

Thought-provoking invitation to read the Gospel for the following Sunday.

The greatest COMMANDMENTthe Pharisees and Saducees just knew they had finally set Jesus up to fail. All Jews know well that the Law of Moses which they conscientiously follow, consists of the 613 laws found in the Pentateuch or Torah, the first five books of the Bible. No one could possibly sum up all those laws into one. But once again Jesus proved he was smarter and more clever than the scholars of Jewish law, by demonstrating how hundreds of commandments and laws together with testimonies from the prophets, are easily and beautifully combined into only two: Love the Lord your God and love your neighbor. October 16-22
Thoughts on Sundays Readings
In Sundays Gospel, Jesus once more defends himself against the Pharisees and Sadducees. The Gospel tells us this time they sent a scholar of the law to test Jesus. As usual, Jesus outdid the educated members of his community, proving his knowledge to be far greater and wiser than theirs was. Jesus said the whole law depends on these two commandments: Love of God and Love of neighbor. Help students understand that Jewish laws number in the hundreds, encompassing what is contained in the Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures, especially the Pentateuch. These laws mention everything a good Jew is supposed to do, from how and what to eat, to when and where to eat it. Jesus quickly summed all of these laws up for them and for us. Observing all the Commandments is vital, yet if we observe these two to their fullest, we will, likewise, be observing the rest. Be sure to review all of the Ten Commandments this week. Read the account in Exodus 20. St. Paul of the Cross, 1694-1775 What is a parish mission? Many parishes schedule parish missions to help participants renew and refresh their faith and prayer life. Some religious orders devote themselves to the special preaching needed for these events. St. Paul had a deep devotion to the Passion of Jesus. He gathered a group of men together and formed an order called the Barefoot Clerks of the Cross and Passion. We know them as Tuesday, October 18 the Passionists. Huge crowds of people came St. Luke, 1st century to hear St. Paul and his fellow priests preach. St. Luke is credited with writing two books Many turned their lives around because of in the New Testament: The Third Gospel these experiences. and the Book of Acts, a continuation of his Gospel, that describes the early days of the Christian community. World Mission Sunday

Monday

Dictionary A commandment is a rule or law. When we follow Gods Commandments, we show love for God and others.

St. Ignatius of Antioch

Monday The word this week is very long so show students the shorter word within it (command). What is a command? With your loud teacher voice, surprise the class by shouting a command: SIT DOWN, NOW! All of us have laws and rules we must follow in society. God has given us commandments to follow so we will live good lives here and be in heaven someday. How many commandments did God give us? (10) What special prophet did God give the commandments to? (Moses) In Sundays Gospel story, Jesus sums up all ten into two: Love of God and love of neighbor. Tuesday Recall last weeks discussion about the Golden Rule, etc., as you talk about Tuesdays Journal Exercise. Today we remember St. Luke, apostle and evangelist. What is an evangelist? What evangelist did we remember on September 21? (St. Matthew) St. Luke wrote two important books in the Bible. One is his Gospel, the other is the Book of Acts.

available.

Did you know? Jesus summed up all 613 Jewish laws into just two!

Wednesday Have the children draw two shapes like the stone tablets that traditionally represent the Ten Commandments or see the reproducible pattern on the Internet. Introduce them to Roman numerals by placing I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X on the board. Explain how they will put I, II, and III, on the LEFT tablet because these commandments refer to God. Read about these commandments in Exodus 20 (to simplify the story, use a childrens Bible). The rest of the numbers will be placed on the RIGHT tablet because they tell us how we should treat one another. When finished, your tablets reflect Sundays Gospel: Two great commandmentsLove of God and Love of neighbor.

Simchat Torah begins at sundown.

Friday: To prepare for the month of November, ask students to bring in a picture of someone in their families who has died. As part of the assignment, each child should learn a little about the person: place of birth; where he/she lived; did he/she get married and have children? How are they related? (You may want to send a note home asking parents for help.)

Spread Sundays News

In Sundays Gospel, Jesus once more was defending himself against the Pharisees and Sadducees. Help students understand that there are actually 613 Jewish laws, encompassing what is contained in the Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures, especially the Pentateuch. These laws mention everything a good Jew is supposed to do, from how and what to eat, to when and where to eat it. Jesus quickly summed up all 613 of these laws for them and for us. Observing all the Commandments is vital, yet if we observe these two to their fullest, we will, likewise, be observing the rest.

Try This

Objective: Help students visually connect with the Two Greatest Commandments Gather Pieces of 8" x 11" paper or card stock, two per student with the outline of a tablet for the commandments. A pattern for commandment tablets available on the internet. Pre-cut the paper for younger students. Go to Work! Have the children draw two shapes like the stone tablets that traditionally represent the Ten Commandments or pass out the patterns. Put Roman numerals 1-10 on the board: (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X). I, II, and III, go on the LEFT tablet because these commandments refer to God. The rest of the numbers will be placed on the RIGHT tablet because they tell us how we should treat one another. When finished, your tablets reflect Sundays Gospel: Two great commandmentsLove of God and Love of neighbor.

The Church Year is a cycle of seasons and feasts that makes present for us the saving action of Jesus life and ministry. The cycle of the Church Year revolves around three great feast days that celebrate the Mysteries of ChristChristmas, Easter and Pentecost. The seasons that connect these days are Advent, the Christmas Season, Lent, the Easter Season and Ordinary Time.

ADVENT: the preparation time for Christs coming, beginning the fourth Sunday before Christmas. THE CHRISTMAS SEASON: two weeks of celebration of Christs birth, leading to Epiphany and the Baptism of our Lord. ORDINARY TIME: the four to nine weeks between the Christmas Season and Lent. LENT: Ash Wednesday followed by 40 days of preparation for Easter, concluding at the three days of the Triduum, the very center of the whole Church Year. Holy Week runs from Passion Sunday through the Easter Triduum, the three days beginning with the Mass of the Lords Supper on Holy Thursday and ending with Vespers on Easter Sunday. THE EASTER SEASON: begins on Easter Sunday, followed by fifty days of rejoicing. The season includes the Ascension and ends with the seasons climax, Pentecost. ORDINARY TIME: the two dozen weeks from Pentecost Sunday to Christ the King Sunday. The feast of All Saints is celebrated late in this season.
