Session One Parts of the kayak

Emptying the kayak To empty a Kayak you have to have two people and lift the grab handle and then you lift it up and down until you feel the water is all out. Getting into the kayak To get into a kayak, you need to; Put the kayak into the water next to the side. Have your partner hold the kayak steady whilst you get in. Put one foot in first. Next, you sit in the kayak and put in your other leg. You must make sure that your knees are bent and touching the edge of the kayak. Do not rush getting in to the kayak. Session Two Moving the kayak with hands When in a kayak without a paddle, you will need to use your hands in order to move around. To do some basic action to move, you just need to put your hands in the water and just pull your hands backwards this will allow you to go forwards and then do the opposite to go backwards like going forwards hands must go in to the water to move around. When you want to turn the kayak depending on what way you go right or left use your left hand to turn right and do the opposite action to turn the other way.

When you capsizing you got to do the following step: 1. Make sure you have a lot room before you capsizing. 2. When your up side down lean forwards and then put your hands on the side of the kayak and push yourself out of the kayak and you will just slide out. 3. Swim to the surface of the water, turn the kayak over so the seat is not in the water and get someone to lift the kayak out with you then empty the water out of the kayak. Session Three This is the parts of the paddle you use when kayaking: Moving forwards: To move the forwards in a kayak, hold the paddle with your hands, put one blade of your paddle in the water next to the kayak in front of you and pull backwards until the blade is behind you. Pull the blade out of the water, then put the other end in the water in front of you again and do the same. Moving backwards To move backwards in the kayak, put one side of the paddle in the water next to the kayak behind you, and then pull the blade forwards in the water until the blade is in front of you. When the blade is in front of you, take it out of the pool and put the opposite blade in the other side of the kayak and do the same. Session Four Capsizing (Using a spraydeck) When you are capsizing with the sraydeck on, move to the middle of the pool and make sure you have space. When your ready tip over, you then have to grab the handle at the front of your sraydeck, pull it and then push yourself out of the kayak. Methods of turning (Sweep stroke and low brace turn) To turn, all you need to do is these following steps; Use one blade in the water to turn.

Use left side of the paddle to turn right by bringing it backwards in the water. Or right side to turn left by doing the same. Methods of stopping To stop your kayak all you need to do is, when your moving forwards, just move the paddle in the opposite direction that you were doing when going forwards then you will start slow down, move the paddle slower until you stop. Session Five Eskimo Rescue (also known as the T rescue) An Eskimo Rescue is a Kayaking move when you recover from a capsize. After drawing attention to the capsize (usually by banging on the bottom of the boat), the Kayaker runs their hands along the side of the Kayak until another comes up perpendicular to the capsized Kayak. The capsized Kayaker feels the other Kayak with the hands, and grasping the other Kayak, uses his hands to pull himself up so that his head is resting on the other Kayak. He then performs a hip-flick to right himself. Sculling Draw The way to do it is by hold your paddle with a normal forward paddling grip. Turn the trunk of the human body to the side and put the paddle almost vertically into water. Your upper arm should be bent about 90 degrees and kept high. Check that the power face of a paddle is facing towards the kayak. Sculling for support If you lose control of your kayak after being hit by a wave, place the paddle flat on the surface of the water and push down hard using the curved outwards side, the water produces up-thrust which will equal out the force and this will keep you up out the water.
