Whats Building Energy Quotient?

bEQ lets a commercial building owner zero in on opportunities to lower building operating cost and make informed decisions to increase value. bEQs In Operation rating applies an easily understood scale to compare a commercial buildings energy use with similar buildings. What makes bEQ unique is the depth of the analysis upon which the rating is based.

Whats the Benefit?

The bEQ process: Consistently analyses a buildings energy use. Compares building performance to similar building types. Leads to informed decisions to manage a buildings energy use. Recommends actions to reduce energy use while screening for indoor environmental quality. Illustrates the benefit of making building equipment and system investments. Demonstrates corporate responsibility to employees, tenants, investors and the public. bEQ helps you respond to rising energy costs, improve the marketability of your property by differentiating it from others, and develop a business relationship with a professional whose concern is your buildings energy performance.

What Makes bEQ Different?

bEQ is unique. Designed to be technically sound yet easily understood, bEQ provides: bEQ In Operation Workbook of the complete building analysis. bEQ Certificate presenting key building performance factors for operations staff. bEQ Dashboard illustrating the level of In Operation performance. bEQ Plaque showing the building rating for public display. The ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit contained in bEQs energy assessment delivers analysis unavailable in other building labeling programs, and because it is conducted by a certified assessor, the building owner receives professional guidance to improve energy performance. Together, bEQ In Operation Workbook and bEQ Certificate precisely detail where and how energy is consumed and present solutions to increase building value and lower operating costs. This guidance enables the owner to make informed decisions about investments in equipment upgrades, re-commissioning and maintenance.

Who developed bEQ?

A team of leading building design and systems engineers developed bEQ. These experts drew upon years of experience in real world settings measuring and analyzing energy consumption, performing indoor environmental quality screening, estimating the impact on operating costs, and identifying investment options to increase a buildings value. ASHRAE, a not-for-profit organization focused on building system performance with 50,000 members worldwide, administers bEQ and developed the audit upon which bEQ is based.

Why Is the ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit Important?

These methodology and calculation procedures have been determined by building energy use experts to yield the most reliable and actionable results. They include: A Preliminary Energy-use Analysis (PEA). A walk-through survey for familiarization with building construction, equipment, operation, and maintenance. A meeting with the owner, operator and occupants to learn of special problems, planned improvements, operation or maintenance issues. A space function analysis to determine if efficiency may be affected by changes to the original functional intent of the building. Identification of low-cost/no-cost facility or operations and maintenance procedural changes and their approximate savings. A summary of special problems or needs, including possible operations and maintenance procedural revisions. Recommended potential capital improvements and their potential costs and savings. bEQs energy assessment also covers peak demand reduction and demand management opportunities, energy use from on-site renewables, and spot measurements related to indoor environmental quality. bEQ In Operation Workbook provides all the measurements taken for the bEQ energy assessment, and bEQ Certificate captures critical information for the operations staff enabling them to choose and carry out solutions for maximizing energy efficiency. bEQ Certificate can also be used by owners to comply with disclosure laws.

Who Can Register for bEQ?

Only certified Building Energy Assessment Professionals can register for bEQ. bEQ overlays a detailed collection of data upon the methodology and procedures outlined in the ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit. Persons submitting data for a bEQ rating must have demonstrated they have the knowledge and experience necessary. ASHRAEs Building Energy Assessment Professional certification requires that candidates meet eligibility requirements and pass an examination that tests understanding of the energy assessment body of knowledge. If an energy assessor lacks the knowledge and experience to know what to measure, how to measure, and how to analyze, the building owner risks not making the best investment decisions. No energy assessor certification program compares to the rigor of ASHRAEs Building Energy Assessment Professional certification.

What does bEQ cost?

The ratio of quality to cost is a strong incentive to participate in the bEQ process. The registration fee for bEQ is $500, and in return you get: 1. bEQ In Operation Workbook. 2. bEQ Certificate. 3. bEQ Dashboard. 4. A Graphic file for bEQ Plaque preparation showing the designated rating. The cost of professional services is separate and will be determined by you and the certified Building Energy Assessment Professional you select.
