General Information
Standards

TECO Max-E2 series, motor type AEHB described in this catalogue are HIGH EFFICIENCY
motors complying with Australian Standard AS1359.5-2000 Test Method B. Motors are
designed, manufactured and tested by TECO to the latest internal and Australian Standards.

Rating

The ratings listed in the performance data are for duty S1. This is defined as continuous
operation at nameplate current, ambient temperature of 40 C and altitude of up to 1000
metres. When operating at higher values, derating of the motor output may be necessary.
Please contact your nearest Teco office.

Construction

The stator frame is externally ribbed and in disposition IM1001 and 2001 has integrally
cast feet. The frame and the endshields are of cast iron providing exceptional strength and
resistance to corrosion. All components are machined to close tolerances to ensure both
accurate alignment and minimum vibration.

Terminal Box Enclosures

The terminal box enclosure is of cast iron, normally located at the right hand side of the
motor when viewing the shaft end and is of a diagonally split design to enable easy access
to the connections. The terminal box and lid are gasketed to provide for enclosure
protection and is rotatable in 4 90 steps. The cable gland plate is detachable and is
drilled and tapped to the dimensions shown in the tables to accept the incoming cables.

Cooling Fan and Cowl

The motors are surface cooled by means of an external shaft mounted bi-directional cooling
fan at the normal non drive end of the motor, defined as IC411. Up to and including
framesize 132, the cooling fan material is of polypropylene and for larger framesizes it is
of cast iron. The air flow is from the non drive end to the drive end irrespective of direction
of rotation and must not be impeded when the motor is operating.
The fan cowl is fabricated from a heavy guage sheet steel.

Bearings and Lubrication

In standard design, all 2 pole motors and 4 and 6 pole motors up to framesize 225, are
provided with single row deep groove ball bearings. Motors 4 and 6 pole speeds of
framesize 250 and larger have a cylindrical roller bearing at the drive end and a deep
groove ball bearing at the non drive end. Motors with cylindrical roller bearings are fitted
with shaft clamps to prevent damage during transportation due to external vibration.
The shaft clamps must be removed prior to energising the motor.
Bearings up to framesize 180 are of a double shielded type, prelubricated and do not
require maintenance for the life of the bearing. Larger framesizes are provided with a
pressure relief system, enabling lubrication of the bearing whilst the motor is in operation.
The bearings are grease lubricated, the required lubricant being a premium quality lithium
based grease containing oxidation and corrosion inhibitors. V-ring seals are provided at
the drive end and non drive end to protect the bearings against the entry of foreign
substance. The grade, quantity of grease and the frequency of lubrication periods are
indicated in the motor nameplates.

Winding Insulation System

All components that make up the winding insulation system meet as a minimum, the
requirements for classification F, e.g. temperature limit 155C. The design temperature rise
of the motors is below that for classification B, e.g. 80K, providing thermal capacity for
overload or higher ambient conditions.

Terminal Connections

A terminal block with six terminals is provided. Motors with outputs up to 4kW are supplied
star (Y) connected suitable for connection 415 volts and in delta connection, 240 volts
three phase. Above 4 kW they are delta connected for 415 volts direct on line or star/delta
compensator type starting.

Thermal Protection

To prevent damage to the motor winding caused by overload or too high ambient temperature,
PTC type thermistor detectors are inserted in the windings as standard 11kW and above.

Design, data and dimensions are subject to modification without notice.

Efficiency Information
Save Energy and Money

The protection of the environment, the reduction of greenhouse emission as well as the
need to conserve energy and to contain costs, are major quality aspects in the design of
these motors. With continuing rises in the cost to produce and distribute electrical power,
it is imperative that every endeavour be made to utilise higher efficiency processes. With
electric motors consuming more than 50 per cent of power generated for manufacturing,
substantial savings can be made through installing motors of higher efficiency.
THE COST OF ELECTRIC POWER TODAY REPRESENTS A MAJOR EXPENSE IN MOST
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES
Efficiency is the most critical component affecting the operating cost of the motor. It is the
measure of how well the motor converts electrical power that is purchased into useful work.
The induction motor consumes between 4 and 10 times its initial purchase price in
electricity operating cost per year. Considering that operating cost over its service life
(approx. 20 years), its purchase price represents about one per cent only of the total cost.
Reducing on-going running costs by installing higher efficiency motors then, clearly should
be the major part of the buying decision.

Motor Efficiency

The efficiency of the electric motor, expressed as a percentage, is determined by the ratio
of power consumed by the motor to overcome internal losses to the power converted to
useful mechanical energy. If for example, a motor produced only 80 per cent of the total
power input at the driveshaft, the remaining 20 per cent of the power consumed is lost.

Efficiency Information
Motor Efficiency (continued)

The motor efficiency is determined by its type, quality of design and the amount of active
materials used in its construction. For example, increasing the volume of winding, using
thinner steel laminations or more laminations with higher electrical properties in the stator
and rotor core, will reduce losses and improve the efficiency of the motor. Obviously, the
MAXE2 Premium Efficiency Motors will cost more than its Series AEEB, but their operating
costs will be less. Therefore, depending on its frequency of use, it will pay back the initial
cost difference and save on operating costs for the continuing lifetime of the motor.
The efficiency of an induction motor is determined by the ratio of power output to power
input.
This is expressed as follows:
Efficiency % = Output Power
Input Power

100

To ensure an accurate comparison of efficiencies between motor types, the manufacturing

standards to which the efficiencies were measured and the values referred to should be
stated.
TECO motors efficiencies are measured to Australian Standards AS 1359.102.1 1997
which follows the International Recommendations IEC 34 Part 2, 1972.

Operating Cost Savings

How much money can be saved in the first year of operation?

Typical cost savings of a 75 kW 4 pole motor can be calculated as follows:
S = kW N C (100 E1 100 E2)
S = Savings in $ per year
kW = Rated motor output (kW)
C = Energy cost per kW/hr
= $0.10
N = Running time in hrs/year

Conclusion

10

11

12 Months

When making a buying decision, every motor user should place a high priority
on the efficiency of the motor. A motor whose initial cost is low but whose
energy requirement is high, is not a cheap motor. The higher initial cost must be
paid once, but the higher operating cost must be paid for in the electricity bill
for the life of the motor.
Therefore, buying the cheaper priced lower efficiency motor is not a good
investment. The capital cost savings are far less than the reduced running costs
obtained from the higher efficiency motor.
