SHINING
BRIGHTER
MARCH 24 - 25
Finishing Well
It was a cool evening on October 20, 1968 in Mexico City Olympic Stadium. The sun had already set, and it seemed that the last of the marathon runners had arrived, completely exhausted. Over an hour earlier, Mamo Wolde of Ethiopia crossed the finish line as the winner of the 26-mile event. But then the sound of sirens split the air. The few who were still there turned and saw a slow-moving figure wearing number 36 with the colors of Tanzania. He was the last man to finish the race and had fallen earlier, injuring his knee and ankle. He grimaced with each hobbling step around the track. The few spectators who were there gave him a standing ovation. He did not finish first, but he finished well. When asked why he had continued, even though there was no chance of winning, he replied: My country did not send me 7,000 miles to start the race. They sent me 7,000 miles to finish it. May we also finish the race (2 Timothy 4:7). Paul challenged the Colossians, Say to Archippus, take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord that you may fulfill it (4:17). God gave us the wonderful ministry of this church, but we must fulfill it. Perhaps God has called you to a tough task. You may be bloodied in the battle, but you dont have to be beaten. We continue to face the challenge of Climbing Higher, Shining Brighter as we ask all who attend our church to pray about their participation in the gospel from the first day until now (Philippians 1:5). Buildings, budgets, personnel, and programs are only valid if they are tools for advancing the gospel of Christ and discipling believers for the glory of God. A large part of fulfilling the ministry involves being indebted to minister in material things and to put our seal on this fruit (Romans 15:27, 28). Continue to pray about the special offering on March 24 & 25 to significantly reduce our capital campaign debt and to ultimately cross the finish line.
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 service. Come and meet Pastor Wicker.
