Great tips for
expecting
parents
STATEPOINT MEDIA
New parents have a lot to think about. From set-
ting up the nursery, to picking out a name, there are
so many details to consider, both small and large.
Here are some tips to make your babys arrival
easier:
PRePaRe YouR HouseHold
Bringing home a baby is going to shake things up
for every member of your household, so you should
get everyone ready for the change.
Doctors suggest exposing pets to the smells and
sounds of babies in advance of your childs arrival.
Playing a recording of baby noises, and letting your
pooch smell baby lotions will help him know what to
expect.
If you have an older child, have an age-appro-
priate discussion with them about what it will
mean to be a big brother or sister.
Dont forget to have your house clean and
ready for the new arrival. Do laundry in ad-
vance of the due date so you wont worry about
having plenty of fresh clothes and towels, and
prepare several meals that can be frozen and
stored so you wont have to cook.
THRow a sHoweR
The single best way to make sure you have
everything youll need and want for your new
baby is to throw a shower. Motivate your guests
to come bearing beautiful gifts for your little one by
inviting them with unique baby shower invitations
from an online stationery store like Minted.com.
Be sure to mention your registry, so attendees
dont double up on presents. Aside from big ticket

As you can imagine we are suffering,
along with many other organizations

of a lack of stable revenue coming into
our club. With this in mind we would
like to mention the numerous contri-
butions to our community both by our
Ladies Auxiliary and the Legionnaires,
such as Funeral Luncheons, Children
Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas with San-
ta, Food Pantry, Back Roads Christmas
for the needy. We do luncheons/Bingo
twice a year with the Veterans from the
Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. We
have Bingo twice a week for the commu-
nity, Mens on Thursday and Womens

ous contributions to local events.

day, March 24, 2012, we will be spon-
soring a Special Beneft Dinner from 6

will be a Swiss steak dinner with all the

be $7.95, music will be provided as well
from 8 to 11 p.m.
We are in hopes that we see many
of our community members on the

MARRIAGE LICENSE APPLICATIONS
items like cribs, and strollers, consider
adding the little essentials youll need,
like baby wipes, diapers, and bibs.
While these items arent as fun, they
are just as necessary.
Be Informed
You may think you know every-
thing there is to know about being a
parent, especially if this isnt your
frst child. But new research often im-
proves health and safety recommen-
dations for newborns. For example,
did you know infants should sleep on
their backs in a crib with no pillows or
stuffed animals? According to the US
Consumer Product Safety Commis-
sion, more than 11 million cribs have
been recalled since 2007. So if youre
planning to use a hand-me-down,
make sure its safe.
After The Baby Arrives
Dont forget to keep a camera ready
for all those frsts. Photos are a great
way to share your memories with your
loved ones. A cute picture of you and
your newborn will make an excellent
birth announcement.
New parents should also remem-
ber to eat right, get rest and exercise
daily. Healthy habits will make you a
more effective parent.
Whether its your frst child, or
your ffth, the exhilaration, and the
stress, of welcoming a new baby into
your home never goes away. Howev-
er, you can make life easier.
BABY
CONTINuED FROM PAGE 5
Myth 1: Babies need to poop at
least once a day.
Parents often think a baby is con-
stipated when hes not, says Andrew
Adesman, M.D., chief of develop-
mental and behavioral pediatrics at
Schneider Childrens Hospital in New
York and author of 2009s BabyFacts.
Newborns often have several bowel
movements a day, but they may poop
as little as every three to four days at
about 2 months to 3 months of age,
he says.
Myth 2: Babies should be bathed
daily.
The truth is, bathing removes
moisture from your babys delicate
skin, which can make it dry and irri-
tated.
Myth 3: Babies who achieve
milestones early are gifted.
When a child frst walks or talks
has little or no bearing on his later
successes, research shows. Many
parents support the idea of giftedness
at birth, but this is not supported by
the evidence, says Adesman. In fact,
in some cases, early achievements
may indicate a potential problem
for example,showing an inclination
to be left- or right-handed before 18
months of age (children should use
both hands equally until this age).
Myth 4: Touching your babys
soft spot can hurt his brain.
The fontanel, or soft spot, at the
front of your babys head is a skin-
covered opening in the skull that
pulsates, frightening some parents.
Theres a presumption of vulner-
ability, but the brain is actually quite
well protected, Adesman says. The
front fontanel typically closes at about
1 year of age, while the smaller soft
spot in the back of the head usually
closes at 2 months to 3 months.

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS
SYNDICATE
Each year, organized groups of crim-
inals target and victimize thousands of
Americans by telephone, e-mails and
through the mail but you can protect
yourself and your family.
The United States Postal Inspection
Service has documented over $42 mil-
lion in losses from this type of fraud. In
some cases, people have lost their homes
and their savings by chasing the dream
of a big lottery jackpot.
Inspector Paul Krenn advises, One
of the main techniques scammers use
is a foreign lottery scam, where they
tell you to send money to pay for taxes
or fees. If youve received a suspected
fraud via mail or if the mail was used
to continue a crime started online, over
the phone or in person, report it to The
U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
What to Watch out For
Here are a few facts and signs to con-
sider:
n Scammers are using new tech-
niques, such as legitimate mailing lists
and new technology. They spoof caller
ID to make it look as if theyre calling
from the U.S. or even a government
agency.
n Older consumers, especially shut-
ins, are often a favorite target for for-
eign lottery fraud. Look out for checks
written or money wired internationally;
a telephone that rings constantly; or a
stack of lottery or sweepstakes entries.
n Scammers are constantly updat-
ing their methods. One of their latest
tricks is to convince you that youve won
a foreign lottery and all you need to do
is wire a small processing fee (relative to
the gigantic prize). Dont youll never
see that money again.
nBeware of calls from foreign coun-
tries, especially if theyre calling an el-
derly person.
n If you or a loved one receives an
unsolicited offer, hang up the phone or
delete the e-mail.
nDont give out personal or fnancial
information to anyone over the Internet
or phone.
nNever wire or send money to any-
one, anywhere, who says you have won a
foreign lottery.
nDont let anyone pressure you into
making an immediate decision.
nNever purchase anything until you
get all information in writing.
Where to Get help
To help people recognize and pre-
vent frauds and scams, The U.S. Postal
Inspection Service set up a website,
www.deliveringtrust.com. At the site,
you can educate yourself, share the in-
formation with family and friends, and
report suspected fraud sent through the
U.S. mail.
Dont fall for foreign lottery fraud
BEING CAREFUL: Foreign lottery fraud, a criminal practice where scammers entice U.S. consumers to send money
and even provide bank and credit card information, is a growing problem that can have devastating and long-lasting ef-
fects on victims and their families.

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS
SYNDICATE
Each year, organized groups of crim-
inals target and victimize thousands of
Americans by telephone, e-mails and
through the mail but you can protect
yourself and your family.
The United States Postal Inspection
Service has documented over $42 mil-
lion in losses from this type of fraud. In
some cases, people have lost their homes
and their savings by chasing the dream
of a big lottery jackpot.
Inspector Paul Krenn advises, One
of the main techniques scammers use
is a foreign lottery scam, where they
tell you to send money to pay for taxes
or fees. If youve received a suspected
fraud via mail or if the mail was used
to continue a crime started online, over
the phone or in person, report it to The
U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
What to Watch out For
Here are a few facts and signs to con-
sider:
n Scammers are using new tech-
niques, such as legitimate mailing lists
and new technology. They spoof caller
ID to make it look as if theyre calling
from the U.S. or even a government
agency.
n Older consumers, especially shut-
ins, are often a favorite target for for-
eign lottery fraud. Look out for checks
written or money wired internationally;
a telephone that rings constantly; or a
stack of lottery or sweepstakes entries.
n Scammers are constantly updat-
ing their methods. One of their latest
tricks is to convince you that youve won
a foreign lottery and all you need to do
is wire a small processing fee (relative to
the gigantic prize). Dont youll never
see that money again.
nBeware of calls from foreign coun-
tries, especially if theyre calling an el-
derly person.
n If you or a loved one receives an
unsolicited offer, hang up the phone or
delete the e-mail.
nDont give out personal or fnancial
information to anyone over the Internet
or phone.
nNever wire or send money to any-
one, anywhere, who says you have won a
foreign lottery.
nDont let anyone pressure you into
making an immediate decision.
nNever purchase anything until you
get all information in writing.
Where to Get help
To help people recognize and pre-
vent frauds and scams, The U.S. Postal
Inspection Service set up a website,
www.deliveringtrust.com. At the site,
you can educate yourself, share the in-
formation with family and friends, and
report suspected fraud sent through the
U.S. mail.
Dont fall for foreign lottery fraud
BEING CAREFUL: Foreign lottery fraud, a criminal practice where scammers entice U.S. consumers to send money
and even provide bank and credit card information, is a growing problem that can have devastating and long-lasting ef-
fects on victims and their families.

properties and to ensure that the structure and uses in this
District are compatible with and protect these unique attri-
butes.
SECTION 5.15 PERMIT APPLICATIONS

SECTION 5.60 RIPARIAN ACCESS
The following restrictions are intended to limit the number
of users of waterway, lake or river frontage in order to pre-

preserve the quality of recreational use of all waters within
the township.
A. In all zoning districts there shall be at least fty feet
(50) of lake, river, stream, or all tributaries frontage as mea-
sured along the body of water for each single family home,
dwelling unit, cottage, condominium unit, site condominium
unit, or apartment unit utilizing or accessing the lake or
stream frontage.

unit, or apartment unit for each fty feet (50) of lake, river,
stream or tributaries frontage in such common lake, river,
stream or tributaries front area, as measured along the body
of water.
C. Any multi-unit residential development shall have
not more than one (1) dock for each fty feet (50) of lake or
river frontage as measured along the body of water in any
zoning district in the township. All such docks and docking
or mooring shall also comply with all other applicable town-
ship ordinances.
D. The above restrictions shall apply to all lot and par-
cels on or abutting any lake, river, stream or tributaries in all
zoning districts, regardless of whether access to the lake or
river waters shall be by easement, park, common-fee own-
ership, single-fee ownership, condominium arrangement,
license, or lease.
E. In all zoning districts, no lake or river access, boat
ramp, shore station, dock, boat launch, or shoreline abutting
a lake shall be utilized for commercial, business, outdoor
recreational (or entertainment) facilities, institutional, or
nonresidential or non-agricultural uses or purposes unless
such is authorized pursuant to a special use approval or as
a planned unit development (PUD), and complies with the
requirements of the District where the property is located.
F. The lake and river access and use regulation con-
tained in this Section shall be fully applicable to all planned
unit development (PUD) and special use projects or devel-

other keyhole development regulations.
H. In addition to the above limitations, no easement,
private park, common area, lot or access property abutting
or adjoining a lake, river or stream shall be used to permit
access to the lake or stream for more than one (1) single-
family home, dwelling unit, condominium unit, site condo-
minium unit, apartment unit or any other use unless such
additional access use is approved as a special use or as a
planned unit development (PUD).
I. If a property is located within a zoning district where
the minimum lot width requirements is greater than fty feet
(50), the minimum water frontage requirements of subsec-

which does not abut or connect into an existing body of
water. However, no pond shall be created or enlarged if
the resulting pond will be over two acres in size unless a
Special Land Use approval occurs. Agricultural uses will be
governed by the Right to Farm Act.
3. The lawful creation or enlargement of an arti-
cial lake which does not abut or connect into an existing lake
or river. However, an articial lake shall not be created or
enlarged if the resulting lake would be over two (2) acres in
size unless a Special Land Use Approval occurs. Agricultural
uses will be governed by the Right to Farm Act.
4. The lawful dredging of an existing canal or chan-
nel pursuant to applicable state laws and permit require-
ments.
K. No parcel shall have any wetland altered, drained or
lled so as to accommodate access or increase its water
frontage.
Addition to Section 5.50 Water front properties (C)(11)
11. No stairs or stairways, tram, deck, or viewing
platform shall be commenced or installed between the river
or lake and a dwelling (or building site) prior to the issuance
of a written permit by the Township Zoning Administrator.
The Township Zoning Administrator may attach reasonable

Insurance is everywhere. Home insurance, car
insurance, liability insurance. Mortgage insurance.
Dental and optical insurance. By some counts the
average American family spends up to 35% of its
income on insurance. You can spend thousands every
month on family medical insurance alone.
Insuring new stuff. Even companies that sell
brand new stuff want us to buy insurance to insure
that their brand new stuff will work the way they
tell us it will, for more than 90 days. They call that
Extended Warranty Coverage. But its just more
insurance. And its a huge money maker for the
insurer companies because the likelihood youll ever
use it is negligible.
Michigan law mandates default warranties. When
you spend hundreds or thousands for a new television,
snowplow, or washing machine, shouldnt it work
for years with just normal wear and tear? Back in the
1940s legislators across America thought so, which
is how the Uniform Commercial Code became
law in 1952. The Uniform Commercial Code was
developed to harmonize laws governing transactions
in commercial goods in all 50 states. The online
Wikipedia explains why we needed it: goods may
be manufactured in State A, warehoused in State B,
sold from State C and delivered in State D. The UCC
achieved the goal of substantial uniformity in
commercial laws and, at the same time, allowed the
states the exibility to meet local circumstances...
Covered property. The Uniform Commercial
Code, or UCC, deals only with moveable personal
property, not with real estate. It governs bulk sales,
securities (like stocks), negotiation of loans, car
leases, bank deposits, the transfer of money between
banks, bills of lading, transporting goods between
states, and sales of goods with security interests/
collateral. And the Code contains implied, default,
assumed warranties that cover stuff we buy.
Assumed warranties. In a merchants sale of goods,
unless the packaging, contract or Warranty literature
states that the new product is not merchantable, is not
warranted or is not t for its ordinary and obvious
intended purpose, then by law it is assumed that that
new product is merchantable, it is warranted, and
it is t for its obvious and intended purpose. Those
assumed warranties are in the Uniform Commercial
Code. They last for 4-6 years in most states. So if
youve bought a new vehicle, television or washing
machine, whether she liked it or not the seller gave
you a warranty that it would work as expected, and
for four years. These are warranties that are tough for
her to get out of. Also, we enforce express warranties.
So paint that expressly touts one-coat coverage has
to cover in one coat or youll get your money back.
Should you buy an extended warranty? The big
rst step is to read the manufacturers warranty to see
what it gives you, and to see if the manufacturer has
limited any assumed and implied warranties. Some
cannot be limited. But if not, consider the company.
If youre not familiar with it, ask your local or state
consumer protection ofce or Better Business Bureau
if they have any complaints against the company. Be
sure to save your receipt and warranty to document
the date of your purchase and prove that youre
the original owner in the case of a nontransferable
warranty. You dont need to register a warranty,
not by mail or online, unless the warranty says you
must. And without fail, do regular maintenance and
inspections because not doing them could void any
warranty, extended or not. If you do these things,
youll probably never use an extended warranty.
A hint Buy one-coat coverage paint, and dont
let the paint drip on the label. If Hometown Home
HomeRepair Companys paint doesnt cover in
one coat like the label said it would, ask nicely for
another, free, can, for your second coat. Take the
empty can. Smile. Point to the label.

Health Matters
Walk To
A Better You
By Tresa Erickson
Your time on the couch in front of the TV
has come to an end, and youre ready to
get t. How you go about this journey is
up to you. You could take a martial arts
class, you could take up running, you
could swim at the local pool, you could
enroll in a dance class or you could
simply walk. Thats right. Walking half
an hour on most days of the week will
help you get into shape and stay healthy,
and unlike some other disciplines, walk-
ing is easy and requires little in the way
of equipment. Interested in walking your
way to a better you? Read on!
Before you get started, you need to take
an assessment of your health. Do you
have some health issues? If so, you
should make an appointment with your
physician to ensure you are healthy
enough to start a tness walking pro-
gram. The same goes if you are over the
age of 65.
Next, you need to gather the right equip-
ment. Walking doesnt require much, just
some comfortable clothes and a good pair
of walking shoes. You will want shoes in
good condition that t well. You may also
want to purchase a water bottle to carry
with you on longer stretches. This will
ensure you dont get dehydrated.
You also need to consider where you
will be walking. Clearly you will want
somewhere safe, such as a nearby park,
gym or track. You can also walk in your
neighborhood or on a local trail. If pos-
sible, try to nd a buddy. There is safety
in numbers, and having someone to walk
with will keep you motivated.
When you are ready to begin, go slowly.
Always take the time to warm up and cool
down to prevent injury. Once you have
warmed up with some stretches, go for a
brisk 10-minute walk. Do this every day
for a week, and then tack on another ve
minutes onto your walks the next week.
Continue to do this until you have built
up enough strength and stamina to go
the distance desired.
While you are walking, pay attention
to your stature. Are you standing up
straight? Are your shoulders relaxed and
your head held high? Are your abdominal
muscles tight? When done right, walking
can improve posture and slim the waist-
line.
As you build your strength and stamina,
you can pick up the pace and go for lon-
ger stretches at a time. If you are looking
to shed some pounds, you will want to
walk briskly for 45 to 60 minutes ve
days a week. Of course, keeping up the
program could turn out to be the hard-
est part. Look to your walking buddy for
support and just think of how good youll
look and feel within a few months!

Health Matters
What a lovely day it is to go for a bike ride. The sun is
shining, the birds are beckoning and you cant wait to get
outside. You change clothes, lace up your shoes and head
out the door. Wait a minute! Where is your bike helmet?
Bike helmets are essential for preventing head injuries dur-
ing an accident or fall. There are many brands available.
Not all are constructed well or approved by the Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or the American Na-
tional Standards Institute (ANSI). When shopping, look for
a quality helmet with the safety seal of the CPSC or ANSI.
Try on every helmet of interest and make sure it ts com-
fortably. The helmet should be snug, allowing for very little
movement all around. It should rest at on your head and
cover the top of your forehead. The straps should help keep
the helmet in place and form a V shape under your ears. If
the helmet tilts in any way, you may need a smaller size.
For visibility, white or bright-colored helmets are best.
Some brands also come with headlights for optimum vis-
ibility. Just make sure whatever helmet you select does not
impede your vision.
A quality helmet is a must for bike riding, but it will do you
little good if you dont wear it. Set an example for your kids
and strap it on for every excursion, even if you are just go-
ing for a short ride around the block. Check that the straps
are below your chin, not to the side. Teach your kids how
to wear their helmets, insist they use them and encourage
them not to play with their helmets on. The straps can pose
a choking hazard on the playground.
Treat your bike helmet with care. Clean it regularly and put
it away when not in use. Check the condition of it routinely
and replace it as needed, in particular after a bike accident.
Just because you dont detect any damage to your helmet
does not mean there isnt any. Replace it before your next
ride.
You may have never had a bike accident, but doesnt mean
you wont. Just one little slip on a patch of wet pavement or
a rocky path can lead to a crash, which can result in a head
injury if you arent wearing a helmet. Buy a bike helmet,
use it properly, and it could just save your life!

Life Changing Events
Most of us have experienced life changing events. Sometime these events occur as a kick in the head, like an illness, an
accident, or the shock of the death of someone close. When an event like this happens we have two choices. Either we can
grab on to the new, learn from the event, and grow into someone greater and better than before, or we can hang onto the
past, get stuck, and mired down in our old thoughts.
Sometime the life changing things are small and subtle. Often we do not realize how important that event was to our future
until we look at it later. I have had a couple small events occur recently that were so profound that they will forever change
how I do things personally and professionally.
Meeting Pam McDonald, author of The Apo E Gene Diet, has been one of those life changing events. She taught me several
fundamental things: First, the importance of eating every three hours, and, second, the importance of exercise, both anaerobic
and aerobic. For my whole career, I have struggled to nd natural ways to help people normalize their weight, balance their
cholesterol, and prevent chronic diseases. All kinds of diets and exercise programs, hundreds of them, offer hope to people
to nd the answers to these questions. Sometimes they work, but not for everyone. Somehow we think that one plan should
work for everyone. But that is not how it is.
After we eat something, food enzymes (contained in the food itself) and digestive enzymes (made in the saliva glands,
stomach, and pancreas) break down that food from Carbohydrates (Starches and Sugars) into Glucose, from Fats into Fatty
Acids, and from Proteins into Amino Acids. These basic elements are used for energy and building material.
The carbohydrates (sugars) are used for immediate energy. Fats are used for long term fuel and for building cell membranes.
Protein can be fuel, but is used mostly for structural needs. The brain and nervous system use only sugars for fuel. Working
muscle uses all three, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, but resting muscle gets its energy from stored fat, not from what we
have just eaten. After three hours of not eating, we need energy. If we do not eat, the body begins to feed on itself. But, at
rst, it does not feed on fat stores. It feeds rst on muscle. The Atkins Diet Plan promoted checking your
urine for ketones to see if you were burning fat. The fact is that ketones come more from break done
of muscle, not fats. Much of the rapid weight loss of Atkins comes from muscle loss.
So when we do not eat every three hours, we begin to burn muscle, reducing our lean muscle mass.
This means that later there will be less muscle to burn stored fat. So ultimately when we intermittently
starve, we will have less muscle to burn stored fat and we will gradually accumulate more fat. To prevent
our body from feeding on its own fat burning engine, the muscle, we need to eat every three hours.
Each meal and snack must contain all three, Carbohydrates, Fats, and Proteins. So, do not eat just an
apple for a snack, have some protein and fats with it, such as nut butter. How much Carbohydrate, Fats,
and Protein to eat with each meal and snack can be determined by your ApoE Genotype.
Next week we will talk about my least favorite, yet most important subject, exercise.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
Lakeview Youth Clinic Speaks Out on
Importance Funding and Supporting
School-Linked Clinics
Staff and Student Representatives
Travel to State Capitol March 13
LAKEVIEW, Mich., March 7, 2012 On Tuesday, March 13,
staff of Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospitals Lakeview Youth Clinic
and student representatives from Lakeview Community Schools
will travel to the State Capitol in Lansing in conjunction with the
School-Community Health Alliance of Michigans (SCHA-MI) An-
nual Advocacy Day.
The Lakeview Youth Clinic is a member of SCHA-MI, a collabora-
tion of individuals and organizations that represent and support
school-based and school-linked health care. http://www.scha-mi.
org/index.html
Those representing the Lakeview Youth Clinic will have the unique
opportunity to meet with State Representative, Dave Camp (R-
Midland), and share the importance of school-linked health care in
greater Lakeview, as well as the difference the Clinic has already
made since opening in November 2011.
They will be involved with discussions surrounding policy updates
in this eld and how they may affect services to the community.
We are thrilled at this opportunity to meet with Representative
Camp and share more about how the Lakeview Youth Clinic is
beneting local adolescents, said Jodi Aniszko, Program Man-
ager for the Clinic. Its vital that our local, state and national
leaders understand the importance of our clinic, and others like it,
in order to maintain and increase support and funding.
The Lakeview Youth Clinic is a school-linked adolescent health
center. Housed in the Kelsey Hospital Medical Specialty Center
(420 South Lincoln Street) the Clinic comes as result of a recent
grant obtained by Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital from the
Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).
The Clinic takes a team approach to care, allowing the adolescent,
his or her parents and the healthcare provider to become partners
in decision making. All employees of Lakeview Youth Clinic are
highly involved in the surrounding communities and have access
to resources such as social service agencies and human services
organizations. The Lakeview Youth Clinic is open to adolescents
ages 10 - 21 from all communities.
