TOTAL ALLEGIANCE
In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenantas a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at Easteroccupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship between two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of Gods protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship with Jesusritualized in baptismdemands a total allegiance to him and none other. 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary selfdenial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Families across the globe are affected by war, natural disasters, extreme poverty and human trafficking. Many family members are separated for long periods of time because of migration issues. Because of this, unaccompanied minors are often exploited. Catholic Relief Services values families. It works to provide for basic human needs, to protect children and reunite families. It also encourages legislation that reflects the importance of the family in society. The annual collection for Catholic Relief Services helps persons across the world. Families on every continent are assisted no matter their ethnic background, no matter their needs. Please be generous with your contribution to this collection. Thank you for helping families in need. May the Lord bless you.

Build a Better You. Through Living the Eucharist Retreat Saturday, April 28th
9:30-2:30 in the PLC and Church We conclude our Lenten Parish Renewal with a retreat on April 28, 2012. This is a half day retreat focusing on how to respond to Gods promise made to us, I will always be with you. The first half of the day begins with prayer, discussion, and followed with lunch and Adoration. All parishioners are invited to the retreat whether you participated in the small groups or not. This is a wonderful way to commence the Easter Season. We need musicians, lectors, prayer leaders, and kitchen help for the retreat. Please contact Eileen Maggiore by email at eileen@ctklombard.org.
Religious Freedom Sunday Be informed. Be heard. Join I-CAN! Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network
The Catholic Conference of Illinois (CCI) was created in 1969 to be the public policy voice of the bishops and the Church. CCI interacts with the state legislature, the Governors office and all elements of state government to promote and defend the interests of the Church. CCI is well known within the halls of government, but outside of the Capitol building, our public profile is low. Few lay Catholics realize they have a representative a voice in what goes on in state government. The bishops of Illinois and CCI want to remedy this situation. We want parishioners to know that CCI exists as an active and informational service to the Church and her followers. To help increase awareness of CCI and what is going on in Springfield, we are creating the Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network or I-CAN. Pews cards will be available and collected at all Masses on Religious Freedom Sunday so that interested parishioners can sign up to receive email updates on state issues affecting the Church. Sign up for I-CAN! www.catholicconferenceofillinois.org www.facebook.com/CatholicConferenceofIllinois
