67th Annual West Virginia Wing Conference

The Martinsburg Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol took top honors at the recent annual West Virginia Wing CAP Conference and Awards Banquet. The conference was held in Charleston and was attended by over 180 CAP members from throughout the state. Twelve cadets and three senior leaders from the Martinsburg Squadron attended the event and represented the local unit.

2008 Spirit of America over Martinsburg Air Show

When spectacular weather brought out an estimated 40,000 people Sept. 20-21 to the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport for the Spirit of America over Martinsburg Air Show, Martinsburg Composite Squadron members were waiting to not only assist the crowds but also to promote Civil Air Patrol and its Drug Demand Reduction campaign. The 21 senior members and 13 cadets spent most of their weekend parking thousands of cars during the air show. The squadron received a lot of compliments for its efficient, rapid handling of the traffic into the airport grounds on both days. The unit also manned a recruiting and Drug Demand Reduction booth throughout the air show. About 1,000 people visited the booth and aircraft display, which featured the squadron's Cessna 182-T and a restored 1940 Stinson CAP aircraft. On display as well was the Drug Demand Reduction truck, a specially marked vehicle provided by Lt. Col. Jett Mayhew, DDR national Team Leader, and 1st Lt. Walter Murphy, assistant DDR coordinator for the Middle East Region.

"The community was very receptive to the Martinsburg Squadron booth that included DDR printed materials and activities, as well as photos and print material on the squadron's history (from 1943 to the present)," Murphy said. "The parents and children alike thanked us for providing this service." The DDR display included several Fatal Vision Goggles activities to simulate the effects of various levels of alcohol consumption on perception and reaction. The air show feature a number of aircraft on display, including a C5A, A-10, F-86, T-6, T-34 and MH53 helicopter. Performing acts included a P-51, P-40, several stunt aircraft, wing walkers and a U.S. Air Force F-16. Between shows a few of the Martinsburg cadets were able to talk with a couple of stunt pilots who were former CAP members.

Farewell Jennie
Following the September 30th meeting, a surprise going away party was held, in the 167th Airlift Wing dining facility, for C/ CMSgt Jennie Kroening, who will be moving to Colorado. Jennie was presented with a cake decorated with the Colorado state flag and quarter. She was also given a card and a CD with squadron photo memories and newsletters for the last two years. After enjoying some refreshments, the squadrons color guard performed a flag folding ceremony in honor of their departing commander.

Martinsburg Color Guard Wins 1st Place

On Saturday, October 18th, the 29th Annual Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival Grand Feature Parade, was held in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Beautiful autumn weather brought out large crowds (estimated Photo by 2Lt Dirk Stansbury at 15,000) that packed the two mile parade route which wound through the town. Among the approximate 200 units participating was the Martinsburg Composite Squadron Color Guard and their Drug Demand Reduction Banner Carriers, who led the third division. Out of numerous color guard entries, the first place award and a check for $100 went to the Martinsburg Color Guard. An Evening with the Apollo 8 Astronauts

On Thursday, November 13th, Maj Jeff Schrock, WV Wing PAO, Capt Russ Voelker, 2Lt Dirk and C/Amn Ty Stansbury traveled to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, in Washington DC, to attend the Annual John H. Glenn Lecture. This year it featured the Apollo 8.Astronauts. In late December 1968, the Apollo 8 crew of Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the

first humans to leave Earth and journey to another world. They spent 20 hours orbiting the Moon, and then made the flight back home. In lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, the crew delivered to a world audience a moving TV broadcast in which they read from the Book of Genesis. During the mission, the three astronauts witnessed something no other human had ever seen--Earth rising over the lunar surface.

The following cadets received the Red Service Ribbon, which is presented to those who serve for two years in good standing: C/TSgt Chris Householder, C/SrA John Dye, C/MSgt Joe Dye, C/SSgt Brandon Might and C/MSgt Ryan As we come to the end of the calendar year at the Martinsburg Composite SquadMiller ron, we have a lot to be thankful for. During this years WV Wing Conference and Banquet, the squadron received many prestigious awards but the one that I am ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ most thankful for is the No Mishap award. To date, we have had no safety acciMajor Dave Kelly, the WV Wings Air Force Reserve Assistance Officer gave dents or incidents this year. Though this is something to be thankful for and very proud of, as a squadron we should not get a false sense of complacency and not a brief presentation at the October 7th meeting keep safety our number one priority as we move together into 2009. During 2008, our squadron has been very busy with taking delivery of a brand new C-182 with the Garmin G-1000 avionics, as well as working countless hours on our hanger. In 2009, we are going to continue to work on the new hanger, building out the inteHangar Update rior, so that we can have a meeting place that we can call our own. As we strive to do our C.A.P. missions in 2009 to the best of our ability, we always need to put safety as our number one priority.

On December 4th, 2Lt Dirk Stansbury appeared before the Berkeley County Commission. He was there to request that the building permit fees, for the build out of the interior of the hangar, be waived. After a brief discussion the commissioners voted unanimously to approve the request. Capt Gary Gourley and Capt Russ Voelker were also in attendance.

Adopt-A-Highway Detail
November 22nd THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE ADOPT-AHIGHWAY PROJECT!
It was another very successful litter pick-up day despite cool temperatures. We had 20 members who helped clean up Paynes Ford Road. 12 senior members and 8 cadets. It is significant to note that most of the members who participated today were new members of the unit and that this was the largest turn out of members we have ever had! We picked up a total of 23 bags of litter and three car tires along the two mile route. Weve completed our 11th year of picking up litter along Paynes Ford Road and brought our totals over that period of time to 33,880 pounds, or 16.94 tons, of trash picked up along that road. The squadron can be very proud of our accomplishment and again, THANKS to everyone who helped over the years, and especially those who assisted this morning. Great Job!

Salvation Armys Angel Program

Jonah Rock and Cadet Staff. Sgt Nick Keefe behind Christmas gifts that the squadron provided for a pair of needy local youngsters through the Salvation Army Angels Program. Clothing, toys and candy were purchased with donations, then wrapped and delivered to the local Salvation Army by squadron members. The Martinsburg unit also hopes to assist in the distribution of the gifts later this month.

MER Cadet Warrior Challenge

December 5-7th

Nine cadets and two senior members from the squadron attended the Middle East Region's Cadet Warrior Competition and Training Leaders of Cadets programs on December 5 - 7. The events were held at Fort Pickett, VA. More than sixty cadets and twenty seniors members from the MER were in attendance. The Cadet Warrior program consisted of a land navigation course and a leaders reaction course on the base. The cadets were assigned teams and scored points based on their teamwork and problem solving skills. While land navigation proved more difficult, most all of the teams successfully completed the leaders reaction course. Cadets also had the option of competing individually in the Air Force physical fitness test. This event guaranteed a good night's rest for those who signed up. When not shuttling cadets from station to station, 2Lt Adam Sanders and 1st Lt Steve Petty attended the TLC program, learning best practices in administering the cadet program. According to 2Lt Sanders, "Our squadron should be very proud of our cadets for their outstanding performance and conduct during the weekend. The cadets were safe and lived up to their reputation of being the distinguished squadron of the year." The cadets particularly enjoyed the Land Navigation and Leadership Reaction courses, said 1st Lt Petty. They were very enthusiastic and excited when we picked them up from these activities. They represented themselves and the squadron very well.
