Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb. First of all, let us praise to the Almighty Allah SWT, because of His Blessing we are able to attend this English speech contest. Secondly, may peace be upon the prophet Muhammad Saw who has guided us from the darkness into the brightness. I would also like to say many thanks to the juries and MC who have given me opportunity to deliver an English speech in front of you all. Ladies and Gentlemen, The title of my speech is We must be sure that we can solve global warming Global warming is a recently evolved, insidious anthropogenic disaster. It is the documented historical warming of Earth's near-surface temperature. Global warming came into existence in mid 20th century and has been progressing at an unprecedented rate ever since. Global warming is sometimes used synonymously with the term "climate change". However a basic difference exists between the two. Climate change is identified state of change of climate which persists for a decade or longer, whereas Global warming is the combined effect of man made green house gases and change in solar irradiance. Global warming has emerged as a humongous problem facing the fast and ever growing world. Global Warming occurs as a result of increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. These gases do now allow all the radiations from the Earth to escape back info space. This is known as the Greenhouse Effect. This trapped radiation or heat helps to keep the Earth at a constant temperature. Greenhouse effect is thus very important to main the temperature of the Earth at a habitable level. Over the past few 100 years, human have been burning trees and fissile fuels, thereby releasing millions of tones of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The increased level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has caused the temperature of the Earth to rise. This, in turn, causes more water to evaporate into the atmosphere. Water vapor is also very good at absorbing heat. This cause the Earths atmosphere to become even warmer. Scientist has called this effect Global Warming. They have warned that Global Warming could shift rainfall patterns, raise the sea level and alter the ecological balance. A. Causes of Global Warming and Mechanism As mentioned earlier, it is a combined effect. Over the years of development of new and improved products for living, their has been an neglected, unwanted rise in gases that are causing gradual destruction of the protective blanket around our globe i.e. the Ozone layer. Global warming is an uncalled for event following employment of harmful greenhouse gases

such as Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), , Methane (CH4), and aerosols such as Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), Hydrocarbons (CHC), etc. These gases form free radicals which combine with Ozone and convert it to O2 and other non-protective gases. Thus solar energy which was impermeable to the Earth's atmosphere due to the unyielding Ozone layer, is clear of all the obstacles. B. Effects of Global Warming According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the decade of the 2000s (20002009) is the warmest on record. The global mean surface temperature for 2009 is currently estimated at 0.44C/0.79F above the 1961-1990 annual average of 14.00C/57.20F. Global warming is a potential health hazard. The deadly effects of global warming include 1. Polar Ice is melting will raise sea levels and make global ecosystem out of balance. 2. Increased probability of draught and heat waves. 3. Increased incidence of hurricanes leading to disruption of ecology, loss of lives and damage to property. 4. High prevalence of cancers, especially skin cancers, in areas which have thin Ozone layer, example : Australia 5. Economic consequences due to impending disasters. C. Control of Global Warming Every individual can participate in protection of our environment. The WHO slogan "Think globally. Act locally" is the biggest proof that all of us can help in saving our Mother Earth from the deleterious effects of Global warming. The cumulative efforts will make a huge difference to the present pathetic conditions. The measures we can take are:

Switch to energy efficient appliances Turn off air conditioners when not in use Have a solar water heater Recycle often Use eco-friendly products Be a catalyst. Talk, encourage and participate in local movements Plant more trees Use renewable sources of energy

Global warming is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. To protect the health and economic well being of current and future generations, we must reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases by using the technology, know-how, and practical solutions already at our disposal.

Ladies and Gentlemen,...... Tropical deforestation is the largest source of emissions for many developing countries, but slowing deforestation can't solve the climate problem by itself. As forest-rich developing countries step up to take responsibility for reducing their emissions, all industrialized nations should not only support their efforts but, most importantly, reduce their own emissions and lead efforts to avert dangerous climate change. For years we have heard so much about the causes of climate change, that weve missed the fact that there are simple, practical solutions that can slow this growing problem. Technologies exist today that can cut emissions of heat-trapping gases and make a real difference in the health of our planet. And these solutions will be good for our economy, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and enhance our energy. Something as simple as walking instead of taking the car will help reduce pollution. As well as stoping pollution, you are giving yourself excercise, something important our bodies. So the next time you getinto your car, or your motorbike, think do i have to ake this journey by vehicle or can i walk ? When you are at home, and your getting a little cold. Put a jumper and do not adjust the heating. The extra heat produced our homes also affects the planet. So try wearing an extra layer in winter. If possible , buy your fruits and vegetables form local suppliers. And to try avoid imported goods. The more foreign foods that we import the more pollutions from aeroplanes and boats it will create. Keeping to the speed limit can also help the environment. The more you speed the more petrole you are going to use, making the pollution higher. Also SUVs make about six times their own weight in CO2 each year. A small efficient diesel car covering the same distance not only uses much less fuel, it makes two thirrds less. If possible use sollar energy, after all it is free, all you need to buy equipment. You can get much of your water and heating from the sun and even generate electricity. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Only buy what you need, dont stock Reuse whatever you can, like containers and paper , and recycle what you cannot reuse.It really as simple as that. Ladies and Gentlemen, Finally turning off unused sources of power such as television and heaters will help the environment, as well as save your money. If everibody stuck to these rules, we would be doing a great thing by protecting the earth. So please take into consideration what I have said and try to do your part. After all. It will our next generation that will feel the effects. Ladies and Gentlemen, I think thats all my speech. Hopefully it will be useful for all of us.Thank you very much for your attention. Remember global warming is a problem that we need not to discuss, however, is that we need to solve the problem !!!!!!!!!!!!
