LUNG CANCER CHEMOTHERAPHY Chemotherapy refers to drugs that are used to treat cancer. These drugs are taken orally or intravenously and circulate throughout the bloodstream. Chemotherapy drugs kill cancer cells as they travel through the bloodstream and into all the organs of the body. But, because they reach all part of your body, they also affect normal cells. Since cancer cells usually divide faster than normal cells, they are more likely to be damaged and destroyed by these drugs. Thus the drugs may kill the cancer cells or at least control the growth and spread of the tumor. Chemotherapy treatment programs are tailored to the needs of each person. The doctor develops a chemotherapy treatment plan (protocol) by considering things such as the type of lung cancer, how widespread it is, and the individuals general state of health. Chemotherapy can be used to: (1) attempt a cure (2) slow the cancers growth (3) keep the cancer from spreading (4) relieve symptoms that may be caused by the cancer by shrinking the tumor. Even if chemotherapy does not cure the disease, studies have consistently shown that it can help lung cancer patient live longer and more comfortably. Types of

chemotherapy drugs: for two years, the two most commonly used drugs for treatment of lung cancer have been Carboplatinum and Cisplatin, two platinum based drugs. Some people respond better to some drugs than others,. In the attempt to achieve the best result with the fewest side effects or an individual, a physician may try different chemotherapy drugs, either alone or in varying combination.
