Introduction What is SG4:00

Essential issues for complying with SG4:00 To provide a safe system of work during all stages of erecting and dismantling scaffolds. Fall Arrest equipment is essential Use of and inspection of fall arrest equipment requires adequate training. Guardrails Single guardrails on all non-working lifts Double guardrails & toe-boards on all working lifts

The method of working must limit distance scaffolder needs to walk out to an exposed edge to the maximum length of material being used; tunnel method. Minimum platform requirements 3No properly supported boards Single Guardrail to clip on. If no edge protection available, you must clip on at first point you are at >/= 4m above ground. Ladders Always put in place as soon as possible Always remove as late as possible

Never climb the scaffold structure! Pre-start Risk Assessment Tool-box talks. (signed by all to confirm that issues are understood).

Tube & Fitting Scaffolds Erecting Tube &Fitting Scaffolds Base out materials

Erect 1st non working lift with transoms spaced at 1.5m or 1.2m as appropriate.

The lift should always be boarded out from below

3No properly supported boards with a maximum gap of 1No board wide to either side to provide access to the Ledgers. NB! Add more boards if the gap that remains is greater than 1 board wide.

Ladders should be either internal or within an external ladder access tower. Access to the first lift should be via a temporary ladder. Another person should hold the ladder steady. Progressively install single guardrails working away from the ladder access point (a basic requirement of SG4:00 for all non-working lifts). NB! These single guardrails will remain in place for the life of the scaffold to protect scaffolders during dismantling and alteration.

Clip on when raising or lowering working platform to prevent falls into the gap left when boards are removed.

Introduce a permanent ladder as soon as possible and remove as late as possible. Place a Scafftag (or scaffold incomplete sign) on ladder to warn people that the scaffold is under construction. Tie scaffold to the building or in accordance with requirements of the design. As soon as access is gained to the 2nd lift where there no means of edge protection, clip on to a Ledger to safeguard against falls.

As this is the landing platform for the next ladder, fix double guardrails at this point before stepping onto main body of scaffold.

Access onto unprotected area can now be along 3No properly supported boards. Max distance to walk out on a T & F scaffold will be equal to the longest item being fixed, namely 6.4m (21 feet). Working away from ladder, systematically fix single guardrails to all non-working lifts (incl stop-end rails and intermediate guardrails where falls could occur. Once edge protection is completed, Ledgers and Transoms for next lift can be fitted without the need to attach a harness. When passing material up through the scaffold for upper lifts, work off a fully boarded platform with double guardrails, or be clipped on. If single guardrails are being used, there is no need to clip on whilst erecting the next lift. However, before raising the work platform you must clip on to a Ledger or Transom above head level. Raise all boards and work systematically back towards the safety of the ladder access platform. If the ladder is in the middle portion of the scaffold, repeat this process the other side of the ladder. Ensure double guardrails and toe-boards are fitted at ladder position before securing the next ladder. Fully board out, or board out leaving a maximum gap of 1-board width either side to provide easy access to ledgers for clipping on when erecting the next lift. Repeat process of fixing double guardrails at ladder position before stepping out onto main body of scaffold. NB! The procedure for working lifts is exactly same as for non-working lifts, except that double guardrails must be installed. Remember When fixing guardrails, move gradually away from ladder. When raising/lowering boards, move gradually back towards ladder.

After the guardrails are complete, complete the boards and attach toe-boards. NB! This process minimizes the use of the harness to only those activities where there is a risk of a fall.

Single guardrails are already in place to protect scaffolders during dismantling.

Dismantling Tube & Fitting Scaffolds Dismantling procedure is carried out progressively from one end and is a reversal of the erection stages. Dismantling should always be safe and from a fully-boarded platform with double guardrails or you must clip on. Climb down the ladder. Working away from the ladder, pull down boards and form a safe platform of minimum 3-board width. NB! The single guardrails are already in place.

Birdcage Scaffolds For all non-working lifts, only the Outside perimeter and every other bay is boarded out and enclosed by single guardrails. This allows work to continue within protected areas whilst erecting the next part of the scaffold. --- II --Erecting CUPLOK Birdcage Scaffolds Base-out the scaffold materials on the ground.

Transoms have to be installed on boarded bays of non-working lifts, but will not be required for un-boarded bays.

Ideally ladder access will be fairly central in the birdcage. Board out from below and for non-working lifts, leave a 1-board wide gap either side to allow access to the Ledgers for clipping on.

Avoid laps between scaffold boards which are obvious trip hazards. Lapped boards are acceptable on returns of T&F scaffolds. Boards should overlap the Transoms Max 150mm Min 50mm

Secure the ladder before moving onto the next lift.

Secure a Scafftag or scaffold incomplete sign to warn others the scaffold is under construction. At this stage there is no need to clip on as there are no 4m anchor points available. Systematically fix single guardrails, working away from the ladder position. Once all single guardrails are in place, progressively fix standards, Ledgers and Transoms. Remember to fix transoms for support to boarded bays.

Before raising the working platform, clip on above head height to offer protection against falls into gaps left after removing boards from the lower level. On the new working lift, all boards will be laid on the same plain. The gaps that exist at Intermediate Ledger locations will need protecting (see later). The ladder platform at the 2nd level must be fitted with double guardrails and toeboards before moving out onto the working lift.

Systematically erect double guardrails working away from the ladder position.

Toe-boards should be fitted to close off the gaps at Intermediate Transoms (the toeboards will be sloping and resting against the standards. All other gaps will need to be covered with plywood by the Customer before the scaffold is put into use.

Dismantling Birdcage Scaffolds Dismantling should be systematic and a reversal of erection. Remove toe-boards and single boards to provide access to the Ledgers for clipping on. Remove guardrails. Climb down ladder. Pull down boards and create a new platform
