Letters Tell of '"Threats" to Women

POLICE SEEK THE MYSTERY WRITER
Mysterious letters containing warnings of alleged murderous attacks are causing alarm In the village of Waterlooville, a few miles from Portsmouth. The letters are believed to have been written by one person, whom the police are trying to trace. One of the lettersaddressed to a >voman living in London-roadread: " Dear Madam,I am going to inform you about a murderous attack that is going to be made on your house to-night. Don't sleep alone. ,You may regret it. Be wise and take my advice.Prom One Who Knows." Another letter, delivered at a house in Queen's-road, r a n : " I ought to warn you of , of the underworld. He is dangerous, and he is planning to make an attack on your house during this week. Be warned by me and guard your house. From a Helper." A third letter, delivered in Jubilee-road, read: *' As one of your fellow-countrymen I feel it is my duty to warn you of danger that may be happening to your house to-night. I don't like to ' let o n ' about my pal. but I feel it is my duty to warn you, so that you can take proper precautions. From a Friend." "Two of the recipients were much alarmed by the letters, though the third was inclined to think that it was the work of someone mentally unbalanced.

PIPER OF LOOS
V.C. in March to Cenotaph on Battle Anniversary
Wearing Highland costume and playing the pipes with which he rallied the troops and won the V.C. at Loos, Piper D. Laidlaw, V.C, headed a march yesterday to the Cenotaph of a small band of survivors of the battle and sons of those who fought. It was seventeen years ago almost to a^day that Piper Laidlaw won his decoration while marching in front of his trench, playing his pipeSr despite enemy Are. A party numbering about twenty assembled in the Horse Guards Avenue and marched to the Cenotaph, where two wreaths were laid. Five hundred members and old comrades of the City of London Rifles (6th Battalion London Regiment), with Colonel M. J. Macdonald, M.C., at their head, attended yesterday the regiment's annual memorial service at St. Bride's Church, Fleet-street, E.C. Wives, widows, children and old soldiers themselves packed the church. The battalion's band, conducted by a tall drum major, led the singing of the hymns. After the service the regiment and members of the Old Comrades' Association marched to the Royal Exchange, where they placed a wreath on the Territorial Memorial.
