Maria Reyes 3rd grade Writing lesson

Description of Classroom:
This is a third grade classroom 65% of the students are ELL

Background:
Students are learning how to read a newspaper and what are some of the main concepts that make a newspaper article.

Content Objective(s):
Students will learn about the WHO, WHAT, WHERE,WHEN,WHY and HOW of a newspaper article.

Language Objective(s):
By identifying the WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN WHY and HOW of an event they will write their own newspaper article.

Nevada Standards:
3. W.2 Write informative texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. 3. SL.4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.

Teaching Strategies:
I will introduce to the students the 5W and H chart to the students. I will tell explain to them what the WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN WHY and HOW are of a story Why it is important to identify them to fully understand any story or newspaper article

Warm Up Activity:
Read a simple newspaper article as a class and identify the WHO WHAT WHER WHEN WHY HOW

Lesson Sequence:
I will do the warm up activity We will identify the words WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN WHY and HOW Come up with own definitions in small groups Students then become reporters They will be paired up with a classmate and will interview each other on something they have experienced and would like they would like to share with a class Students will fill out there WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN WHY and HOW graphic organizer as they are interviewing their classmates Students will use graphic organizer to create their own newspaper article

Supplementary Materials:
Various newspaper articles 5W and H graphic organizer

Accommodations:
Students will get the opportunity to work as a whole class and also with small groups before working individually. Teacher will also be walking around helping students when they have questions

Review/Assessment:
the graphic organizer chart they fill out during their interview and their newspaper article will be their assessment

Reflection:
I have never done this lesson in an actual classroom but I think it is engaging and student will be able to write their own newspaper articles and think of themselves as journalist could be very exciting to some of them.
