Name of Lesson: Our KAUST Community Summative Assessment

Grade Level: 4 Subject: Unit of Inquiry, PYP Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Organize Ourselves Prepared by: Scott Chapman Overview and Purpose: Working in small groups, students design a Mission Statement for a community of their choice. The students then plan and create a fully functioning community based on their Mission Statement. Educational Standards (Based on the Primary Years Program: Making It Happen) Social organization and culture: The study of people, communities, cultures and societies; the ways in which individuals, groups and societies interact with each other. Related concepts: citizenship, communication, rights, roles. Objectives:

Identify roles, rights and responsibilities in society Formulate and ask questions about places and society Learners are aware that language is a vehicle for becoming knowledgeable; for negotiating understanding; and for negotiating the social dimension.

Provide students with instructions on how to create a Mission Statement. Provide students with the rubric for the assignment. Provide students with the link Students will need a lesson on the basics of building using MinecraftEdu.

Verification: 1. Students created a Mission Statement. 2. Students are working to plan a community to support the Mission Statement. 3. Students are working together to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner. 4. Students are using MinecraftEdu appropriately. Activity: As a whole class, students examine a variety of Mission Statements from familiar companies.

How does the language influence the direction of the company? Students work to create a meaningful Mission Statement for the classroom. One to enhance their learning experience and to be used for the remainder of the school year to guide their learning. Students are grouped based on interest. What type of community are they interested in creating? Students work together to create a working and meaningful Mission Statement for their community. Students use their Mission Statement to create the community. - What buildings are needed to fulfill the Mission Statement? - Where will the community be located? What type of environment? - What services will be needed to support the quality of life of the people in the community? - What infrastructure will be needed? Notes As this is a summative assessment task at the end of the Unit of Inquiry, the students will have experienced many learning opportunities and had formative assessments. The summative is designed with the understanding students are prepared to create their own communities because they have studied the organizational structure of communities.
