UOIT Optional Internship and Co-op Programs Benefits and Fees

Benefits to students participating in internship or co-op include potential to: Gain meaningful experience to complement the students academic studies Apply skills and knowledge learned in classes and labs Build important employability skills Earn income Gain valuable experience that can be included on a resume Develop important contacts within an employment sector Assess a company as a future employer Obtain up to 12 months of experience required for licensing by a professional association in Canada (e.g., Professional Engineers of Ontario) Apply the experience acquired during an internship or co-op term as the basis for the fourth-year thesis

Fees support the operation of running the co-op/internship program. Those costs include, but are not limited to: 1. Student Support One-to-one appointments and workshops provided to students to assist with job search strategies, resume/cover letter writing and interview skills Coordinating on-campus employer events including information sessions Processing student applications and arranging on-campus interviews Coordinating student information sessions on the benefits of participating in the internship and co-op program Coordinating the Internship/Co-op Success Workshop (students accepting offers of internship or co-op must attend this workshop prior to commencing their work terms) Guidance, support and intervention assistance to interns and co-op students as necessary Monitoring of students on work terms and communicating with employers and students as necessary Ensuring the staff stay abreast of recruiting trends and best practices in order to effectively advise students and enhance the program

2. Administration Connecting with employers, making them aware of academic programs and outlining the benefits of hiring co-op and internship students 1

Developing and maintaining an employer database Maintaining accurate online job postings through the Student Experience Centre portal Tracking student applicants through the application process Processing student application forms, student agreements, employer contracts, employer tax credit letters Confirming students selected for offers and communicating with all other applicants Verifying students eligibility, vetting internship and co-op opportunities Liaising with Registrars office to ensure timely enrolment of interns in appropriate course codes Liaising with Financial Aid and Awards to coordinate information on OSAP repayment and renewable scholarship concerns Receiving and forwarding end of term assignments to designated faculty Following up with faculty to ensure all requirements for successful academic notation are met Updating procedures, forms, portal content Monitoring of the program through statistical tracking and obtaining student and employer feedback

3. Faculty Support Verifying and approving new co-op/internship opportunities Evaluating Work Term Reports from students and submitting grades to Registrars office Making academic decisions that impact the operation of the program
