MEDIA RELEASE 12 March 2012

REGIONAL AUSTRALIA WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN The communications landscape for people living and working in regional and remote Australia has forever been changed with the introduction of new $0 upfront plans from Indigo Telecom that mean their dual mode (GSM & satellite all-in-one) mobile phones are more accessible than ever. Indigo Telecom is the only mobile carrier dedicated to providing 100% geographical mobile phone coverage to those living, working and travelling in the 72% of Australias landmass lacking standard mobile network coverage. Indigo Chief Executive Officer David Ruddiman said hes proud to be making mobile communications easily available to regional and remote Australians. Australias regional communities are the backbone of the country, but for too long theyve been completely under-serviced and to a large extent abandoned by the major telcos, Mr Ruddiman said. To a city slicker it may sound absurd that in a country as advanced as ours more than a million Australians dont have access to consistent mobile phone network coverage. In fact, only 28% of Australias land mass has GSM coverage and even then it can be extremely patchy. This new initiative however promises no more black spots with satellite coverage of 100% of Australias landmass and out to sea, so whether youre in the city or the bush, weve got you covered. Mr Ruddiman said people have wanted improved coverage for many years, but the cost of buying a satellite enabled mobile phone has traditionally been cost prohibitive for many Australians. While the Federal Government offers a satellite phone subsidy scheme covering up to 85% of the cost of a satellite phone for eligible applicants, the paper based application process means that for many needing access to this solution now, the sales cycle can take 30 40 days before they are able to get connected, which is simply outrageous, he said. At Indigo weve made a decision to change all that. Were going to subsidise the upfront cost of buying one of our satellite only or dual mode GSM & satellite all-in-one mobile phones, so customers will be able to walk into a store, choose a phone, sign onto one of our post-paid plans and start making calls from anywhere in Australia, same day. No more onerous paper work. No more red tape. Someones got to take a stand for the people in the bush. This is simply about Indigo making sure everyone in Australia has access to affordable and reliable mobile phone coverage, wherever they go Indigo has a range of premium, ultra-rugged satellite and dual mode GSM & satellite all-in-one mobile phones, engineered to the highest industry standards to meet the harsh environmental demands of the Australian outback. We have products that suit city and regional residents alike. Our dual mode GSM & satellite all-in-one mobile phone is similar to any other handheld device but is packed with additional features like GPS waypoint navigation, Mr Ruddiman said.

What makes this phone really unique is that when youre in a city or town with standard GSM coverage, the phone accesses that network, then when you travel outside standard coverage, the phone simply roams onto satellite to ensure youre always connected. This effectively eliminates the frustration of having little or no GSM network coverage across most of outback Australia. Our ongoing costs are also extremely competitive. GSM and satellite call rates are as low as 40 cents and 99 cents per minute respectively, making our plans as cost competitive as the major telcos post-paid cap plans. Mr Ruddiman said customers could sign up to Indigo plans at a variety of locations throughout the country, with many Australia Post retail outlets now stocking the companys product range. Always on connectivity is vital for the economic worth of farmers, truckies, miners and the umpteen small business operators across regional and remote Australia. It enables them to be more productive and importantly improves business owners OH&S and duty of care obligations to their staff, he said. An increasing numbers of casual users are also looking for better coverage. Campers, recreational anglers, grey nomads, hikers and boaties want to know that theyre still in contact when out in the bush or off the coast where black spots are common. Indigo provides ongoing customer support to regional and remote Australians through its Australian-based customer care centre.
