Abstract

Why it was done? Pulp is lignocelluloses fibrous material prepared by chemically or mechanically separating cellulose fibers from wood, fiber crops, or waste paper. Wood pulp is the most common raw material in papermaking. Today, some people and groups aduovocate using field crop fibers or agricultural residues instead of wood fiber as being more sustainable. 90% of pulp coming from plantation or reforested areas. Non-wood fibers sources account for about 5-10% of global pulp production, for a variety of reasons, including seasonal availability. Banana is the second most commonly grown fruit crop in Malaysia. Covering about 26000 hectar with a total production of 530000 metric tones. India is the major producers of banana by producing 11000000 metric tonnes every year, followed by Brazil, Equador, China, Philippines and Malaysia. In Malaysia are cultivated for local consumption by small holder and only about 12% of the total production is exported, mainly to Singapore,Brunei,Hong Kong and middle east. Since banana are grown in 122 countries all all over the world with a cultivated area of 3.8 million hectares ad a total production of 56.4 million metric tonnes, banana can be replaced for pulping manufacturing instead of wood which is the most common raw of paper making.

How it was done? Pulp is the most important thing in paper making process. Without pulp, paper cannot be produced. Commonly, there are two types of different processes which can be used to separate the wood fibers, which are mechanical pulping and chemical pulping, and every different process influenced the quality of pulp produced. In this project, we had chosen mechanical type as it is the best and easiest way to produce pulps from the banana trunk. Raw materials preparation ( banana trunk ) Mechanical pulping Chipping and washing Refiner defiberation Bleaching Washing Pulp to board mill

What are the conclusions? Pulp is the main ingredient for making paper. Pulp gains from materials that rich in cellulose fibers, for example wood fibers from trees. The higher the percentage of cellulose fibers contains in the raw materials, the lower the quantity of the raw materials been used. In easy word, that is why trees are the most common raw materials in papermaking industry. There are few examples of cellulose fibers materials besides tress that are cotton, Kenaf plant, wheat straw, paddy straw, and bagasse fibers ( sugar cane, gain from agricultural waste ).
