Academic Advising and Class Reistration

Selecting and registering for your college courses is all new territory for you. There is so much to explore in a new academic environment. Salem will provide you with a team of support that includes the dean of undergraduate studies, a faculty advisor and peer academic leaders. The advising process begins in early June, when you will receive an academic packet with information about classes, registration, summer reading and placement exams in foreign language and math (to be taken during orientation in August). Also included will be information about your options for your firstyear seminar course. Please return the form listing your preferences for your first-year seminar course, as well as the New Student Advisement questionnaire. These forms will be available by June on the Accepted Students page on the Salem website. Based on your responses, the dean of undergraduate studies will assign you to a first-year seminar course and a faculty advisor before you arrive on campus.

During orientation in August, you will have an individual advising session with your advisor and a group session with your Peer Academic Leader (an upperclass student). This team of support will help you select the rest of your fall courses and then register on days two and three of Orientation. You will have time on campus during Orientation to visit the bookstore and purchase the books that are needed for your fall courses. We suggest planning to spend approximately $400-$500 on textbooks per semester. Prices will vary based upon availability of used books or rental books. We know that you may have questions over the summer about academic life at Salem. SALEM SIGNATURE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (SSLP) As a Salem student, you will benefit from opportunities to participate in our Salem Signature Leadership Program (SSLP), a program that develops your unique potential as a leader and distinguishes your college experience. Made possible by a grant from BB&T, the SSLP includes workshops on conflict resolution, an emerging leaders class, and a trip to Washington, D.C.! The Class of 2016 will participate in a community-building retreat during orientation weekend that lays the foundation for this four-year comprehensive leadership development experience. WELLNESS PROGRAM We believe that healthy living supports your success! We offer health and fitness programs designed to help you manage stress and be well, both physically and emotionally. Most programs are free and include weekly classes, such as yoga and pilates. Consultations with a personal trainer are available in the Fitness Center. Students can explore local fitness trails and bike paths in the Village of Old Salem and along the six-mile Greenway behind campus that leads to Salem Lake. Bikes are available for students to check out and enjoy. Speakers on such topics as organic gardening, Chi Running, and stress reduction through sleep and rest are offered throughout the year. WOMEN IN NATURE (WIN) Salems new Women in Nature (WIN) program empowers students to explore the great outdoors while nurturing their inner well-being. Activities include camping and hiking trips in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina and kayaking trips on the coast.

SPIRITUAL LIFE You will find a rich and vibrant spiritual life at Salem. Rev. Dr. Amy Rio-Anderson, the College Chaplain, works with campus ministries representing numerous denominations and non-denominational groups. The student-led Interfaith Council, which is comprised of students from various faith traditions, sponsors discussions, worship services and special events that highlight the religious diversity of our campus.

Planning to make Salem your new home away from home is an exciting transition. Your first step is to complete a Housing Assignment Questionnaire, which can be found on the Accepted Students page of the Salem website. In June, you will receive your roommate and residence hall assignment, as well as detailed information about residence life. First-year residence halls are Babcock and Gramley, and most transfer students are housed in Clewell. Students accepted into the Honors program may apply to live in the Strong Honors House. Application information will be sent directly to Honors students in late May. There are many ways to personalize your room and make it your own. See the suggested packing list below. Your room will be furnished with twin beds (which require extra-long twin-sized bedding), two desks, two chairs and either a double chest of drawers or two dressers. All double-sized rooms have closets large enough to accommodate two students.

Residence Life

Your Residence Hall will have a lobby and a lounge. The lobby is off the main entrance and is used to entertain guests. The lounge, on the basement level of the building, has cable television, a DVD player and Wii. Lounges are typically used as gathering places for meetings and as a place to study. All residence halls have common kitchen spaces and each floor has a microwave for students use. Vending and ice machines are located in a central area in each building. Each residence hall has laundry facilities with machines that are card-activated and do not take cash. Laundry cards can be purchased in the basement of Babcock Hall.

YOUR COMMUNITY AT SALEM One of the great things about Salem College is that there is always someone for you to turn to with a question or just to talk. Living with you in the residence halls are students and staff members who are there to help you. Residential Coordinators (RCs) are Salem College staff members who are responsible for the general management and supervision of your residence hall. Your Residential Coordinator is there to assist you with academic, personal and social concerns. Resident Assistants (RAs) are trained student staff who live with you on your hall and assist you during the year. Your RA is there to make your adjustment to college easier and to serve as a source for general information about residence hall living and campus events. Your RA will work with you and your hall mates to plan programs and events throughout the year.

ATHLETICS As a member of the NCAA Division III and the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) we have seven varsity sports: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. FINANCIAL PLANNING INFORMATION Your enrollment costs for 2012-2013 include: Tuition $23,478, Student Government Fee $216 (paid in full in the fall), Technology Fee $145, and Room & Board (Resident Students only) $11,764. You will be billed by semester as outlined below. DINING SERVICES/MEAL PLAN Whether you need a between-meal snack, a full-course meal or a cup of coffee, its covered when you have a meal plan. Our dining locations offer a healthy variety and convenience every day for both residents and non-resident students. For Resident Students, Room & Board fees allow you to choose one of two options: Option-I) 19 meals per week in the Refectory + $50 Salem Bucks to use in the Cellar Grille & C-Store Option-II) 15 meals per week in the Refectory + $175 Salem Bucks to use in the Cellar Grille & C-Store Non-Resident Students may purchase plans for 15-50 meals per semester in the Refectory and additional Salem bucks for the Cellar Grille & C-Store. WORK STUDY If you receive work study as part of a financial aid package, please be aware that the amount of the work study is not applied toward your account balance (i.e. it is not subtracted from your bill). Work study is an opportunity to work part-time and you will be paid as you earn the money, just as in any job. You should be prepared to pay this difference, which is generally $800 each semester. If you work regularly, you can expect to earn money on a monthly basis. During the summer you will receive information about available positions on campus. Work study jobs are usually 7.5 hours a week earning minimum wage. FINANCIAL AID VERIFICATION If you receive notice that your financial aid award requires verification, you must complete the verification process for your award to become finalized and applied to your account balance. The verification process is mandated by law and requires submission of specific documents. It can be a multi-step, lengthy process. Please complete all steps as soon as possible so that your financial aid award can be reflected on your billing statement. PAYMENT PLAN The College offers a monthly installment plan, which will begin each June. While there are no finance charges, a $75 application fee is required. A brochure providing additional information about the installment plan will be mailed in early May to all confirmed students who have paid the $250 tuition deposit. PUBLIC SAFETY AND PARKING The campus is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year by experienced public safety officers who patrol campus and respond to calls for assistance. You may bring a car to campus as a first-year student. Register your vehicle online at salem.edu/public-safety/vehicle-registration or once you arrive on campus in August. The annual fee is $60. If you register online, your parking permit will be sent to the address you provide and the parking registration fee will be billed to your student account.

HEALTH SERVICES AND INSURANCE You will receive a health information packet in early May to be returned by July 2. Schedule a doctors appointment to have the physical and immunization forms completed. You must show proof of health insurance or purchase the College insurance plan. Visit salem.edu/admissions/accepted-students for forms, insurance information or to complete the online insurance waiver (available June 1). If you have not completed the online waiver by June 30, your fall billing statement will include a charge for the Salem insurance plan. TECHNOLOGY SERVICES Students have access to Salems high-speed campus-wide network. All residence halls have data connections for Internet and e-mail access, and three computer labs on campus are open 24 hours a day. When you confirm your plans to enroll, you will receive a Salem e-mail address and password. Check your Salem e-mail frequently for important updates.
