MILWAUKEE TheSoutheasternWisconsinWatershedsTrust(SWWT)alsoknown astheSweetWaterTrust receivedamajorboostinitscampaigntoimprovewater qualityintheMilwaukeeRiverBasinwithathreeyear$1.9grantfromtheJoyce Foundation.TheSweetWaterTrustisanumbrellaorganizationthatwasformedto improvetheregionswaterresourcesthroughcollaborativeefforts. ThegrantsupportssevenstateandlocalenvironmentalgroupsandtheSweetWaterTrust todevelopprojectsthatwillproducemeasurableimprovementsinwaterqualityand habitatstartingwiththeMenomoneeandKinnickinnicRiverWatersheds.Thisisa uniquecollaborativeeffortamongnonprofits,governments,universitiesandotherentities workingtousewatersnaturalboundaries,orwatersheds,inmakingimprovementsin waterqualityandhabitat. TheJoyceFoundationgrantwillhelpbuildthecollaborative efforttoestablishprojectpriorities,supportsoundscienceandanalyzecomplexpolicy issues,alltowardimprovingwaterqualityandhabitatandthehealthandeconomic strengthofcommunitiesintheGreaterMilwaukeeWatersheds. Thisinvestmentprovidesenormousmomentumtowardmakingmeasurable improvementsinourwaterquality,statedPatMarcheseChairmanoftheSweetWater TrustExecutiveSteeringCouncil.ThegrantwillenabletheTrustanditsenvironmental partnerstoworkcollaborativelytobuildcommunitysupportforimplementingcost effectivewaterqualityimprovementprojectsintheGreaterMilwaukeeWatersheds. . .InadditiontotheTrust,theenvironmentalpartnersreceivingfundingare:1000Friends ofWisconsin, CleanWisconsin, MidwestEnvironmentalAdvocates, Milwaukee RiverKeeper, RiverAllianceofWisconsin, RiverRevitalizationFoundation,and SixteenthStreetCommunityHealthCenter.Eachgroupbringsaparticularfunctionand expertisetothiswaterqualityimprovementeffortincludingthefollowingactivities: Engagebusinesses,municipalitiesandthepeoplewholiveinthewatershedinthe watershedplanningprocessandensurethatinnovative,costeffectiveapproachesare takentoimprovewaterresources. Improvethequalityandquantityofdatacollectedbybothcitizensandagenciesto ensurethatwatershedrestorationplansaredevelopedandimplementedbasedon soundscience. (more)

Createanintegratedandlonglastingstructurethatsupportswatershedrestoration throughcollaborativeeffortsthroughouttheentireGreaterMilwaukeeWatersheds andnearshoreLakeMichigan. ThisgrantrepresentstheJoyceFoundationssecondsubstantialcommitmentto watershedrestoration.Thefirstwasa threeyear,$5millioneffortintheMaumeeRiver basininNortheastIndiana,NorthwestOhio,andSoutheastMichigan.Thiseffortfocused onurbanstormwaterpollution,agriculturalrunoff,wetlandprotectionandrestoration, andcontaminatedsedimentcleanup. SweetWaterTrustisacollaborativeefforttoachievehealthyandsustainablewater resourcesthroughouttheGreaterMilwaukeeWatersheds.Itisanongovernmental,non taxing,voluntaryorganization. MembersoftheTrustincluderepresentativesoflocal, countyandstategovernments,nongovernmentalorganizations,universityacademicsand businessandcommunityleaders. BasedinChicago,theJoyceFoundationsupportseffortstoprotecttheGreatLakes,to reducepovertyandviolenceintheregion,andtoensureitsresidentshavegood schools,decentjobs,astrongdemocracy,andadiverseandthrivingculture. ###
